Okay...I love the book and I like most of the film adaptations. And, believe it or not, I liked this. Granted it's very loosely based on the novel, but it was still fun to watch.

Though to be honest, I thought this would make a better video game than a movie.

But give the director credit for trying to incorporate elements of steampunk into a classic.

Looks like "Pirates of the Caribbean" meets "Stardust" for a crazy fantasy epic with tiny bits of history flakes sprinkled on top. No gravity, impossible moves, insane strength... aah, Hollywood... :D The stuntmen and CG have taken over! This doesn't resemble the book ..at all... but it looks a lot better than the 1993 Disney version.

If you are basing your criticism on this film not being the original story, then go back and look at the actual history. Alexandre Dumas wrote 3 novels about the Musketeers in 1844 based on a book printed by Pierre Rouge, written by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras. The adventure was supposed to continue. Eugène d'Auriac wrote d'Artagnan's biography in 1847. Adding Victorian Science Fiction today is perfectly acceptable, and quite brilliant.

I'm not judging this movie not being based on the book. But it's clearly supposed to be. It starts with D'Artagnon wanting to join the musketeers. Milady de Winter is still alive, despite having been executed in the book. The story may continue, but that isn't an argument for this movie which is clearly (loosely) based on the original part of the story, which didn't involve Victorian science etc.

Having said that, it looks to be alright, so I'm not saying it's bad, just wrong.

Like many movies before it, this one will be dated to the time of "Pirates of the Caribbean" etc. but Dumas's work will also remain as it is. I hope you can enjoy both for what they are worth.
