  • Really one of the greatest bands ever.

  • If one of Tori Amos' fingers falls asleep and dreams its a boy band this is one of the songs it'll play on a Wintry aethereal starry moonlit Spring nocturna Summers Fall eve. But you already knew that, right

  • I didn't know much about this old band... but I can see here how this influence to portishead or moloko and same others actual bands...Am I crazy???????? I came here after listening an old cover of them from Radiohead, so I thank you so much for Uploading this one...

  • One of the best intros ever!!

  • Utterly magnificent after all these years, looking forward to the new album

  • Probably their best song. They were/are very fine musicians and this song displays that quality admirably.

  • Love Magazine.

  • this is an amzing video :)

  • wonderful ,i always love magazine

  • God, I love these. And this song...

  • The have been my true Gods for last 30years. I will, and cannot forget them. But I agree with the opinion that they are forgotten by the"common people" Perfect band for a melancholy Swede.....

  • @newellgirl you on the ball with John McGeoch. A brilliant guitarist who had real colour in his playing.

  • Beautiful!

  • surely Sky Arts Ch 243 should show this gig in its entirety?

  • These Magazine vids are like a time-warp back to my early 20's.....magnificent

  • The Band! Greatest!

  • I will NEVER sell my double l.p. bootleg of Live in Boston ever ever..... and my position is somehwere between the waitress and her table........

  • Magazine with Robin Simon on guitar. A truly beautifully performed version of this great song. Barry Adamson's bass is 'out there'. Howard Devoto and Magazine - way ahead of their time and still sound great even today! I recently saw them live in Glasgow (February 2009). Awesome.

  • @stewbabyification i was there too and after that in Edinburgh, they sounded as good as tey did in 1979 when Simple Minds was the support band!

  • @TalkToTheBody. Thanx for the comments - we are indeed connisseurs of greatness! Can you remember seeing Bauhaus as a Magazine support act too? I thought the Correct Use of Soap gig in Edinburgh sounded quite amazing!!

  • @stewbabyification I never got chancde to see Magazine on their Soap tour, I saw them in 79 on their Secondhand Daylight tour, my favourite album even though I class Soap as a Classic. In fact I would say all the first three albums are classics. I remember Bauhaus but Bella Lugosi's Dead was the only song they were famous for but it went down well at the local Roxy style nightclubs. I chatted to Magazine after the Edinburgh gig and the earlier Glasgow gig was done only 2 weeks after forming!

  • I have always loved Magazine, this song is a beautifully haunting love song I never get tired of hearing. Thanks for posting this.

  • Howar devoto .De lo mejorcito

  • Just Genius, thankyou Howard.. still as good as ever 30 years on

  • Date a Asian lady # lushfmlk.info #

  • Such a fantastic song. The keyboards...wonderful. Barry's bass...as always :)

The number of times I have listened to this track can't be counted over the years...yet STILL it sends a shiver down my spine 30 years later.

If I'm honest I prefer the studio version, but this is my favourite & most listened to Magazine tune...

  • howard . my hero.

  • Asian sugar babies #lushfmlk.info#

  • a masterpiece of pop music

  • What does he say in 3:20 ? My position is somewhere between a waitress and a....? Please help me somebody who's not quite as deaf as me ;)

  • @psykoosi "between a waitress and her table."

  • @psykoosi "A waitress and a table"

  • a great song from a great album from a great band, still underrated

  • Really really like this track. Proves how clever the music and lyrics they came up with were. Very brave at the time.....This and Definitive Gaze were tracks well ahead of their time even more so than other Magazine tracks....Like DF's cover on his album with David Mcalmont.

  • Once more...

  • Thom Yorke is a big fan of this band, and doesnt he resemble Howard Devoto in looks in this video, Magazine, are truly mesmerising.

  • Magazine is one of my favorite bands. Right up there with The Velvet Underground.

  • If Ian Curtis hadn't of hung himself I don't think Joy division would be all that memorable...

  • magazine owns

  • I love that scene in 24 hour party people with the real Howard Devoto in the bathroom as the janitor. He says I really dont remember having sex with that guys wife. Totally awesome.

  • Really disappointing that these guys are over-looked so much. All my friends of a similar age are also into alternative (ugh! sorry I hate that term but can't think of a better one..) music, they know their Joy Divisions et al but not this band.

I'm doing my very small part to get them heard but they really deserve much more credit.

  • I saw Devoto sing this in Los Angeles when he toured with Luxuria. My favorite magazine song.

  • My god, were they the best band ever or what? tragic that the public didnt cotton on, even the critics sung their praises....rare! on a par with bands like the Doors, no doubt, its not too late to pay your appreciation all you disenfranchised young intelectuals!.

  • 'on a par with bands like the Doors'

Or perhaps far better!!! Devoto's lyrics are far more complex, grating yet beautiful than Morrisons ever were.

  • I whole hartily agree.

  • @gummybits were????? They still are and their new album is great, and I am seeing them again in Glasgow next week. Happy days!

  • simply stunning,saw them 1978 at keele university,just brilliant

  • REAL LIFE...A MASTERPIECE

  • Cockney Rebel! oh dear...

  • maybe he means cockney rejects......oh! dear indeed

  • "...one step ahead of relief.." I love that line. It really hit the mark for me in 78/79 when I used to listen to this track....also..."now that I'm out of touch with anger..." I used to wonder what it meant.

  • It meant that devotot was out of touch with his punk beginings, too mature and cynical for youthyfull instinctive angst.

  • This is my nefarious weekend substance comedown song. I put it on when my beautiful woman gets pissed off with me and goes to bed, leaving me alone with my music. Aaah!

  • Exit light, enter night

  • One of the best Magazine songs, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Pure genius.

  • quality, prog punk

  • much more robotic, stuttery than the album cut. very nice

  • Have only just found out about this song via the new Nouvelle Vague lp, previously I only knew one song by Magazine, Shot by Both Sides.

Very impressed with Parade, great feel to it.

  • If one of Tori Amos' fingers falls asleep;dreams its a boy band; this is one of the songs it'll play on a Wintry aethereal starry moonlit Spring nocturna Summers Fall eve. But you already knew that, right razorgirlz & gyz?

  • best band ever, my favourite Magazine song...

  • There's no 'a' at the beginning of ethereal

    Apart from that I'm sure you've got a point...but I'm b*ggered if I know what it is.

  • " It depends on ow you spell it, mate."

  • Fair dooz

  • wow. superb. hadn't heard this in years.

    TYVM for posting this.

    absolutely brilliant

  • one of the best punk bands in the world

  • Post-punk in peak of music., nice song

  • If one of Tori Amos' fingers falls asleep and dreams its a boy band this is one of the songs it'll play on a wintry aethereal starry moonlit spring nocturna summers fall eve.

  • So thankful that this even EXISTS, fantastic.

    Nice work, Sham.

  • simply brilliant!

  • Going by how good this is, the applause should have been a LOT louder I think. I think it was subdued because the song was a bit too on the urbane side for a punky audience. Could be wrong of course, I'm not much of an applauder anyway. More of a waffler as you can tell.

  • This band was so under valued!

  • Perhaps bemusement. I came away from one of his first gigs wondering why no rendition of Buzzcocks. Like a fine wine Magazine grows on you. Unlike a fine wine it took weeks rather than years. There's been better bands - Uriah Heep, Glen Miller, The Osmonds.

Ask me one band that defines my life, I may say Girls Aloud but I'd really mean Magazine.

  • Almost(but not actually) forgotten I have this album on Vinyl, must digitize it and listen to it in all its glory!

  • fri 13th,aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • I own a double album (vinyl) recorded live in Boston, USA called "Back to Nature" (live in Boston '79; Centrifugal 12CENT-10C) - bought from USA for $5 last year! Not for sale!

  • I have 2 tickets for Manchester on the Saturday and 2 for Glasgow on the Monday - Magazine were simply one of the best bands of all time - get the album 'Play' - best live album I own.

  • Oh my god! Brings back great memories!

    This is truly great.

  • People too intelligent to be stars, but enough to be remembered forever.

  • what a brilliant comment vokshumana

  • First heard this song back in 1978 and it still sounds fucking awesome , so underrated by the commercial world of music! Their loss I say !!

  • whos the guitarist on here Sham,I dont recognise him, (its not John McGeough is it?)

  • John sadly died in his sleep on the 4th March 2004. Played with Magazine, the Banshees, PIL, Viage etc and was a legend!

  • thats so sad about John McGeough, his guitar playing was genius, it was like the sound of air circulating from his guitar , it was ethereal.

  • Yip, the 'classic' Magazine line-up will have to wait until a later date in the sky - what about Robin Simon though who features on the Play album and also on Ultravox - Systems of Romance - where is he now? Tremendous guitarist!

  • Wow, what a find. And yes, they are reforming, its true and I have got 2 tickets for the Forum!!!!!

I presume this is the video version of the live album "Play" recorded in Australia in 1980?

How did you get hold of this? Was the whole gig shown? Was the video ever commercially released (I have the singles video collection)? If so I want a copy!!!

Spooky how closely Dave Formula resembled Billy Currie. Must have been VERY confusing for people at the Visage recording sessions!

  • No this is from Berlin but also 1980. Most of the gig is up on Youtube if you do a search.

  • I think Billy and Dave look a like too!

  • @ravinella i can do u a dvd copy of this gig if u can do me the singles video collection??

  • What a band!

  • Ive been trying to find this stuff on limewire, What an awsome find. This never gets old.

  • Why not buy it, you tight arsed monkey?

  • The only thing you'll find on Limewire is a virus mate lol

  • Great song! I like Buzzcocks too...

  • "Sometimes I forget that we're supposed to be in love

    Sometimes I forget....

    my position!"

  • Yeah,Great band.Second hand daylight is my favorite album.Thanks for posting Sham64.

    Peace.

  • he could easy be Thom Yorke

  • Without him, Thom Yorke would not exist.

Radiohead was self admittedly HEAVILY influenced by Magazine.

  • yes, and I think MUSE are influenced by them too

  • John Leckie produced Magazine, then Radiohead "The Bends" and also MUSE hence the similar excellent production sounds

  • And Simple Minds, just listen to their first album, Life In A Day.

  • @vokshumana Simple Minds played all the Life in a Day album to perfection when they supported Magazine back in 1979, awesome gig

  • @TalkToTheBody I wish I could've been there, but I wasn't even born yet. lol

  • @BootyFister it was a very memorable night but neither Simple Minds or Magazine were that well known back then, both just budding bands back in early 79. It's only when you look back at what you experienced back then that makes it amazing.

  • @TalkToTheBody Sounds like it would've been an awesome show. I've been a fan of both of those bands my whole life. My parents introduced me to them when I was young. lol

  • @BootyFister Then you have very respectable parents for sure. You can find bootleg Magazine DVD's on ebay that compiles all those videos you can find on You Tube and also from their earlier VHS release and also Magazine's official DVD that was released a few years ago can be bought from Amazon.

  • @TalkToTheBody Fantastic!!! I'm definitely going to have to buy that DVD and maybe a few bootlegs. I love bootlegs.

  • @BootyFister The DVD is on Amazon and features the band as they are now upon reforming with Noko, got to Amazon and look for the DVD "Magazine - Real Life&Thereafter:In Concert Manchester 02/09 ".

  • @TalkToTheBody YEEEAAAHH!!!!! WILL DO!!!

  • @Assshhhhhhh:

Who are Radiohead ? They ripped off XTC, Magazine + very boring phases of later Pink Floyd....etc etc.

Just writing "Creep" (which has doubtable awful lyrics content) or "Just" doens´t make a band lasting in impression forever...in my opinion.

  • its so hot in here..what are they trying to hatch, we must not be frail, we must watch

  • echo Devito46 Magazine the best and most underated band of all time saw them sprodacily in 78-79 but followed Correct Use of Soap tour round britain. always part of my life listen to them everyday, like other bands but always come back to these unique musicians and would pay anything to see them reform even if just a one off gig So Howard and the boys what about a commemorative gig to remember John McGeoch who was the best guitarist ever.thank you for 30 wonderful years of real life

  • frickin awesome..if this clip had John playing on it, it would fly into the stratosphere.

  • WELL SAID (M9)

  • cant stop watching magazine, iwas there and everyone is excited about joy division,i'm glad, the're loss. magazine don't in shit jo whiley style "rock", they are magazine, brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Had Mcgeoch left for the Banshees by this point?

  • nothing quite as sexy as a brilliant poet and musician - love you mr. devoto

  • One of my favourite songs, sometimes I forget that we're supposed to be in love.

  • this is one of the best band'

  • Magazine really did it for me at the time, and still does. Their music is part of me. Feel better with this music in me...

  • Maganificent.

I found live version of "Feed The Enemy" but cannot find it anymore. Could someone out there share it and/or send link to it. Please :)

  • tttttttttttttttttthe best!

  • Dave Formula!

  • Dave Formula....the best keyboard player of the eighties!!!!

  • Love this band.Have all their albums. Did not see them when they toured Australia, what a spew. Any chance for a come back.I now live in Greece and have heard no news of them.

  • does anyone know of a live performance of "you never knew me"?,or if there has ever been one recorded?

  • one of my favs songs of mine too ;)

  • grate song

  • John McGeoch left the band around July 1980 and did not play on this tour. I suspect this is the Sydney gig that was converted to the Live Album, Play. May be wrong.

  • Its from the Metropol, Berlin October 30th 1980 mate.

  • didn't he rejoin magazine for their last uk tour?

  • @clibit That´s right. I saw them on the 6th of June in Velp, The Netherlands. With John Mc Geogh. Later on I saw him with Siouxsie and the B. Strange for me. Loved both bands. But Magazine was his roots... although he was completely perfect with Suzy ...and Visage !!

  • I met John McGeoch after a Banshees gig which he played with a broken finger! This was in Chicago in the late 80s

Wonderful guy amazing guitarist. Saw Magazine in Chicago

supporting the "Correct Use of Soap" LP and they were

great. The peak song of the evening was "I Want to Burn

Again." Would that musicians like these would rise again and take their places onstage and in studio

  • Unfortunately, John McGeoch died in his sleep a few years ago aged 48, I think. Terrible waste.

  • sham..again thanks for the post of this fine gig.once again the song is nailed..enio..the guitarist was robin simon who took on the guitar playing duties for magazine during the 1980 tour...i saw magazine live in 1980..a music highlight..but i never got to see mcgeogch..either with magazine or siouxise..(robert smith was on guitar) when i saw her play australia in 1984! go figure!!

  • The first gig I ever went to was Siouxsie and the Banshees supported by the Cure with Robert Smith doubling up on guitar with her band, in '79. Sadly I never got to see Magazine live.

  • Bizarre - same here.

  • @newellgirl I saw McGeoch in Magazine on their Secondhand Daylight tour and with the Banhees on their Juju tour, both gigs at Manchester Apollo and McGeoch was amazing, totally blended into both bands and that's why Siouxsie had been trying her best to poach John for a long time before he eventually was given an offer he couldn't refuse. I loved his work with the Banshees and like Magazine the Banshees were lost without him

  • who is that guy playing guitar? john mcgeoch? I can´t beleave it. he looks completely different.

  • 1 of my favourit songs !!!

    Thank you for sharing!

    remi

  • thanx for posting...i love this song!
