  • absolute priviledge to see them on their 40th anniversary tour in Glasgow with my Dad

  • if you listen to the overlaid harmonies closely, they really are quite intricate and a stunning technical achievement

  • Great find, thanks :)))))

  • How the hell could anyone not like this???????????? It was a song in a million.

  • @malectric

There were hundreds of songs like this in the early 70's, and they still exist today.

This is one of the better ones.

Then came :Punk, New Wave and Rap and all, but a good song is still a good song, they just don't make them like they used to, sadly.

  • @TedRob1958 Jacqui is still touring with Jacqui McShee's Pentangle. It's a very different sound to the original Pentangle, being sax & keyboard led, but is still true to the folk-jazz fusion and the stunningly good musicianship -- I saw them live the week Bert died, and it was an incredibly moving experience.

  • I forget what a great song this is.

  • Lovely! Thank you!

  • The late great Bert Jansch.

  • I first became interested in girls, about 12, and because of Take Three Girls which I watched on TV, with a bit of guilt because boys don't like girls, and this song has always took me back to that time, Things have moved on and the girl thing also, I listen to this song because of the talent of Pentangle and Jacqui's voice which is just perfect, Pure talent. I have listened to her sing more recently on you tube posts and though older has not lost that voice. Talent.

  • If you don't like this you don't have a working set of ears.

  • There was a time when musicianship was important, and popular music reflected the very best that was on offer and didn't pander to the few. Who could fail to find something in this

  • Agree with TheHumbuckerboy, Jacqui always had that great pitch ( a bell like quality). Different from Sandy Denny and Maddy Prior, all great singers who excelled with different styles.

RIP Bert, I saw you many times (including at Victor Harbour in SA many years ago and have always been in awe of your talent.

  • I echo the same thoughts Bert was such a talent and will be greatly missed RIP

  • Excuse my ignorance but what's Jacqui McShee up to these days?

  • what a line-up John Renborn, Bert Jansch, Jacqui McShee, Danny THompson, Terry Cox perfect. RIP Bert Jansch

  • @quaich14 Yes, they were/are all great individual musicians, but what really strikes me is their watertight ensemble playing. RIP and thanks for the beautiful music, Bert.

  • RIP Mr. Jansch. You were a great player, an outstanding influence of so many

guitarists. We thank for your contribution to the music world.

  • I'll sware they did Golden Brown. I remember it well from the 1960's.

  • Why oh why only one album from Bert and John

  • great song and what a fantastic voice she has.

  • RIP Bert.

  • Bert, thanks for so many decades of fine music. R.I.P. while your music continues to play on.

  • Just heard the sad news - BBC Scotland TV did not mention his passing - maybe I miised it - Anyways - a matter of time until they give Bert the respect an artist of his

    stature deserves.

Terrible year wit the loss of Gerry Rafferty in the spring and now Bert.

Love "Light Flight" - stunning, classic song.

    Thanks for everything Bert!

  • RIP Bert. You and Renbourn changed my ideas about guitar.

  • Always the good taken so young. RIP Bert.

  • thank you bert x

  • God bless you, Bert, and the others.

  • Bert Jansch's place in music history is secure. The man will be sorely missed but the music will always be with us.

  • RIP Bert Jansch. Farewell to the Master..

  • Lovely.....

  • RIP BERT JANSCH.

  • Even though I've heard this many times, it's only just occurred to me that it sounds like Radiohead's entire "In Rainbows" album.

  • RIP Bert, you've been my inspiration for several years and I will continue to love and enjoy your music for many more to come.

  • Lots of good memory’s from the early 70's of Pentangle & Bert Jansch on the Uni & college circuit, many thanks Bert for the music, RIP

  • Bert will be sadly missed. The inspiration for Jimmy Page's version of Black Waterside on Zep 1. Saw him play in a folk club in Leicester in 1968, I was a cheeky young sod of 16 and asked him how to play Anji ....... he said "you learn the tune and then practice for 20 years, I'm nearly there now"

Lovely bloke and a genius guitarist / songwriter.

  • @david2136 Ignore my maths! 5+7 don't equal 13!!!

  • @david2136 Even clapping in 5/4 would be a problem! It's 13/8 0r (5+7)/8 time. Middle 8 is in 6. Great song and happy memories, though. RIP Bert.

  • RIP Bert Jansch..

  • RIP Bert .

  • RIP Bert Jansch. What an original song this was! Interesting to see a double bass instead of an electric one.

  • @pauline5248 the double bass player is Danny Thompson. If you like his work, check out his playing with John Martyn - particularly the album Solid Air. Double bass is not just for Rockabilly!

  • Rest in Power.

  • RIP Bert Jansch.

  • Artemissss. I so agree, truly incredible vocal. Great times

  • I love this song. I keep replaying it. I just can't get enough, it's crazy.

  • You are probably thinking of Take Five by Dave Brubeck, 5/4 time jazz beat

  • I know people say that it sounds like Golden Brown but i'm sure it reminds me of something else as well but i can't put my finger on it :| especially 0.25-0.32

  • @missmccherry I think it might be a little like Jethro Tull's Aqualung

  • this is music.....indie puppies should learn to play like this!!!

  • I love this song! i first heared it when i was 8

  • its obviously more than just the time signature ffs. saying otherwise i really stoopid - think of all the different sounding 4/4 songs. there the key, the progression, the tempo, the melody - so muh more than simply the time signature.

  • cracking :)

  • excellent... I returned to my hippie days like a strike of ligghtning

  • yeah, this is like Golden Brown, in that ... um, it has a rhythm, and notes, and stuff ...sheesh, what a long bow to draw!

  • Ok it doesn't sound anything like take 5. Not even the beat it's in 6/4 whereas take5 is in 5/4.

These guys were way ahead of their time and their music is timeless.

  • @prashantjohn its the note choice that makes it sound like Take 5 as well as Golden brown , also it changes time signature i guess it is all down to personal preference but most people think it sounds like Take 5 as you can see by the comments

  • Reminds me a bit of that Jazz song Take 5 aswell as Golden Brown

  • Is this concert on DVD and/or VHS?

  • has brubeck feel because of compound signature and the style of drumming. oh and that guitar bit that ive just got to is VERY take 5. fair comment.

  • has brubeck feel because of compound signature and the style of drumming.

  • Great song

  • One of my favourite songs of all time

  • I forgot about this band and came across it a year ago on youtube. But I remember this song from my childhood. Maybe 6-7 years of age? Maybe it was 71? though this song probably came out before that or even later 70s and I was a bit older. I was 5 by 1970 but I cant tell if the info on this video says 70 or 70s with a ' in front

  • This is a minor masterpiece.

  • She's sitting down...I hope you aren't thinking the chair legs are her legs!

  • This is a unique and brilliant song and performance.Jacqui McShee demonstates a beautiful , crystal clear tone ,perfect pitch and great technique;she has been denied much of her due respect and recognition in my opinion.

  • love love love it.

  • a very young-looking Danny Thompson, king of the double bass. You can see him regularly on BBC4 theTransatlantic Sessions.

  • re: similarity to ' golden brown' ...it's the unusual time signature - 5/4 time....see 'take five' by brubeck

  • Does anyone know anything about that pickup bert is using?

  • @cretsina, Not sure, but looks like a Shure 2287. I don't know if they are still in Production these Days..

  • Embarrassed to say I am just finding these youtube videos now, May 2011. But I guess it's never too late.

I have been a Pentangle/Jacqui fan for 4 decades now. Pentangle and Steeleye and all of their components like Jacqui, Maddy, Bert, Tim, John R. carried me through the 70's and 80's and kept me sane....mostly.

Jacqui's angelic voice is just so sweet, pure, and bright. We heard her back in the days of vinyl, before internet, so these images of her are especially fascinating.

    Thanks!

  • beautiful

  • @JuanBNO Yes, I can see your point re "Golden Brown"!

  • The people who didn't like this clearly don't like brilliant songs or watching amazing musicians play them. Well, if that's the case fuck off and watch the plethora of crap that you will find on youtube that's more to your taste.

  • The last time I saw drumming and bass as good as this was Roni Size and Reprazent. Love all of Mr Yansh's stuff.

  • Bloody hell

  • sounds like it's about LSD or something?

  • Check out Ruby Colley for some great contemporary folk/classical music

  • One of my favourite albums, this - Basket Of Light! :-)

  • wonderful tune, among my top ten, working vinyl 45s ♥

  • do pentangle fans usually enjoy 'Gentle Giant'?

  • FANTASTIC TRACK FROM A SUPERB VOCALIST

  • Jackie Mc Shea - where is she now? What a voice!

  • @FLORABUNDA42 her husband is famous session drummer Gerry Conway - famous on a lot of Cat Stevens albums and some of Jethro Tull albums in the 80s

  • music of the gods indeed

  • She looks like she's got four very skinny legs.

  • @saxby01 What have her legs got to do with her beautiful voice.

  • @tracy070991 I think that was just a whimsical observation of a first glance impression. The chair legs were unfortunate!! Wonderful voice and music... With Double bassist Danny Thompson (Nick Drake and John Martyn)

  • @saxby01 , We were all Skinny in 1970... Listen to Her Voice, Don't worry 'bout Her Legs..

  • @davidh2136

    what´s wrong with her legs?

  • @MrsFeelorange not a thing..

  • @davidh2136 Terry Cox!

  • @Coltrane48 Hello Terry Cox!!

  • @davidh2136 That's because both songs are in 5/4 time (try clapping to it!)

  • @barpypardlo and davidh2136 It is a tool used by many Composers to give the impression of motion or in Mussourgskys Pictures at am Exhibition Promenade movement of really walking.

  • @saxby01 LOL

  • The Stranglers "Golden Brown" kinda sounds like they ripped from this song.

  • @JuanBNO But which came first

  • @JuanBNO they sound similar because they are in 5/4 time which is rare...listen to Dave Brubeck's "take five" as another example

  • @JuanBNO

Sounds more like Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" to me...

  • @JuanBNO Yes we (my friends and me) always thought the same. Still good tho'

  • @JuanBNO Actually I think this track sounds much more similar to Take 5 than Golden Brown. It is after all in 5/4 time for large parts of it and not 3/4 like Golden Brown.

  • @JuanBNO

You could also argue that Pentangle listened to The Beatles "I Feel Fine" while coming up with that opening Guitar phrase.

  • @JuanBNO

Except that "Light Flight" alternates between 6/4 and 5/4 time, making it a whole different animal. "Golden Brown" is a fast 3/4 with an occasional kick to keep it interesting. The tonal movement that you're hearing is common to all kinds of tunes. It's not enough to go by. You can even hear it in the Beatles "Hard Day's Night" if you listen for it.

  • this song is great. i love the melody she sings...sounds so complex and she handles it with such ease...

  • A blissful intertwining of musical genius ! Beyond perfection!

  • just try to sing that melody line, even in your own best key, and stay in tune - maybe an opera singer could do it, but nobody else - Jacqui McShee is unparalleled -

  • great song...the soundtrack of my youth, drugs will always taste like the mc.gee gal

  • Great clip, fantastic drummer.

  • @frogface66 You noticed ! He was special ! in every song.

  • @vintagezigg Thanks so much for sharing... this has all the rustic feel that one would expect, but there are really forward looking elements towards the progressive genre too. Its very good.

  • Love this song, her voice is amazing!

  • These guys were, and still are, fantastic performers. I mean, the vocal counterpoint between McShee and Cox is simply magical in its beauty, and the connection between Renbourne and Jansch is amazing. Having matured in the 2000's, it makes my heart ache and my soul weep for the fact that no more performers like these guys are going to appear anytime soon.

Peace out, you glorious hippy super-men (and women).

  • @MrFolktacular Agree wholeheartedly with you on this one,I was 21 when this came out, along with other amazing performers likeRoy Harper, Mike chapman, Curved air and many more. Something that really takes me back to the atmosphere and the feel and hope of that era, are performers like the Sunday,s, Fleet Foxes, air and many more that are on the fringe of popular music and you don't hear on radio, but don't lose heart there,s still a lot of meaningful music out there, ''seek and you will find''.

  • @persephone608 I don't know, there is a growing list of things that make me think that I won't ever find stuff like this again: Guitar Hero, Eminem, Rhianna, Justin Beiber, Dizzee Rascal...

  • @MrFolktacular Hah, are u kiddin?...we had to put up with bay city rollers, disco, near- beer...at the same time pentangle was together...todays kids got it good!

  • Another reason to hate american radio..wtf, why did they hide so much...

  • that snare!

  • The ultmate folk jazz group. I love this stuff.

  • can anyone else hear The Stranglers 'Golden Brown' in here...?

  • @carpet691 it's the time signature (in parts)

  • @carpet691 Yea, same sort of timing ''methinks''.

  • @carpet691 LOL , NOW i can

  • another voice could not possibly handle this melody line, rising and falling so rapidly - but Jaqui is never pitchy, she hits every note cleanly, and then that shimmering soprano sustained lyrical passage, so sweet - she makes it all so special, so purely beautiful -

to all young musical acts: do as well!

  • She's so beautiful...

  • Wow 1970 again. I know it's 40 years ago, I was 12 then and watch this show and Take 3 Girls when it came out 1969-71. Colditz currently on Yesterday, was also produced around this time and broadcast 1972-74. Classic gold from the Nations Greatest Decade 1970's.

  • Wow!

  • i love her voice!

  • yeah fabulous performance & difficult timing is spot on

  • So you lot don' t remember the UK TV prog 'Take three girls' This was the theme.

    No thought not !

  • @atfatw She's a singer, not a model.

  • @scriltist

she is kind of pretty, nice hair, good 'do, exposed legs, except for that face. girl singer's photos make good eye candy and help sell albums!

  • @atfatw

    How sexist can you get?

  • @bigboxbobby2

women are beautifull, lovely, pretty, I do not consider it a bad thing that they are so wonderfully made. do you?

  • @atfatw

agree... all women are beautiful to someone... we males have our prefences but they are not as shallow as the media seem to think....

we can fall in love with a voice as easily as, well, anything else....

  • I WAS INTRODUCED TO PENTANGLE ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO BY MY LATE UNCLE, WHAT A GREAT GROUP, NICE POSTING, TEN OUT OF TEN FOR THIS ONE

  • i have original lp the pentangle. thesound is fantastic.

  • Once each year I have to replay this piece, and realize again how fortunate I was to be young when it came out and surprised the whole world.

Thank you, fawnface, for uploading this treasure.

  • What a gem from the past! Always loved this song but I never saw this performance. One of the finest groups ever, in any category.

  • Danny Thompson in fantastic form. The pictures come from the time when the BBC had just acquired colour technology so they experimented as much as possible. The old B&W days made it important to blend images or it was all a bit boring.

  • I remember when music was about the music. It seems like it was so long ago.

  • Great 60's music, from a classic tv show, mostly lost due to tape wiping. Pentagle still performing so music from this great tv show, can still be heard today.

  • this song, while in a sugarcube, while out in a forest : D

  • They don't make music like this anymore =/

  • I've had the dubious honour of shaking John Renbourne's hand, and holding Bert Jansch's guitar while he fell off the stage drunk.

  • @harrynicholas bahaha, that made me laugh =]

  • This is a beautifull song mellow and soothing i love it , the theme tune for "take 3 girls" a good glass of red and this makes harmony.thanks.goodness returns threefold.

  • classic....

  • I saw them when they first held rehearsal-type gigs at the Horseshoe Hotel in Tottenham Court Road on Sunday evenings (I think) around 1967/68. Love to be able to take you all back there - wonderful...Yes, the BBC work is just great, especially Cox's contributions. xx

  • Doesn't this remind you of "Take 3 girls" good prog. :)

  • God, the days when I had hair...

  • fantastic

  • People wrongfully pass this off as hippy folk but these are some of the best players ever making forward thinking music that was deeply rooted in English folk, unlike everyone else who was looking to America these guys made new British music!

  • Was not into this stuff back then but now looking back they were very innovative maybe suffered being rooted in folk, what would you label this now?...New Age folk? maybe good musicians all the same, this was a theme to a Tv show but my memory is shot these days.

  • @WELLBRAN. Yep. It was called "Take Three Girls", a drama series on BBC TV around 1969, about the lives of three girls sharing a London flat at the height of the "Swinging '60's. See this YouTube video for the intro watch?v=JtYpJ8aqa2Y

  • I adore this song

  • this must be one of the most underrated bands of all time timeless stuff

  • it gave me a flashback

  • I didn't realise Joanna Lumley could sing! Well done by her.

  • just discover this band...love it!!!!!!

  • Folk Baroque at it's finest height!

  • Thank so much for posting this fawnface, takes me back to 17 something, very very cool

  • i love hippy chicks.i want one

  • great!

  • What a great folk rock number by a band who should have been much bigger. Bert Jansch is a legend, Johnny Marr invited him on tour.

  • Wow, I had forgotten about this, it just popped into my head and I'm so happy to hear it again. I had the original vinyl record, which was one of my favorites back in the day. Wonderful stuff.

  • magical space

  • Great, even better than the record! This is the perfect song to have on your car stereo whilst blasting down the highway.

  • great band!!

    and she is cute!!
