  • Oh Dave. You are so much more than college music. Yet another insightful and beautiful composition. Gonna grab my six and get this one down... PEACE

  • This is amazing.... Purely beautiful

  • I love watching his left hand! Incredible :D

  • Best solo Dave by far

  • My fav!!!

  • he strums like pro

  • @Harelgur because he is a pro.

  • its message in a bottle from Sting that this fool to think sounds alot a like. just the beginning though...

  • The beginning of this song sounds just like the beginning of a Sting song. I think maybe its the song roxanne that it sounds similar to.

  • so pretty, so great

  • @jeremymango crash isn't a song it's an album... Are you talking about crash into me??

  • Oh sweet jesus, I almost forgot how freaking imcredible this night was!! Thanks for posting!

  • to whoever recorded this - AMAZING JOB!!! dave would SO love it!

  • Two people misclicked the the thumbs down for this video, no other explanation is plausible.

  • i love this song.......the ending is great as well

  • Man he nailed this show, Wish i coulda been there, i was 12 years old though... ha

  • @Phillipsfourtwentyed same thing i was thinking :D I was 11

  • I fn love u Dave

  • Great video - thank you for posting. Dave is a musical genius. His melodies and hooks are incredible - like no one else on the music scene today. Anyone can write obvious lyrics - Dave gives us something we can think about and interpret. I just wish more DMB fans would recognize his genius...that sometimes what comes out sounds quirky, but in reality he's just plain hilarious...that you shouldn't always equate his way to being influenced by one drug or another.

  • Beautiful, Perfect, Incredible song

  • I love the way he plays guitar...... Yeah its the pot im afraid.

  • This is THE hardest DMB song to play and sing to at the same time! Gaaaaah!

  • @LukieRawr proudest monkey...

  • @mYeAGz55 That too. Definitely the two I struggle with most, but I think I got a better handle on proudest monkey.

  • it really is. The chorus is in 9/8 time which makes it so hard to sing over!

  • @beanmongrel And to play drums to. When I hear Dave playing these songs by himself, I wonder WTF went through Carter's head. LOL!

  • @rwfan11 stewart copeland

  • his voice creates the melody he don't need anything else...pure beauty, pure perfection. all his music is lullabies to my ears

  • This is the best version of this song.

  • I want to learn this so bad.

  • @clcsqueejy04 Its a simple song. There are only 2 parts to it. Its just getting it up to tempo that is a struggle for me.

  • He was nervous I act the same way in front of people when Im nervous.

  • Fuckin love this!

  • I DONT CARE IF THIS SHIRT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE I GOT TITS HAHAHA LMFAO!!

  • It boggles my mind that he can sing a play this song so effortlessly, especially playing it by himself

  • 1 person disliked this.... crackhead

  • @stryker0040 hahahah agreed!!

  • classic

  • Is he doing Tarentino at the beginning?

  • Awesome...check out my cover if you get a minute. I promise it is worth your time!

  • This version of this song is amazing - it really shows the underlying structure that Dave put into it that you don't really get to hear on the studio version. I liked it live too with the full band. But this version gave me a greater appreciation for it. Thanks, Dave!!

  • alot of people don't realize this but, this is a difficult song to play and sing at the same time and this version was FLAWLESS. i'm still learning to play this song, its the chorus that messes me up but dave makes it look so easy

  • its this and "the stone" that i have problems with for him lol

  • @kdubbsinchi Yeah man i can at least play the stone perfectly but my fingers get tied up when i try and sing along

  • dave said in an interview that even for him it's nothing more than practice at on point..

had the same problem at the beginning..and still have it with some new songs i learn or even wrtie myself..

but you'll get to this point if you just practive over and over again..

  • I can do "the stone" but this one bitchslaps me in the face :(

  • /agree

  • hey..

i agree that it takes a little practice to sing and play ths one.. but it's still one of the easier ones..and if you really

listen carefuly you'll notive that even dave has 2 or 3 timing and finger mistakes in this one.. but more in the verse than the chorus..still a great version of a great songs..

    little mistakes make songs live!

  • @agreen6489... you are an idiot. Any celebrity is nervous as hell, they just play it off well.

  • sick name dude... i got gnar flow down at x in lax bro

  • I read that Dave has great stage fright and most likely usues his odd humor to over come it.

  • my favorite song : )

  • Am I only one who wishes he Dave so I hear such beautiful lyrics I could like, "Yep, that was me!" lol

  • " I don't care if this shirt makes me look like a got tits man" hahaha

  • does anyone understand that daves just weird? sober, hes weird. stop labelling all these drugs with him. he has 3 kids. any person with sense would know to put all the bad shit down when you A.) get married B.) have children.

  • thanks! too true. He's the best guy.

  • He gets nervous and uses humor to overcome it, he's not that weird..

  • exactly he's just a funny guy. He's always nervous but he hasn't smoked anything in years. Dave's awesome and realized he can't do that stuff since he had kids. He's been clean like 4 years now.

  • @DMB41TwoStep i have video of him getting high in the eurpoe 2010 tour...soooo he yes can sometimes be a little drunk or high at times

  • @DMB41TwoStep hey nobody knows shiat except that Dave used to enjoy a few wobbly-pops on the road and some weed ,so thats just like evry person I know of in the music business.

  • @DMB41TwoStep

Haha, half the time he's just got the jitters from being in from of thousands of people!!

  • @DMB41TwoStep

Haha, half the time he's just got the jitters from being in front of thousands of people!!

  • @DMB41TwoStep .......sittin.... smoking... feeling high... are the lyrics to Crash.

  • @jeremymango sorry bro its to crush

  • @goldenmen24 ahh yeah sorry my mistake... crush is such a good song!!! so is crash!! haha DMB rocks... have you heard Angel?

  • @jeremymango ya. awesome song should be played more. but what u gona do. its there music they get to do with it what they please. but absolute favorite version is from folsom field.

  • I love hearing this version of the song...It strips away everything and takes it down to its most essential essence. It gave me a new appreciation for it, though I liked it before. Beautiful...

  • SAME! I dowloaded this whole show and I've never really listened to this song until this version either. Something about just Dave and his guitar really changes the way I hear a lot of songs. It's the same with Raven at this show. I wasn't a fan of that song either till this show.

  • Dave isn't on coke, he probably isn't even high. Its just Dave. He's nervous as it is when he's with the band. Plus, he is playing this song almost right on time, not to fast, just right. Davespeak is Davespeak for a reason, its unique everytime.

Dave said most of his songs are better off played solo by himself. He mentioned Tripping Billies was one of those songs. I think you can add this one to the list because I agree with everyone else - Never really paid attention to it till this version.

  • Are you kidding? He's clearly fucked up on something, prob just wasted. Dave doesn't get nervous, if he does he doesn't show it he's just an amazing entertainer.

  • Nah dave hasn't smoked in years once his kids were born, it's something he's proud of and says that he's been clean for 4 years now.

  • But it is always funny looking back at him being a guest on that real talk show or whatever with bill maeher. Weed always comes up when he's on.

  • AMAZING SONG!!!! the story of my life...

  • he's right tho, this song was not a favorite when i heard him play it with the band; however, solo was amazing

  • I don't care.. He is good! Great! Awesome!

  • haha dave is so blazed

  • or nervous.

  • or blazed

  • ok.

  • or both? or the one cause of the other? we'll never know for sure :D

  • Even if you're sure, you never know it all :P

  • or neither. he said during this show his daughter was backstage.

  • best night of my life

  • in this song he goes b then a weird c barre and in that he mutes the bottom 2. he plays these funky chords where you have the first 4 strings used only and the d is open and dampens the bottom two, usually with his index. not to hard once you get it down

  • i have a question.

i only really noticed it on the charlie rose the stone video.

ive been playing quitar for about 5 years, and am in a semi-established band from south carolina, i play bars every saturday evening.

    and i cant get it,

how does dave play that way?

the way he stums, like. it looks like hes hitting every string, but i hear one note, and mab a few dead ones. mab hes down picking? but im not really sure it dosnt look it from a side angle. can anybody help?

  • i think dave uses his left hand's extra fingers to mute strings he doesn't want heard.. like in stay you only hear two notes because he mutes the top ones with his other fingers,

this is my guess i don't really know. good luck!

  • It's called muting.

Matthews got it from SRV, as he mentions once.

It's also a technique employed in sweep picking/tapping to prevent open strings from ringing out and making it sound muddy.

The basics of it are easy, just keep your pick hand moving with the rhythm and let your fret hand release the notes when appropriate.

  • it's pretty invaluable to learn dave stuff. he uses that tecnique in a ton of songs

  • he mutes the strings he doesn't want heard. i like it

  • he use to boggle my mind too,but once I mastered one sound tight u get how his mind works.

  • Piece of advice.. Dont copy it. Develop your own style. The more you try, the more you imitate. He plays that way because its HIS styyle, developed over the years. Go your own way, the more you copy , the less you innovate.

  • One of the best videos I've seen posted on here. What an artist. Enjoy him while you can...

  • he's not drunk. he doesn't have tourette's. he's a quirky guy, like most musicians are. just enjoy it and laugh, he says pretty funny stuff...

  • Comment removed

  • Yes he really has tourette's and says he drinks too but stupid for people to think he can play like that shit face drunk. I play and you can't. he's got tics too. Ppl are idiots.

    Dave is amazing.

  • He does not have tourette's... what are you on crack?

  • I agee with you, this is getting so stupid.

Just let them say and think what they want.

We here that are real fans of DMB know it's not good to post this as Dave Matthews on Blow like it has been.

A fan doesn't do that. True or not. The rest is in the book to the dumbass that says congrats to you. So you're right. I have the book too.

  • I think he is intoxicated during this show.

  • david gray needs to record this song

  • is he really picking through those chords?

    amazing version

  • "Understand I am going into this with a relative amount of ....." What does he say?

  • Terror!

  • I think he says "Pipper" but who knows?

  • A relative amount of Temper.

  • terror

  • This song is AMAZING, I love it!! Sounds so different.. .. Takes you to different places inside yourself...

  • i watch this video everytime i come on youtube. i hated this song the album.

solo it makes me want to cry. very inspired. great lyrics in this one that MANY people can relate to. girls fuck over lives. haha.

  • best version of this song ever

  • I was in the crowd!!!! This was an amazing experience! It takes me back..... Wish i could be there again:)

  • love this song solo.

  • "you make a mess of me"

one of my all-time favorite DMB lyrics.

  • amen brother. me too.

  • so underated, but so amazing...great acoustic!

  • It's definatly my favorite Dave! Hey I know that sound dude! Hes in a couple of vids!

  • My favorite Dave song!!! I've grown tired of love. You are the trouble with me! Could listen to this everyday! Hey thats another dmb song!

  • I find that if you constantly do downstrokes (mute the strings when not playing a note), it helps you with the rhythm in the verse

  • what is he on? haha

  • Actually, he was sick during this show. Hence why hes sucking on a cough drop in this clip. If anything he's hopped up on cold medicine.

  • Please someone inform me as to what crazy time signature this song is in!?!?!? I can't play it because it is so weird. I think there is a change between the two riffs also? HELP!

  • haha welcome to dave matthews cover syndrome

ive learned just to listen to the song a whole lot and try to play along with it.

it helped me with warehouse and ants marching, crash into - difficult timing songs.

  • The verse is straight 4/4, it's just kinda syncopated. The chorus is 9/8 (in other words, triplets in groups of three).

  • I think its 6/8ths, just like satellite.

  • jesus

  • I like your name!

  • This is one of my fav Dave songs...this is an amazing rendition. He's the coolest, I can't wait to see him 4/20/09 in Birmingham AL.

  • yeah you can download this whole show...its a part of the 'DMBlive" series....just google DMBlive benaroya hall....or search DMBlive on any bittorrent site

  • any1 know where i can download this version of the song

  • ease up...damn.

  • "I dont care that this shirt makes me look like i tits". HAHAHHA fucking AWESOME

  • a relative amount of.. tipper??? is that what he said? what does that even mean?

  • it means trepidation/worry

  • pipper, it's a british english word; hard to directly translate but the feelings it conveys are easily gathered from the rest of what he said I think.

dont hurt yourself thinking about it...

  • not a favorite ??? dave dont underestimate your fans we love you

  • He makes it look so easy.

  • this man rules the acoustic guitar

  • I thoroughly agree. I wish I could mute strings and just strum like he does. Then I could play a lot more licks while singing. It's too hard to keep track of both rhythms at the same time, but his style works perfectly. He is the master at that.

  • The riff is from the "police"

  • oh is it? what song? i'd love to hear it :)

  • i don't think the riff is from the police but it sounds similar to message in a bottle. many people have talked about that before.

  • I would much rather have this song then listen to the police repeat the phrase "message in a bottle" for twenty minutes.

  • dave wrote like the whole album lyircs and guitar licks in like a week...considering the time line, i think he did pretty good...you got the space between, so right, if I had it all, what you are, fool to think, mother father, sleep to drream her, all great tunes....when the world ends is killer too.

  • Love this song btw.

  • awesome solo!

  • Dave is a legend. His songwriting skills and the messages he portrays is sheer brilliance. I am in awe.

  • Lets all agree that this is awesome and really everything that dmb and or dave himself makes is awesome, the only reason why busted stuff was a let down for many (not me personally) was the band was not into it at the time and a lot of feet were stepped on because this album was solely between dave and the producer and then the band was added in after with really not much input. That said the band is working closely together for this new album hopefully it won't be a lws

    pce and love

  • is this in standard tuning?

  • Yes it is;)

  • such an awesome song

  • Idk what's the thing against busted stuff, I really like that cd with grey street, you never know, bartender, raven, where are you going, CAPTAIN!!!!

  • captain live at the gorge is amazing.

  • Better album: EVERYDAY or STAND UP?

  • why say better? it's fuckin art man...

  • Everyday by a mile....in my opinion of course

  • all i gotta say is that the newsest album in 2008 is probably going to BLOW all of our minds...you think that D
