Joel Hodgson himself built the first puppets by himself the night before they filmed the pilot, and he had to use the cheapest materials he could find for the design...and in Servo's case that meant an actual gumball dispenser. Even later when they built better robot puppets, they kept the original design because the low-budget look became a trademark of the show.

There's a moment when the bots are so upset by a movie that they doubt the existence of God. I find Joel's reassurance oddly sweet, like a father comforting his children. It has an "It's all right, Daddy's here" quality I like. I always felt a warm fondness for Joel after seeing that. 

Which one was it ... Being From Another Planet? The bots are ranting that it's the worst movie they ever had to watch, worse than Manos, worse than...Eegah? Only saw it once, many years ago.

Joel IS a father to Tom Servo, Crow, and Gypsy, because he created them and taught them about life. As for Mike, I think that Mike is like a best friend or uncle to the Bots as well as being a dimwitted victim of their pranks.
