With the cat we had when I was a kid, my stepmom hit on the idea of dumping her into one of those mesh lingerie bags, zipping her in, and washing her bag and all. Worked like a charm. She was covered in all this weird wet cloth stuff and didn't know what to make of it, so she just sat in the tub doing that Piteous RRROWL thing they do when they're unhappy. Worth noting: she was also declawed in front (no, I don't approve)--dunno how it'd work if the cat has all their claws.

Fortunately, he's a Turkish Van (a breed that tends to like water, and some even swim), which means I can just put him in the sink, and he sits there, meowing pitifully, licking my hand because that's what I taught him to do when he wants to be let go.
