how fast do passenger trains in america go?in britain the "high speed" trains run about 125mph and the regional ones between 75-100mph and there are plans to build a new high speed line comparable to the ones in europe
Great video and really fast trains. The Brits also have some really fast trains - slightly faster than these..... judge for yourself at watch?v=1lSYDbYrXIo and one of their latest built about a year ago watch?v=xF2Jgg1LpzU
Love your video. My 3 yr old grandson loves trains. We live in Kansas and see freight trains all the time. Amtrak comes thru here in middle of night, so we don't see them. Thanks!
check out the indian railways.the indian locos are full of power.but acording to my knowledge as far we compare speed they are far behind. send ur comments
very nice video. especially the new electrified sections towards Boston. It was also great to see the approach to the Hell Gate Bridge. That's worth its weight in gold.
It's not high speed but'd it be nice to capture the new switching manuevers at New Rochelle, NY since the trackwork was re-done at the fork where the former New Haven RR goes toward Grand Central Station and the Amtraks head towards Penn Station.
Fast is relative...... These trains are slow compared to the rest of the world. When we finally reach 186mph like Europe did in the EARLY 90s then let's start talking "fast"
I still perferr my National System to the NEC. The flashing of the light of the NH painted train unit reminds me when I worked the 400's between Chicago and Milwaukee 85 miles in 75 minutes with four stops! He said "Hello" but when we did it. It ment we were out of the station and you can pass. You could not pass an other train unloading at a station!( low level plateforms)
Hey DC3rairoadman Im a Rhode Islander and recognize that reoccurring shot , that bend of track between the Union Ave bridge and the Cranston St underpass! Used to hang under that bridge when it was a wood and tar-covered relic; nearly twenty years ago !!! Ah, I can still smell the grease on hot summers afternoon, taking refuge under Union Ave, waiting for the next train....or the Amtrack police!!! Oh the memmories!! Thanks DC3rrm!!! Central Falls RR Station @ 3:45; Narragansett Brewery @ 1:38!
The Narragansett Brewery! Boy are we talking "old school." When I first hired on the railroad they were still getting serviced by Conrail. A few months later it was all gone. Now there isn't even a trace of the brewery or the railroad that served it!
Wow, superb high speed train collection. I guess this would be similar to our eurostar trains except they don't go as fast as yours. I must admit, I didn't realise that such trains existed in USA so will have to do research into them. Superb. Also can you tell me what the backing track is to this video - thanks
Thank you for this site. I was stationed in Aberdeen, MD in 1967. It was so fun to hop a train to get to New York City, Baltimore or DC. That was then. Now I live in Iowa. Here's hoping that we'll get rail transportation improvements soon!. Thank you, again!
WELL I don't know verry god the railway sistem in USA but its one great diference between EURAIL and US RAILWAY. In European Union the rail transport are considerate one ecologic transport in contradiction with auto transport. Are builted one interoperabilitty line between France- UK - HOLLAND - Germany - Austria- Hungary- Romania- SWITZERLAND and now Spain ( SNCF - SCOTRAIL - DB - SBB- OBB - MAV - RENFE - SNCFR )
and watch how expensive things get to have them shipped.......that'll then drive prices up in stores...car lots.....and your way of living....all for a fuckin rail line id never use....
Well it really won't. Because of the millions that would travel by train. The price of gas would drop! After 9-11 gas went down 10 cents a gallon because there was no air service and airplanes really use alot fuel. So if you want cheap gas get everyone you can on a train. That's why they got rid of the rail systems to sell fuel. And electric trains really give the oil people a heart attack. It's OK you won't use it. If it's a good service everyone else will. You could have the road to yourself!
id love to travel by train....but unfortunately, no trains other than CSX runs thru Montgomery. closest Amtrak station is Birmingham, about 90 miles north of me. If Amtrak's routing was more pronounced and laid out, Id ride trains left and right.
I understand, the closest Amtrak line the "California Zephyr" runs about 100 miles south of me. And often late, and sold out. These trains are run just to spread the costs of the Northeast corridor out accross the county. A few years ago, Montgomery had a train. The station was in a old grain elevator. I got off there and spent a very nice day walking around and checking things out. The train came back and picked me up it was jammed with people in the two cars they had on it.
Well Amtrak which has had to fight for it's life every year. Had to come up with a new route cut. This section of the "Cresent Limited" to Washington and New York was discontinued. But since Amtrak gets most of it's income from high revenue long distance services. Everytime they drop a LD route. They lose even more money! But it looks good to the congressmen who are part of the oil and highway and airline lobby. A smaller Amtrak is a better Amtrak???????
These facts are alittle bit old, but, 20 trains provided 60% of the income of the whole company. They are all the long distance trains which year after year were downsized or cut from operation. There is some hope now that some of these trains might be restored. But I would feel better if I didn't see trains running on routes far from major cities, Like Des Moines, IA and Madison, Wis. More trains would bring income up and price per seat down. So with lower fares you'd have higher ridership.
Well Amtrak and the city on Montgomery faught and the ending result was Amtrak pulling out and leaving Montgomery ass'ed out. There's portions of the country that doesnt even see Amtrak. Id love to see a rail system in the US so nice and tight, it'd be like the Northeast Corridor all over the country. Jus park your car at a park n ride lot and catch to train someplace. It'll beat Greyhound and sure as hell be cheaper than flying.

@jyto56 Why not? Sounds like bent rail to me. (Heavy freights run on that track which bends the rails) The Nickel Plate Road ordered it's waiters in the Dining Car to fill the Coffee cups always full. If the coffee spilled it was free! Yahoo that!
@granskare The Northeast Corridor loses 600 million dollars ayear. But they have a train or two accross the country. So Amtrak can spread the cost of the NEC over the whole country. They cook the books! Without the Northeast Corridor Amtrak would make money. They also know that it's a federal program. And as soon as the places that don't have service out number the places that do. Congress won't have the votes to continue the Northeast Corridor. That would end the whole system.
@intercityrailpal The commuter services which depend on Amtrak for routes and services would end also. Because they couldn't pick up the costs which Des Moines and Nashville are now paying for. (That don't have service) Bye, Bye, NJtransit, MTASEPTA etc. So don't turn your nose up at a train to Des Moines. We need and want train too!
You are ignoring a few points - High speed rail is government funded all over the world. This is the only country that expects rail service to be private enterprise. And don't even start about the other transportation entities being self sufficient - until shipping companies build their own ports, airlines their own airports and car and truck companies their own roads, bridges, et al. Most if not all transportation has government underpinning.
@intercityrailpal the NEC how do they lose money? i think they make alot of money especially on week days around rush hrs. i take that train and ppl have to stand up! the NEC runs thru 34th st, newark and rahway and trenton rite?
I don't have the space here on youtube to explain all the details. But the only profitable part of the the NEC is the real estate. The trains have low ticket yield and high fixed costs. In the NEC Amtrak owns and maintains the 4 track lines.Outside the corridor, they rent the railroads. The NEC is a higher speed operation, which is higher costs. On top of a area which is already high in costs, everything costs more in the NEC houseing, food, taxes etc. So it costs more to run a railroad there too.
For years Amtrak put out what people of the Northeast wanted to hear. That the NEC was profitable. But the last few presidents of Amtrak from Dave Gunn on admitted the corridor was a money pit.Without allocated costs of the corridor. The rest of the system might be profitable. But the highway and airline lobby seem to be dead set against trains outside the NEC.There have been articles in Trains magazine and others about this over the years.I'm sure you can find this on your computer search engine.
If you check out the annual reports of the old railroads you'll see where the loses were, not on the mail carrying (at that time) long distance trains. But short distance corridor and commuter services. Where equipment and crews sit around all day and night between rush hours.Soon Amtrak will be buying new corridor cars, and soon wants to upgrade the Jersey raceway from 135 to 150. That will be big money. Yes, it should be done. But we need a national system. So we ALL benefit from these costs.
The old railroads some of which were Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, Erie-Lackawanna, Central of New Jersey and others. All went bankrupt. Conrail took over assets they wanted and returned the rest to the company to keep or get rid of. Amtrak took over the passenger the government was permitted to save. The corridor is Washington to Boston over 400 miles. With branches developing to Portland, Maine and Richmond Virginia. The Jersey raceway is part of the NEC, Yes.
even though the trains over seas are pretty cool, since i stay stateside I'll be satisfied with acela's 150 or the chief doing 90 between ft madison ia and kc. do u work for a rr?
It is stupid that the few high speed trains we do have only travel between Boston and New York. There is talk about a high speed line between Chicago and Milwaukee, and Chicago and St. Louis. But just talk. We need to stop just talking about short high speed lines, and start talking about and then building nation wide high speed lines. We by no means shouldn't hold the world record for worlds largest high speed domestic railway.
they have to have high speed here in the east besides taking the airshuttle from say NYC the acela is the alternate to air travel its a hell of a lot more money to travel by acela but well worth it. I see Metra out in chicago has some electric trains so its kinda of a start in the right direction
Well I've been riding the Metra my whole life, but I've never been on one of the electric lines but I know that the electric lines aren't high speed, but its not the Metra I'm talking about, just Amtrak. Because lets face it some people just can't stand flying, not me personally but if your afraid flying you shouldn't have sit on a long boring slow train ride or an unbearable three day car ride.
well if you want to get techinical between boston and washington there are a ton of trains Amtrak NEC line, MARC, SEPTA NJ Transit, Mtro North, LIRR in long island, and last but not least MBTA so if you think about it between Boston and DC there are alot of trains.
@flyewr1907 And Des Moines is paying for it. The only train Iowa has (that sells out most of the time)"California Zepyhr" runs 50 miles to the south(Osceola) of the largest city In Iowa which is bigger than Hartford, CT which has 12 trains a day! Des Moines like Hartford is a Insurance center and Banking center. The Northeast also gets it's trains free. Everyone else has to pay! (403-b) Why? This has to stop!
Pretty doubtful... and yeah, you're pretty much right. While they're both ultimately electric, that diesel engine weighs a hefty bit, not to mention its fuel--even though a diesel locomotive is still FAR more efficient than any other form of transportation.
Per CSX, "moving 1 ton of freight 470 miles on 1 gallon of diesel."
High-speed electrics are just restricted to corridors with supply lines, obviously.
The answer to your question SkyWarnCZ. Thats Hell Gate Bridge, at (time 2:50) (If you didn't know the name of it). It's located in between the area's of the Bronx and Queens near NYC. I looked it up on Wikipedia.
I'll assure you, this is NOT a time lapse. These trains are going normal speeds in their area (the Acela in the beginning was somewhere between 120 - 150 MPH.).
Actually, Shinkansen is the most fastest train in the world now. Anyway, I like Tokyu 2000 series ( 1992 ) and Keikyu 2100, Odakyu 1000, Tokyu 9000 ( 1985 )
Even though they are older train, but I think those trains are very high-technology at that time in the world~ ^o^ So, I don' care about how looks of European or American train. To me, they are not attractive trains compares to japanese trains.
Oh no, the WMG nazis strike again! The other song was a million times cooler. Don't get me wrong, this one is cool too, but man - the other one was perfect!
JAAAAA.
beautiful trains with a very good pendulation system!!
However, European high Speed is much more developed (France, Spain, Germany...). in the USA, due to the long distances, planes are the main means of transport and trains are better used in medium distances as it happens within European countries.
FYI... 1) The Acela is built better and safer then the TGV.... 2) The Acela can do anything the TGV can do..... 3) The Acela runs on a rail system that is older then your great grand mother, TGV Dose not, so it can run faster on it's new high speed track system.... 4) I made my point....LOL
the tgv was developed by Alstom, but uses some bombardier technologies (ex. gear boogies.) While the Acela was 75% done by bombardier and 25% of Alstom
Well, so you're a great fan of the Acela. Good for you and I respect your point on that. I'm just as passionate about the TGV and just expressed my personal opinion. Made my point too, eh? RESPECT.
I Like the TGV designs as well as all the Alstom/ Bombardier Locos, Trainsets and Rolling Stock......LOL Never said I didn't.... I prefer trains built for US service because they are more of a robust versatile safer and attractive design.....LOL
It's a shame that this is probably the only high speed rail line currently in the U.S.A. at this time. I'm glad that Obama is pushing for a nation-wide system.
Well a I wouldn't want a nation wide system. Bullet trains should service the big city regional areas. Or we'd loose the beuty of long distance railroad. A thing that is not so familiar with the rest of the world.
VERY COOL

@intercityrailpal the NEC how do they lose money? i think they make alot of money especially on week days around rush hrs. i take that train and ppl have to stand up! the NEC runs thru 34th st, newark and rahway and trenton rite?
SiiSTALUV 2 years ago
I don't have the space here on youtube to explain all the details. But the only profitable part of the the NEC is the real estate. The trains have low ticket yield and high fixed costs. In the NEC Amtrak owns and maintains the 4 track lines.Outside the corridor, they rent the railroads. The NEC is a higher speed operation, which is higher costs. On top of a area which is already high in costs, everything costs more in the NEC houseing, food, taxes etc. So it costs more to run a railroad there too.
intercityrailpal 2 years ago
For years Amtrak put out what people of the Northeast wanted to hear. That the NEC was profitable. But the last few presidents of Amtrak from Dave Gunn on admitted the corridor was a money pit.Without allocated costs of the corridor. The rest of the system might be profitable. But the highway and airline lobby seem to be dead set against trains outside the NEC.There have been articles in Trains magazine and others about this over the years.I'm sure you can find this on your computer search engine.
intercityrailpal 2 years ago
If you check out the annual reports of the old railroads you'll see where the loses were, not on the mail carrying (at that time) long distance trains. But short distance corridor and commuter services. Where equipment and crews sit around all day and night between rush hours.Soon Amtrak will be buying new corridor cars, and soon wants to upgrade the Jersey raceway from 135 to 150. That will be big money. Yes, it should be done. But we need a national system. So we ALL benefit from these costs.
intercityrailpal 2 years ago
The old railroads some of which were Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, Erie-Lackawanna, Central of New Jersey and others. All went bankrupt. Conrail took over assets they wanted and returned the rest to the company to keep or get rid of. Amtrak took over the passenger the government was permitted to save. The corridor is Washington to Boston over 400 miles. With branches developing to Portland, Maine and Richmond Virginia. The Jersey raceway is part of the NEC, Yes.

From what I understand, I think the Acela tops out at around 165-170.
flyewr1907 2 years ago
to bad that it only goes up to 150 on the route, and theres so many speed restrictions, that you only get 150 for a fraction of the time...

We by no means shouldn't hold the world record for worlds largest high speed domestic railway.
southparkfan2717 2 years ago
they have to have high speed here in the east besides taking the airshuttle from say NYC the acela is the alternate to air travel its a hell of a lot more money to travel by acela but well worth it. I see Metra out in chicago has some electric trains so its kinda of a start in the right direction
retroguy1976 2 years ago
Well I've been riding the Metra my whole life, but I've never been on one of the electric lines but I know that the electric lines aren't high speed, but its not the Metra I'm talking about, just Amtrak. Because lets face it some people just can't stand flying, not me personally but if your afraid flying you shouldn't have sit on a long boring slow train ride or an unbearable three day car ride.
southparkfan2717 2 years ago
well if you want to get techinical between boston and washington there are a ton of trains Amtrak NEC line, MARC, SEPTA NJ Transit, Mtro North, LIRR in long island, and last but not least MBTA so if you think about it between Boston and DC there are alot of trains.
flyewr1907 2 years ago
I'm talking about a nationwide high speed railway, that's what we need.
southparkfan2717 2 years ago
@flyewr1907 And Des Moines is paying for it. The only train Iowa has (that sells out most of the time)"California Zepyhr" runs 50 miles to the south(Osceola) of the largest city In Iowa which is bigger than Hartford, CT which has 12 trains a day! Des Moines like Hartford is a Insurance center and Banking center. The Northeast also gets it's trains free. Everyone else has to pay! (403-b) Why? This has to stop!

one question, diesel trains go slower than ice 3 electric trains because of weight, right? i mean, could a diesel locomotive go at 200mph?
Danotto9797 2 years ago
Pretty doubtful... and yeah, you're pretty much right. While they're both ultimately electric, that diesel engine weighs a hefty bit, not to mention its fuel--even though a diesel locomotive is still FAR more efficient than any other form of transportation.
Per CSX, "moving 1 ton of freight 470 miles on 1 gallon of diesel."
High-speed electrics are just restricted to corridors with supply lines, obviously.
anthonykorsen007 2 years ago
@ Danotto9797: There is a diesel ICE train: the ICE-TD: it's maximum speed is (if I remember it right) 280 km/h.

This is a timelape.. not really fast trains.
trainfart 2 years ago
I'll assure you, this is NOT a time lapse. These trains are going normal speeds in their area (the Acela in the beginning was somewhere between 120 - 150 MPH.).
DeltaPhi79 2 years ago
love this song an the vid since i love trains :D
angelkat0021 2 years ago
Actually, Shinkansen is the most fastest train in the world now. Anyway, I like Tokyu 2000 series ( 1992 ) and Keikyu 2100, Odakyu 1000, Tokyu 9000 ( 1985 )
Even though they are older train, but I think those trains are very high-technology at that time in the world~ ^o^ So, I don' care about how looks of European or American train. To me, they are not attractive trains compares to japanese trains.

JAAAAA.

beautiful trains with a very good pendulation system!!
However, European high Speed is much more developed (France, Spain, Germany...). in the USA, due to the long distances, planes are the main means of transport and trains are better used in medium distances as it happens within European countries.

your right. even there catenary system is advance. In the Us some still use MA system while EUR uses static inverters systems for there catenary

Nothing to beat the French TGV :-)
uchilledfrance 2 years ago
FYI... 1) The Acela is built better and safer then the TGV.... 2) The Acela can do anything the TGV can do..... 3) The Acela runs on a rail system that is older then your great grand mother, TGV Dose not, so it can run faster on it's new high speed track system.... 4) I made my point....LOL
mrrayco 2 years ago
there all true except the acela is a tad slower than the tgv, but the acela's interior is wayyy better, and the acela also looks better... :P

Ditto on the Great Looks of the Acela....

Weren't both the acela and the TGV built (or at the least designed) by Alstom?

LOL.. YES....
mrrayco 2 years ago

snowball787 2 years ago
the tgv was developed by Alstom, but uses some bombardier technologies (ex. gear boogies.) While the Acela was 75% done by bombardier and 25% of Alstom
snowball787 2 years ago
Well, so you're a great fan of the Acela. Good for you and I respect your point on that. I'm just as passionate about the TGV and just expressed my personal opinion. Made my point too, eh? RESPECT.
uchilledfrance 2 years ago
I Like the TGV designs as well as all the Alstom/ Bombardier Locos, Trainsets and Rolling Stock......LOL Never said I didn't.... I prefer trains built for US service because they are more of a robust versatile safer and attractive design.....LOL
mrrayco 2 years ago
It's neat that you all think the Acela is so great, and yes... it can do what the TGV can do.
But it doesn't.
So the TGV is better.

It's a shame that this is probably the only high speed rail line currently in the U.S.A. at this time. I'm glad that Obama is pushing for a nation-wide system.
CJWJR 2 years ago
Well a I wouldn't want a nation wide system. Bullet trains should service the big city regional areas. Or we'd loose the beuty of long distance railroad. A thing that is not so familiar with the rest of the world.
traindude80 2 years ago
What I think he means by nation wide is not for the 200 mph/ 320 km/h but the 110 mph/180 km/h systems nationwide
mugshotesp 2 years ago
Yeah well It shouldn't be electrified.
traindude80 2 years ago
