  • Wanna buy a farm? ^__^

  • Where would we all be if it wasn't for all the hard work and scarifies made by farmers and their families ?

  • ps love this song digs right into my roots cheers all

  • weve had the the same problem here in australia, choose the big chain or resort to market value ,alls depending on what you grow or harvest plenty of good airable land and black soil- dirt cheap good solid investment- farmers defintly worth a look see you own the land here not the government or banks i spose its what you make of it cheers shaun mangrove mt nsw australia

  • grew up on 170acres with Great Uncle, it all was taken-away!! atleast I have good memories of the best years of my youth!!! Milatary ran thru our blood, like water thru the soil. Now our government saccrificies our boys and girls for OIL!!!!!

  • If you ate today, thank a farmer and also thank a soldier because it's the right thing to do.

  • whyd you vote for obama? that ruines everything you stand for john mellencamp

  • many large "family farms" are long gone. today, most farms are owned by large corporations.

  • the end is here

  • I'll buy your farm

  • that sounds like australia as well!

  • In my opinion Scarecrow is John Mellencamp best album! I love all the songs on this album!

  • Man, this song has awesome drums... Kenny Aronoff is a mind-numbingly good drummer...

  • Never realized there was a stand up bass in this song.

  • It's all about the big corporations. They want to take over our food, and water. Agenda; to drive the farmer who's had their land past down from generation to generation, and worked their ass off just fade away. Big money talks. Us little people are just a thorn in their side. We keep letting this go on, not just with the farmers but in all aspects of our life we'll be f**ked. No turning back...it'll be too late! America as I knew, and loved it while growing up is fading fast.

  • A great tribute to the small family farmers, not the soulless megacorporations --without them, we're all dead

  • In Australia We Have A Saying,

    EVERY FAMILY NEEDS A FARMER!

Farmers are the life blood of our countries, not those pencil pushers sitting in offices all day long.

Look after our Farmers or we are F***ED!!!!

  • Farming is a key competency we need in this country - we need to be able to feed ourselves and how wonderful if we can help to feed the world. I don't pretend to understand all the embargo's and price props. Perhaps we can let that stuff go wth a guaranteed income and let farmer's grow what is in demand. Just a thought.

  • 0:38

  • Its the fisherman of the gulf that feel the pain of the farmer now thanks BP OIL Karma will be HELL for you

  • Corporations run this world , and when they deplete it, we shall inherite the earth !!

  • @tgigunner yeah if there's anything LEFT

  • I love John Mellencamp!!

  • farmers will get more to leave the crops then to sell them to processers

  • can people stop ranting about their grandpappy's farms and just listen to the song?

  • @Tonycpope

Are you that shocked that people who feel attached to the land would post here?

  • i have a family farm near st. louis missouri and we have quie a bit of land with lots of horses cows a couple corn fields and not much else besides a collection of antique john deere's and my uncle clifford thats his actuall name died a couple years ago and he was the one who took care of the farm but now my cousin shean and uncle anthony now take care of it just makes me sad that we may lose it unless the economy gets better.

  • My great grandparents were farmers during their entire lives near Waldron, Indiana, in Shelby County, not terribly far away from where Mr. John Mellencamp grew up. I was lucky enough to get to know my great grandparents before they passed on, and to hear them talk about times past. They never had much of anything in a material sense, but they had the farm, and they had each other and their family and friends, and most of all, they all had their simple and strong religeous faith.

  • Just goes to show that the politicians haven't changed one bit since this song was wrote. Now they are helping other countries become agriculturial giants to take money from the farmers. It was bad enough when they started shipping all other types of jobs across seas. God Bless Us when we are a third world country!!

  • I respect the farmer....I have great respect for anyone that works and is passionate in what they do. My hat's off to the working people in this country that provide us with those things essential to life-like food. Working folks and middle class citizens are getting crushed. Corporate fat-cats and greedy special interests are picking our bones clean! It's an ideology of exploitation to these people; they just want us to live like feudal serfs. Them rich and we destitute.

    ENOUGH is ENOUGH !

  • Am from Aussieland and we have the same problems here .......so things are not much different.........am thinking of you guys.......Neil

  • It's shame what is happening out there now-a-days .. .Ever heard of Monserno? They for example own 98% of the soybeans used in production, meaning they have a Patent on that particular Genitically Modified seed and 98% of farmers use that seed, if monserno finds out you have been using their seed, they WILL sue you, they have agents in the field looking for unlicensed users of their crop, sad part is they can sue you EVEN if you didn't know you have Monserno beans, if your neighbor has the seeds

  • and they cross-polinate into your field, Monserno will sue you, Monserno has "agents' in the field. The FDA who is supposed to monitor the food industry is ran by the food industry, for example the FDA is run by Purdue, Con Agra and Monserno. Farmers have it rough these days... Most food you eat here in America all belongs to just a handfulof comapanies, Con Agra, Monserno and Perdue.... If only most Americans knew what actually happens to their food before they eat itOne Hamburger has 4000 cows

  • And these big name corporations put alot of strain on the farmers; for example they promote the mistreatment of animals and unsanitary practices to cut costs, unfortunately if a farmer doesnt agree with what the Company wants them to do and if the farmer doesnt take out a loan to upgrade their equipment they will lose their contract and not be able to put food on their own table ... I know it's more expensive but go Organic people, we have the power to change the system. The FDA is corrupt!

  • Correction; It's Monsanto not Monserno .... Now I'm gonna get sued :/

  • @FuzzyMonstar i think your mistaken. we grow corn and soybeans for a company called Heritage seeds which is owned by Monsanto and they have never approached us about doing anything that you mentioned below. I also have worked for Monsanto and they do not have "agents" that check fields for their soybeans. They're checking for disease and pests that could be detrimental to the crop.

  • we need help serious help as the future of america we need help now

  • happy earth day.

  • i love every song john sings

  • damn you people whinge ... ALL Farmers KNOW what they are in for when they start... we ALL feed a Nation.. whatever that Nation be.... Septics like to have a whinge more than most I have found.. wake up and see it for what it is.... Farmers have a choice to stay or go

don't or CAN'T handle it then sell off and move on...

    Love to the REALFarmers <3

  • The farmers around here were clamoring for subsidies just a little while ago, riffing on all kinds of populism. No one's innocent any more, unfortunately.

  • hahahahahahahahahaha

  • "Hey callin' it your job 'ol hoss

    Sho' don't make it right

But if you want me to I'll say a prayer

    For your soul tonight"

STICK IT TO'EM JOHN!!!!! One of the best songs he ever wrote!

  • Farmers KICK ASS !!!

  • This hard work builds a nation what have you fools contributed.

  • the guy on the right looks like bubbles with a beard :D from trailer park boys

  • @andreacanadian Holy smokes, it is Bubbes! I guess the one in the middle's Ricky, lol. I wonder where his go cart and shopping carts were?

  • you fools ,what have you contributed?

  • @VasbytSA I suspect you don't understand the reference. By the way, I remember the hard time American farmers had in the 80s, but lighten up, dude!

  • @vasbytSA I also suspect that you might not understand as the trailer park boys is a television program in Canada was not making fun at the plight of the American farmer just giggled at the sight of someone who looked like bubbles a character from the show The Trailer Park Boys

  • I'm so disasppointed that the Bubbles-look-alike didn't speak. Maybe he was too worried about his kitties to talk.

  • it would be interesting to see this video remade in the same town and farmland and see how much it has changed in the last 25 years and see what the farms look like now.

  • it is true! The Gov. don't help the Farmers at all! It is hard work and they should have the help they need!

  • FORGET THE GOVERNMENT! Changes comes from the people. STOP shopping at Wal-Mart and Costco! Buy local, buy smart! Save our farms and our food, cuz China will eventually starve and kill the US.

  • I agree! The Gov only helps the rich! We have to help ourselves! Pull together with everything. People should boycott Walmart and Costco, Sam's Club? but I am afraid thet people will still go there! There aren't many Mom and Pop stores anymore. they are being taken over by the Big Stores! Sad!

  • Watch the following:

    1. Food, Inc.

    2. King Corn

  • If anyone has anything bad to say about farmers. Make sure your mouth isn't full of food.

  • Farmers are the best because of them we are still alive! man.. now i feel like helping them!!

  • Easily John's saddest and deepest song EVER..............and the shot of "97 crosses planted in the courthouse yard" gives me chills every time.

  • For a great expose of the Cap & Trade, which Gore & his Goldman Sachs shysters are set up to cash in on

    Input youtube

"The Huge Mistake Climate Change Solutions 2009"

Help stop the Carbon tax fraud, call your Government Rep & say "NO" to Cap & Trade!

  • Watch the guy on the left in the beginning, in the purple shirt, his face stays exactly the same the entire time, he doesnt move

  • They can bail out the shyster bankers with our tax dollars, but not our farmers, many of whom had that land for multiple generations?

How did we let this happen?

We need a change, a REAL change, not more lawyers & corporate robotoids as our representatives, but farmers, workers, middleclass & working class people in Congress.

Start running ourselves as Democrats Or Republicans, take the parties back from the money lobbies that control them both now

A new America, an idea whose time has come

  • @Thisawareness but not the famers no shit, no shit!

  • @Thisawareness they know where the big money is at for their champanes. thats why they help the banks and the big buissnesses. you are right, we have to take our country's government back by voting those people out.

  • @M16AR15dude Ty for the support. I am of the opinion since both parties seemed to be "captured" by the corporations we need to run ourselves as Independant Democrats and Republicans and challenge the incumbent shills in the primaries.

Third parties never do well, ballot placement is the key. So if you have a 1 on1 primary, you'll get slot B, great chance to unseat the hack

  • @Thisawareness ver well said. I would like to see more middle class people run. farmers, teachers, pollice officers. to many people just dont know or just dont care about whats around them. maybe one day they will.

  • @Thisawareness Its not the party, it is who their constituency is. Far as I can tell, right now 80% of DC represents Wall St bankers, insurance companies, Big Pharma and any other BIG money operation. If you sent your candidate your life savings, it would get you no more chance to be heard than if you didn't give shit. Now that corporations are people and have no cap on how much they can give to a candidate, look out, the matching gates of Greed and No Forethought are bout to be thrown open.

  • @Thisawareness - The Government killed the American Farmer when they outlawed the World's first Billion-Dollar Crop in 1937.

  • @Thisawareness What you posted, I am with you all the way on your opinion. What is even worse is the fact that burns my ass is going all these billion dollars away to other is giving all the forgien aid all around the world with money that has to be borrowed from communist china and Japan owns most of our banks, while people in our country go homeless and have no food in the bellies. There should be no money handed out around the world and take care of our own first.

  • @toogonejohn2

true that my fellow brother shaun australia

  • cbindiana...thank God !

  • Comment removed

  • Alot of politicians and representatives used to come from the working class...not no more! Just bought and paid for rich boys and attorneys (fuckn thieves), hope I live to see the day of reckoning. It may just very well be on its way =).

  • What people do not see is the over all picture. More loans=higher debt higher debt=more obligation more obligation=more contorl. As it ise big food corps OWN farms and can easily poison everyone. the eighties farm era is a move to gain control.

  • Its sad what politicials do....I think most of them must be from the city....City of Sin....Capitol Hill!!

They will reap what they sew....we are seeing this...What goes around comes around....

    God Bless Us All.....

  • Stand 4 the strong, stand 4 the farmers and ranchers

  • I swear to god, Johnny Cash and John Mellencamp are like the only country artists I like...maybe cuz their music is so meaningful and haunting in a way. I remember listening to this song on loop when I was like 6 years old, I had no idea what it meant then, but now I know. Really sucked to be a farmer then, and really sucks to be a farmer now. Wish there was something I could do...

  • @Collegejew629 Mellencamp country? I beg to differ.

  • love this song haha the kid climb of the fence on the dack of this album looks just like me when i was little haha

  • Thanks aarontherose. It is just so sad to see this kind of thing happening. Thanks to Walmart and urban sprawl our farms and dirt roads are disappearing. Every place has a history. One day there will be no more pretty pictures to take...it will just be shopping centers and cheap suburban homes. My ancestors would be so disappointed if they could see the world we live in now..Shame, shame, shame.

  • "Rain on the Scarecrow, blood on the plow."

  • it takes place in Seymour, Indiana/Jackson County

  • what town does this video take place?

  • Oh this shit just pisses me OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's nothing I can say that he didn't say in this song............callin it your job sure don't make it right. He has his FFA jacket on in this video.. Future Farmers of America....Good Lord.....that's sad.... there's no future in a farmer anymore. They have torn up kentucky and indiana. they took my grandparents farm. ... this land made me so proud.....thank you John for taking up for us and trying to explain it.......those fuckers.

  • It's not just your part of the world

conniebky. The developers have taken out tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland here in AZ. The government is squeezing us with regulations and environmental issues are killing us.

At the rate it's going my children are probably going to see us largely dependent on foreign food.

The family farmer is a rapidly dying breed and so many people either don't care or are completely unaware of it.

  • GOD LOVE THE FARMER

  • Great song. i bought this 45 when this song first came out. Its probably my favourite song by John Mellencamp

  • First Mellencamp video to capture the love and seriousness Mr Mellencamp has in his heart for the American people and their troubles! Notice the dust in the air at the very end of the video. Represents what actually happened.

  • wonder if the farmers at the start of the video are still in business? does anyone know?

  • @kinze2000 good question, but no one cares which is a shame. Thats what wrong with this world. Mellencamp does a great job though.

  • yes - the farmers in the video still farm. They live on the other side of Seymour from where I farm.

  • @cbindiana That's pretty cool! I have always wondered if these guys are still farming.

  • Crawford County Indiana FFA member hopefully this mess will get better

  • Jefferson County too

  • I hear ya man.

  • your from crawford county in. im from carroll county indiana and are ag and shop has changed alot we have a new teacher

  • for better or worse? we have a great teacher.

  • The next time you see a farmer selling produce on the side of the road stop and buy something from them.

  • none of this is here anymore

  • i live in union mills 1150 south

  • I think this video shows how the need for single payer health insurance. If Walmart had to pay for their labor like the rest of America, it would definatly help Americans. The Walmart Complex is the single most hurtful thing to labor. It needs to end. I was born in Illinois and this song is from when things were good....

  • @aufer21 If Walmart had to pay more for labor the price of everything in the store would have to increase. Don't you see that nothing is free?

  • mass respect to the working man

  • death to ahole cheap governments

  • This song makes me think about where I come from, Northwest Ohio. Nothing but farm country and hardworking people. God Bless Farmers!!!

  • God bless the farmers! This video makes me cry because I think of my grandpa and how simple and honest he was. Really miss him.

  • governments rule corporations and corporations buy up the small players to compete in the corperate world.. in doing this they are destroying the family / community values and creating a bigger city. obviously country people arnt very important any more.

  • I have paid extra money for local produce before. I am not for just giving my money to big corporate farms. Plus, a lot of the food not grown by local farmers has like no taste. Buy local stuff!

  • the way they talk then is the way it is now two months ago i was only gettin 10.50 per hundred lbs. of milk but corn is yieldin good this year

  • If we don't support the farmers in this country - where will the food come from... Makes you think..

  • love this song reminds me of myself

  • My papaw always told me "Never cuss a farmer with your mouth full."

  • I'll marry a farmer anyday. they solid hard workin men

  • The farmers are the life of this country. GOD BLESS THEM

  • As of quitting time this afternoon we close down our farm.

A lifetime of hard work, a way of life and 3 good men that have been with us since the beginning are gone .

    It's like death.

  • Everyone should truly read the lyrics to this song and if you ever have a chance to get to know anybody from the midwestern farmtowns you come to realize that these are the people that hold this country together. Not the people that are spending all their time gambling, watching porn or hanging out in the bars. It's the people like this that value family and never letting anything get in the way of that.

  • amazing song love it!

  • A true American and musician. Has a real heart and plenty of soul. I know you feel it.

  • this dude is one solid soul...

tells it like it is..he's the real deal....yep..

  • now that is heavy.

  • i have always loved this song too - i grew up on a farm and so much of it is right to the heart - even tho I didn't have a great love for the farm it was still home and could have been my Dads legacy to my brother.

  • I always loved this song. I grew up on his music. I love it.. Very talented!

  • this should be the FFA theme song

  • God Bless the farmers.

  • To the farmers of America, my hat's off to you...how does one get the energy to work the land for very little money and a lot of grief in return..I'm a suburbanite, and I have to push myself just to cut the lawn every week. My thoughts are with you.

  • Crosses to farmers and to Laramie Wyoming.....hate and greed will be our demise!!

  • Next to the farmers and truckers.. I know of no other men/women who work harder...for peanuts.....Long hours for minimal profit....if anything....Sad!! Damn Sad!!

  • All the corporate farmers care about is profit.

  • I grew up on a farm in Ontario Canada. My dad was a farmer and my grandfather was a farmer. The real farmers are being kicked out by corporate farmers that do not care about the land or the animals.

  • me 2 buddie

  • every time i hear this song i get an eerie feeling.. gives me chills.. love the song tho!

  • he played farm aid here in st louis last month and i am still kicking myself for not going, shit! :(

  • i live in Indiana...there are alot of small farms gone...swallode by the almighty big business. It's a tragedy, the biggest farmer in Indiana is a New York business man....it's a bunch of bull

  • Superb song, like so much that he has done.

Shame that he is only remembered by most folk for Jack and Diane

  • Our farmers, just like our military, represent the true backbone of this nation.

  • this song never gets old as does small town 2 that I love

  • God Bless Our Farmers.

  • Well, when Codex Alimentarius is passed Monsanto will own all the farms. Get on them America. Dead food for America - that's their Plan.

  • anyone that knocks any farmer has his or her head up their ass. grow up . probably a thirteen year old kid typing shit

  • loser

  • My family lost there farm back in Manitoba this song is so True.

  • u don't think of canada much when u envision farms, at least down here we don't, but i guess good land don't stop at the border :)

  • manitoba to alberta had the best farm land. we had familys from Montana coming up here to farm. We have more farm land then the USA so we should work together to save are Bread and Butter we all need the farmers

  • I absolutely love this song, my family has farmed the same land in Illinois since 1811, we've been through ALL of the hard times, hang tough boys, there may just be another one comin.

  • Where at in illinois? I'm from west central ill my self...Pike county to be exact!

  • Im from Shelby county, Shelbyville to be exact.......you boys got some big ole deer over there!

  • I used to live in Mattoon ILL

    Rick

  • Just wanted to thank Mr. Mellencamp to bring to light just a small part of the Ag Industry in California and the rest of the USA.....My daughter is an Ag Ed major...we hope she will have a job..

  • hell yea go farmers "we put food on your table" people complain about farmers they should shut up cuz wheres there food comin from"

  • dumb jackasses

  • dogcrapgreen, you ever work 15 hrs a day,7 days aweek, sleep for 3hrs, for 10 months, then get 2 months to work on shit you drove for 10 months?

  • It doesn't matter where you live whether it is in the U.S.A. or Canada farming is in dire straits, people remember, no farms no food!

  • Love this song. My family farmed the same land since the 1860's. Not enough money in it. Now I'm in the Army. Ain't life a bitch.

  • Absolutley Love the 1st 1:15 of this video

  • say no to corporate farming !!

  • If RATM did country they would do this song

  • go Michigan

  • greetins from the hoosier state

  • sz3rd:

please think of this song when ya buy food not from the USA...

  • IMO John Mellencamp is probably the greatest American songwriter of the 20th century... He cuts right to the quick with this song...

  • oh yeah theycouldance! saw them in july . tha girl on the violin was the shit.

  • Strong words YES GOOD INTENTIONS....BUT WHEN WILL WE PUT AN END TO THIS CORPORATE GREED WITHIN OUR GOVERNMENT ? HOW LONG AGO WAS THIS SONG WRITTEN, & NOTHING HAS CHANGED, THINGS HAVE GOTTEN WORSE....WASHINGTON SHOULD BE BURNT TO THE GROUND TO RID OUR WORLD OF THIS CORRUPT, EVIL TAKEOVER OF OUR ONCE GREAT NATION. WE HAVE PROTESTED, LIVES LOST, USED PEACEFUL TACTICS, THIS IS NOT WORKING THEY SCOFF AT LOGIC. GOD BLESS AND HELP WE THE PEOPLE DECLARE OUR FREEDOMS ONCE AGAIN NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES !

  • Right on I do dig your words, blessings & peace

  • Please don't criticize North American farmers. At least not with your mouth full. It's damn rude. By and large, these people are the kind you'd LOVE to have as neighbors.

  • Saw John on his tour with Willie and Dylan. When he did this song the energy was so strong I felt like I could spit fire, and fly.

  • This was when I figured that John had inherited some of Woody Guthrie's chops. Listen to these words and I challenge you not to at least get a lump in your throat.

  • Farmers get a lot of subsidies. Perhaps they are complaining about "small" farmers not getting any. Thank big biz lobbyists.

  • my grandpa had 2 other brothers besides him that went into farming he was the only one that survived the 80's but just bearly its sad to see a family farm disappear im 14 and it makes me sad to see a farmer retire and his farm and grove get leveled into a new farm its just not right for so many memorys and heritage to disapear i hope i can make it trough the next 50 years with our family farm

  • PArt of my family tried farming at one time. In fact, had my hand in it til recently. Just an Update from another 14 year old.

    Farmer/retired

  • hey man i see where ur comin from..im 14 to. im the same way, my grandpa barley made to through the 80s too. same lets hope we can make in another 50 years too, ya just dont know when a farming crisis will come again,.

  • Backbone of America, hard working people have my utmost respect!!

  • love this song god bless us farmers who work hard for hardly anything...(the republicans and democrats have both made mistakes) but america is becoming socialized...

  • I love John. But where are the celebs for the farmers in California? I guess because then they would be going up against the enviromentalist's whacko's,and its not cool to speak out agaisnt them. messed fricken up!!
