Some people hear all the talk of women getting the birth that they want and falsely assume natural birthers and home birthers are selfish. If we take a closer look at most hospital practices and protocols you realize there are so many damaging practices done to women in labor that the only way to get away from them is to do something drastic and demand a more gentle birth experience. We really need to tie in the connection of the baby's well being to a mother's emotional well being.
hello and thank you for posting your video. i found this by googling "history of childbirth in america".
i am the mother of two and pregnant with my third.
my first was born (amazingly enough) without pain management or c-section in a hospital in 1995. i did receive an episiotomy, which was a very painful recovery.
my third baby, due in late june, will (without hesitation) be born again with an attending midwife.
i think women need the information about childbirth and what their options are.
we, today, are presented only one "appropriate and acceptable option" of birth with a physician. Birth is treated as any other "illness" when in fact it is more of a journey.... and at a risk of sounding to "hippy-dippy" something that is meant to happen naturally and perfectly for almost all women.
there is nothing more empowering then being a mother who travels through her birth, with her birth, and gives birth. this is opposed to having birth "happen" to you.
I really like this video. I'm only 18 but I'm very interested in all aspects of pregnancy and birth, including the history of them. It's such a shame what women have gone through in the name of "medical progress." I personally see natural birth, either at home or a birthing center, as the best option for women who have had normal, healthy pregnancies. Although it won't happen for many years, I can't wait to give birth as naturally as possible one day.
The Dutch model is an example for us all to aspire to, midwives in Netherlands didn't allow doctors to take over childbirth, they have a culture of "normality", lots of home deliveries etc.
We gave birth for thousands of years and then men (doctors) came along and told us how to do it properly!! In the UK we regulated midwifery in the 1920's and became recognised as a profession, but at a price, doctors were still in charge. Childbirth in the UK is much less medicalised than in the US with midwives providing the care and assisting the mother to deliver her baby (without a doctor). We are reclaiming childbirth as a normal life event, but still have far to go.
I really enjoyed watching your video. My husband and I are currently trying to get pregnant. I totally agree with you about allowing women to have more control over their own births. I'm very lucky that I have a wonderful family doctor who LISTENS to me and has 3 children of her own. I wouldn't feel as good going into a pregnancy without having such faith in my doctor. Thanks for your contribution.
p.s. all of your videos are hilarious and adorable too, btw. I couldn't pick just one to comment on, so thats why i commented on your page as a whole.
lol youre so cute ... yeah it was really great ... i watched that one you favorited too - really awesome - thats how i would like to do it. also -- i am going to start doing some how-to makeup and beauty crap - i just couldnt resist it anymore - so if you have any requests let me know. hope you are doing well!
My husband is a doctor. I have always reminded him to be respectful of women and their bodies. I think I have him convinced that doctors--especially those who have never experienced childbirth themselves--are not the most important people in the room during delivery.

I'm sure there's more than one. But if you're talking about the kid who looks about 9 years old, a paternity test proved he wasn't the dad after all.
