She sang until she could and we all admired her for this: she made two generations dream, she will be remembered as the century legend of opera. Her language has never been a problem: she never pronounced Italian language as she should have done, but no matter, her singing has been adored from us Italian too!
I received a thank you for the birthday card I sent her in November. In it she said she was doing well, and hopefully would be able to walk without the aid of a walker or cane.
She is just such a lovely woman. God Blessed us with her, and her voice.
Apparently Dame Joan is convalescing at home in Switzerland, while husband Richard is completing, or has just completed, his season with the Australian Opera.
is there a Dame Joan health update ? because she broke her both legs last year., 2008, this video is from 2007This is terrible for an old lady like her.Could she walk again ?Any news ?
Boh.
@lantis323f What a ridiculous award ceremony. Poor Dame Joan had to turn her back on the audience to address the presenters who stood behind her at the back of the stage. Why can't they learn English, like the rest of Europe, instead of resorting to a translation to interrupt Dame Joan's thank you speech.
Dame Joan Sutherland's name itself is a synonym of Opera in History and yet, she is kind enough to acknowledge Pagliughi's talent and vocal prowess. This only confirms to me that the true noble are truly humble.
Intersting that she was the one who kept telling Luciono Pavarotti to retire! But he kept on until he couldn't do so any more. Dame Joan is so classy!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this touching and lovely clip. It is typical of our Joan that she would have such kind things to say of Pagliughi's voice. She had suffered some ill health in the past few years, a rheumatic ailment that is not permanent, but which strikes people at her time of life. I am happy that she seems much healthier than she did at the Kennedy Center Honors. Joan, we still adore you!
Well, she is now 81--I think she looks pretty fantastic! I know a lot of people in their 70s who look much older. She seems aware and lively and speaks like a much younger person, so I hope I am in that good shape after 80!
I hated opera until one night@16. I heard Joan on TV. My life changed I was finalist in Met Nationals and so on. Had a career, tenor, retired early and never stopped loving Dame Joan. She is as kind and wonderful in person as she appears - she once told me that she would be a bit "long in the tooth" by the time I could have sung with her. I am 60+ now and I will always be her greatest fan, truly "Great of voice and great of spirit". What a priveledge and thanks for posting this!
I also thank you for posting this. I heard that she recently had knee replacements, and they seem to be doing the job, since Dame Joan still stands with that great regal presence! So good to see her!
Echoing others, thank you for sharing this with us all. Lovers of Dame Joan will be ecstatic to see this. I had heard that a few months ago she was not in good health, but it appears that she is doing well now. It makes me very happy. Thank you again!
Thank you so much brividokaldo, for sharing this moment with all of us....admirers and fans of Dame Joan. It's wonderful to see her, and a great joy to me that she is still with us in this world.
Dear SueAnn: You have such an incredible collection of Sutherland and such a great appreciation of her: I sang with her (as a chorister) in 6 productions and will never ever forget that incredible sound and what a truly beautiful human being she was....

maybe its a kind of formal gesture a Dame of the British Empire express herself officaialy in English.............
this is how diplomatically presidents or kings do...even if privately they talk to each others in any language.
well SUTHERLAND is a joy !!!! WONDERFULL LADY
AWESOME DAME
LIVE FOREVER!!!

@lantis323f e allora????

A great soprano. .. Shame the ceremony was such a typically disorganised Italian mess!

...Ehm: I meant: I totally agree with BuZakariyya2008 last comment: that she's a great soprano, and that such a ridiculous ceremony was a shame.

Truly she is marvelous. I had one of her early albums of arias and got acquainted with her voice range. Amazing.
suzeann2008 3 years ago
Joan knew her worth and respected the traditions of singers who preceded her. She did not need to put down others to puff herself up.
Joan's words about the great Lina Pagliughi are from one artist who understands great singing and can appreciate it in others.
Miss you Dame Joan and Lina Pagliughi
