Now Sigma is king. A camera that can outperform (in image quality) the fast-shooting Nikon D3x, but it is lighter and cheaper! Can't beat it! Don't compare it to cameras that do video. Professional level cameras don't do video yet (not the top-of-the-line Canon OR Nikon OR Leica OR Hasselblad). One day Sigma will make a full-frame camera that slaughters the best from Nikon, Canon, and Sony. This APS-C camera just spanks them.
i am sory for my typing. error in my android phone. No, i'll never pay for 9k, even for $4k. but i will consider in a range 3-4k. Yes it is a great camera! Best in its class!
Not sure why video doesn't lend well to the Sigma sensor, but I'm sure they left it off for that reason, as it would certainly compete better in the market against other cameras that do offer video. That being said, the Sigma tends to be a photographer's camera...or maybe more accurately, a photo-artist's camera. I love the purist approach to their cameras. I hope they price it accordingly, however.
Okay, so let's think about this. Sigma SD14 announced at Photokina 2006. Official release: 6 March 2007. Actual availability sometime later! Sigma SD15 announced at Photokina 2008. Relaunched: 20 February 2010. Actual availability sometime later!
Sigma announce prototype of 46MP SD1 at Photokina 2010. I'd like to see a production model before I collect my pension...
Look out Canon, and Nikon here comes the Sigma Foveon beast !!
Just think if the SD 1 can produce images as amazing as those with 15mp x3, just imagine what the future holds. I will definitely be getting one of these babies. Can't wait.
I will never understand why Sigma can't afford GOOD photographers. Bad Lightning all over.....get a REAL PRO to test your newbies to the limit....damn it !
@Nilz4FR - Bad lightning? I wasn't aware that some lightning was good. I guess you meant to type "lighting". Anyway, Sigma does have a crew of professional photographers, all of them very good. Check their website. Besides that, Sigma often also uses semi-professionals and amateurs who show what the cameras can do without all the expensive lighting and gear used in a pro shoot. But if you want to persist in criticizing samples, take a look at the pro samples at Nikon and Canon. Not so good
@phototristan Not at all. Each image stores at the same ratio as their 3-layer sensor, but in reverse. So, their 14 megapixel images from the SD14 stores at 3.4 megapixels. And the 46 megapixel SD1 images will store at approximately 15.3 megapixels each.
@rytterfalk Ahh, yes. I've stumbled upon one of those extremely rare opportunities to (slightly) correct Rytterfalk, who is one of my digital imaging heroes. While I did err when attempting to divide 15MP in my mathematically challenged brain, in actual operation, we are both incorrect (maybe). Unless I'm wrong (again) the SD14's X3F images store at a MAXIMUM of 4.6MP, with most storing at a smaller size, depending on the amount of information contained on the individual image. No? Yes?
@Chuckl881 hehe.. well, I'm sorry to say that you failed at correcting me, even if I would love to be corrected when wrong. :) You're likely mixing MP's with MB's. The number of pixels in a picture will not change unless you change to a lower resolution (which you wouldn't normally do if you "only" have 4.6MP) - but the size of the picture will change depending on what type of elements is inside, how easy it is to compress without scarifying vital information. Correct me if I'm wrong. :)
@rytterfalk Very true, of course. But what is actually stored on the card, and the hard drive, is MB, and not MP, yes? So is the original question about the size of storage needed for images where the flaw exists?
@Chuckl881 Partly true. :) A 4.6MP RAW from a Foveon camera is much larger compared to the same 4.6MP RAW from a bayer camera. Even if we don't have any of those to compare with, we can do that using 10MP Nikons and Canons and we see that Sigma X3F's are bigger.
A SD14 4.6MP file equals somewhere around 14-18MB on your hard drive - A Nikon D80 NEF (RAW) file is about 8MB. You can say that Sigma files are very dense or thick and lucky for us hard drives are very cheap today!
@rytterfalk - well, I'll gladly run with "partly true", and be happy to have escaped this thread with a tiny fragment of dignity. And thanks for the valuable info! I truly had no idea. And I owe an apology to "phototristan". I had it all wrong.
@Chuckl881@phototristan :) By using places like this smaller mistakes is easily fixed - and i don't think space will be the first "problem" but CPU power to process those images. It's been fun talking!

@Jiucieu its a shame for you, but not the rest of us. We need seriuos camera for photography, not videography

@denisatjo It is if they expect you to pay 9 grand for a camera that only has a aps-c size sensor.

It's almost too many megapixels. Storage will become a serious issue.

@Chuckl881 @phototristan - The SD14 stores those images at 4.6MP, not at 3.4. :) Just to clarify.
