  • Hello Head Coach Takeuchi and TI Team

I am just a beginer to learn freestyle. So far, I can go 9 strokes but can not turn my body to side to get air in. Everytime I try to turn to side water go in to my nose and fill up my ear and I have to stop. Would you please show me how to balance the body to breath?

    Thanks in advance!

  • wow this is real smooth. thanks for posting

  • This guy surely has a wonderful, graceful style! He doesn't slash the water either with his hands or with his legs. Very nice!

  • I dont know if you respond to old videos, but I just started TI because of them and have improved a lot my freestyle swim by learning from your videos.

I have a simple question: is your leg beat on open water the same as in the pool (2-beat)? Also, are you able to take a good breath right after sighting ? It seems like a very short breathing. Thanks !

  • @Swimbird82,

It is a good question. Since legs float more in the salt water, I try not to pick up my heels, but push down my insteps.

I take enough time for breathing. I roll up very quickly so I can start to breathe earlier than normal breathing.

  • alucinanteeee

  • Takeuchi Sensei, fabulous swim stroke in both pool and open water. You have inspired me to concentrate on the TI approach to swimming. It has helped me in the pool, but I am having trouble in the open water with this method. Could you please tell me some tips for open water swimming, with or without wetsuit. Thank you for your generosity in sharing videos and information. Iku zo!

  • 1) Breathing

Since your head is submerged, you roll your head with the body more with the momentum you can get when you spear your hand.

    2) Wider track

To stabilize your body, you enter your hands wider but extend them straight.

  • Thank you very much. I will work on it today. I have told all my swimmer friends to check out your videos: they are the best!

  • Does this concept emphasis on hand power? You don't seem to be kicking

  • Magnificent.. just MAGNIFICENT! More videos like this one, please!

  • The one thing I notice, not just with graceful TI swimmers but most swimmers, is the the high degree of flexibility through the chest and shoulder area that enables such high and effortless elbow and arm extension. Do you consciously work on this aspect or are you naturally flexible. Great video..I always want to go swimming after watching these videos.

  • Do you recommend the finis freestyle paddle?

  • Yes. I sometime use junior paddles when I focus on hand entry. Senior paddles are too big for me since I do not intend to build muscles for pulling.

  • hmm, but are they only good for hand entry or can they, for instance, improve the underwater arm movement technique?

  • Shinji thanks for the videos and tips. Your videos have been most helpful in conjunction with the TI instructional video/book. My front crawl has improved grealty!

  • I am grad I could help you to improve your stroke. I will post more videos near future.

  • Do you breathe when you sight? it looks as if you just pop your head up to sight and miss the breath.

  • I breathe with right side after sighting.

  • I noticed on the TI japan website that you listed the Tinis Forewarm Fulcrum as a training tool. I recently just bought them but do not feel a great (or any) difference in my stroke. I know that it is suppose to keep your wrist locked, but I already keep it locked throughout my stroke. Do you recommend that I continue to train with it? What other advantages does it have?

  • If you can do "high elbows" for both recovery and pull, you do not need it. I mainly use it for breaststroke practice.

  • Can you see he has less mobility with his left arm/shoulder than the right one? ;-)

(I can't get enough of this video)

  • Good point.

That is what I am trying to improve.

  • Love the front view. Really shows how relaxed his arms (and shoulders) are.

  • that is awesome.
