@derblauereiter92 Of course atheists believe in something. In a lot of things: love, loyalty, charity. Just not in supernatural things. Atheism isn't a believe, it's a word that expresses the state of their not being religious.
love, charity loyalty all come from the supernatural nature of man. The atheist is suffering of amnesia. He forgot his own spiritual nature. In this, we are all atheists.
@HubertTheBeardless A spiritual nature is not dependent on supernatural stuff. One can very well be spiritual and believe in love, charity and loyalty, without believing in fairytales and a man on a cloud (with or without a beard);-)
Yes it is. Spirituality is not about fairytales and old men sitting on clouds as you make it to be. Philosophy, arts, science they are all spiritual activities.
@HubertTheBeardless You were linking spirituality to religion, not me ("The atheist is suffering of amnesia. He forgot his own spiritual nature"). My whole point was that one can be an atheïst and be spiritual at the same time. Exactly what you are saying now.
@Yrrats This media is not really suitable for a thourough conversation. But I will still try to bring a few arguments.
I identified any activity what involves thinking as spiritual activities. It does not have to do anything with God, or religion. I say, that thinking in itself is spiritual, and thus, supra-sensible. Thinking can be only percieved by itself. Thus it has a realm of its own, the spiritual realm.
Melodia sublime.
@HollandSama Religion doesnt bring beautiful art into our world, people do. Whether they are inspired by religion or anything else is besides the point.
@Oegaboega12 I politely disagree with you. People need to be inspired to write beautifully, and Christianity has been a good source of inspiration, (though it didn't make music by itself, like you point out). Without inspiration, whether by love, religion, the glory of life, etc., people don't make beautiful art. The quality and source of inspiration make a difference in what is produced. That's not besides the point.
@HollandSama this is a truly remarkable statement from someone with a great character. If we all thought like you, the world would be a haven of peace. Thanks!
@avginkel I'm glad you could see what I meant. My driving thought was to bring a moment of peaceful compromise to the discussion. Thank you for the kind response!
Neither did they you; God did. Atheism is not a rational religion because the impossible is presumed: infinite self-knowledge sufficient to exclude ANY possibility of God ANYWHERE. The myths of agnosticism and antitheism are ultimately really usually dishonest misotheism (= hatred of God (and often self)), due to vain ego and thus pride with some bad experience(s) not truly processed. Been there, done that. May God open our eyes. See "Don't Waste Your Life" desiringGod. org
@KnightsHospitallerBC You cannot project politics/ warfare onto religion. It's like saying all Christians are crusaders or all Muslims are terrorists. As Christians we believe that our religion is the right religion. But you have to understand that other people feel the same way about their religion or their belief that there is no god. Stalin, Hitler and Mao were atheists, but not every atheist is a dictator or muderer.
@HollandSama I couldn't agree with you more. And let's not forget this fact because Bach and his beautiful music are the reasons why we're all here viewing this video, not religion, or a lack there of.
@HollandSama Well, the church was kind of the only place a budding composer could get any work back then, so of course they wrote what their patrons wanted. The fact is we'll never know if they hadn't written just as beautiful music had they had secular employers.
@HollandSama Religion has nothing to do with it. Bach lived on the 18th century and to make sacred music was at that time the best way to make a living for a musician. Especially on the Lutheran Church, which cared a lot for music. If he would have lived in a different time period or area, he would have made probably some operas or film music. But the reason why his music is so beautiful, is simply because he was an unbelievable musical genius.
@HollandSama I think Bach was a musical genius and that fact had nothing to do with his religion. It was just normal to be religious in those times. Maybe if he was born in the 70s or 80s he would've been an atheist - who knows.
@mytownsanbon It´s not religion, it´s God expressing trough Bach. His gift was being such a wonderful instrument of His supreme beautiful.
Some atheist can express god's will better than religious people. It's just a shame knowing what is the way to bliss and not following.
I think I know my way, but major setbacks made me doubt about that. I am very shaken right now, but i have faith the He knows what it is better to me. And listening to His musical expression really helps me.
musica maravilhosa, pra mim oque diferencia J.S.
Music has no confession! The routes of Bachs music were the churchmusic of the middleage, and even if Bach was a lutherian, he would never had spoken bad about other christians. Its people who claim art for their `culture´ who made me sick! Bach joined the italian and the french style to the german style of music and this interpretation of english musicians would have made him very proud!
J.S. Bach always gave the glory to GOD (soli deo gloria!). The title of this song says: "Jesus continues being the reason of my joy." Jesus is the son of God and principal point of cristianism, not Mary. A christian adores Jesus, not Mary.

Except, of course, for those who tend to focus on their personal thorns instead of the roses.
Thanks for the interesting slide show with annotations! I've been to the St. Thomas Church and it was very special to stand in the place where Bach had been working a few centuries in the past.
I´m from germany and I´m glad every christmas comes something from Bach on TV! I can´t understand why Bach was so busy in writing music because he had such a hard life and his music wasn´t recognized the time he lived?
Well friend, I think he was so busy writing music because it was his profession and he loved it . However, I sincerely believe that his more dear and deeper reason was I loved his friend Jesus so much, as this piece and so many other show us... =)
What exactly is "Jesus bleibet meine Freude" the name of? Is it the name of the Cantata? What do you call it if you remove the choir? Because I heard a clip with the same music and about the same length but without the chorus. What do you call that?... a Chorale without the choir??...
here i am, someone who is into rap, hip hop, and all the popular music of the day. i have to say, nothing I've heard is this beautiful :) I love catholic classics ESPECIALLY when a choir sings along. A M A Z I N G
@purplypassion Actually, Bach was a devout Lutheran, but I think you have said something important. This music is timeless. I think anybody can enjoy it.
i love this song, i'm also a fan of death, black and thrash/speed metal, and every time i listen to this i cry, honestly this is the most beautiful song iv'e ever heard.
@possessed128 I also hear metal etc. The first time i laught beacause you sad you always cry everytime you listen to this beatiful song. But finally I know what you mean because the same happend to me.
@FlameOfAnor17 There are too much reasons to list them in a YT-comment. But it's not only Christianity. All religions are awful in my mind. I'm an atheistic person who loves to read Zarathustra instead of the bible. ;)
@ricardofolive And religious people don't do so? ;) Think about Mideast conflict or crusaders. And I have no problem with people who believe something, if it isn't in a religious or radical way.
@ricardofolive As an atheist, I find your comment incredibly ignorant. I can't think of a single atheist who wants to *force* anyone to abandon their beliefs or faith. Now, I think it'd be nice if more people voluntarily chose to abandon faith, since I consider faith to be irrational and often detrimental -- but I will certainly defend people's right to have that faith.
To put it simply, I'd like to convince people that faith is unjustified; I'd never consider forcing that view on anyone.
@VetaeirYeln You don´t know, but I know many. I received lots of e-mails from atheists asking me to put my faith in the garbagge. However, I never asked this to an atheist. Indeed I find your comment also incredibly ignorant: It is not because you've never seen a fact that thisis not true. And I had to ask him personally: please stop sending me these kind of emails. To put it simple: live and let live. Be an atheist and let those who do not want to be atheists live their faith
@Ki12B . On atheism, each person must live in accordance with his or her beliefs, and only time can tell who is right or wrong. No one but God owns the truth. I am a Christian.
@walttermsilva don't you think that it's silly to say there would be one big truth? :) It doesn't matter if you are religious, but you should think critical and many-sided instead of following things that you've just heard. To say that there would be things like "good" and "evil" or the one and only "truth" we call in my country "thinking with drawers". Just think about it.
Thank your for that nice piece with the great Kings College Choir.
The pics are nice to with all the towns Bach lived. He had such a miserable life in Leipzig and is now so honored. I don´t know if he would please that his grave in the St. Thomas Church now....
But the best is, 2012 the Kings College Choir will have a concert there for 800th anniversary of the Thomanerchor (St. Thomas Church Boys Choir) in Leipzig.
Unfortunate that it is translated into English as "Jesus, joy of man's desiring". The German original, "Jesu, Thou are my joy", speaks of a passionate relationship that exists now, not some remote hope that may come to pass in the future. A reminder that Bach, who as a young man walked some 400 miles to hear Buxtehude play, was of flesh and blood, and wrote of his faith in music that has set the standard for artistic expression forever.
12 people disliked this because they cried and cried that they wet the keyboard of their computer, their eyes were all sore and blurry, or for some men they hate crying coz they think it's not manly
@ilkinond of course the Lord Jesus Christ our Lord and God our Father - and Christ with Bach and Bach (through Jesum Christ) with Christ - for us - see Romans 8!

1) Vernunft
2) Fähigkeit zum Schaffen
3) Glauben (an irgendwas)

@purplypassion Actually, Bach was a devout Lutheran, but I think you have said something important. This music is timeless. I think anybody can enjoy it.

@Ki12B Why don't you like Christianity?
FlameOfAnor17 3 months ago
@FlameOfAnor17 There are too much reasons to list them in a YT-comment. But it's not only Christianity. All religions are awful in my mind. I'm an atheistic person who loves to read Zarathustra instead of the bible. ;)

@Ki12B Atheists are boring and annoying people who want to force all other men to abandon their beliefs and faith.
ricardofolive 3 months ago 8
@ricardofolive And religious people don't do so? ;) Think about Mideast conflict or crusaders. And I have no problem with people who believe something, if it isn't in a religious or radical way.
Ki12B 3 months ago
@ricardofolive As an atheist, I find your comment incredibly ignorant. I can't think of a single atheist who wants to *force* anyone to abandon their beliefs or faith. Now, I think it'd be nice if more people voluntarily chose to abandon faith, since I consider faith to be irrational and often detrimental -- but I will certainly defend people's right to have that faith.
To put it simply, I'd like to convince people that faith is unjustified; I'd never consider forcing that view on anyone.
VetaeirYeln 3 months ago
@VetaeirYeln You don´t know, but I know many. I received lots of e-mails from atheists asking me to put my faith in the garbagge. However, I never asked this to an atheist. Indeed I find your comment also incredibly ignorant: It is not because you've never seen a fact that thisis not true. And I had to ask him personally: please stop sending me these kind of emails. To put it simple: live and let live. Be an atheist and let those who do not want to be atheists live their faith
ricardofolive 3 months ago 4
@ricardofolive Thanks God only two percent of people on Earth are atheists, but I think they must be respected like anyone else.

Tradução do original alemão desta música, apud ‘ENGLISH (original)’
PORTUGUESE
“Jesus sempre será minha alegria,
O consolo do meu coração e essência,
Jesus está presente em todo sofrimento,
Ele é a força da minha vida,
O desejo e a luz dos meus olhos,
O tesouro da minha alma e felicidade;
Por isso jamais deixarei Jesus sair,
Nem do meu coração e nem do meu rosto.”

@Ki12B . On atheism, each person must live in accordance with his or her beliefs, and only time can tell who is right or wrong. No one but God owns the truth. I am a Christian.
walttermsilva 3 months ago
@walttermsilva don't you think that it's silly to say there would be one big truth? :) It doesn't matter if you are religious, but you should think critical and many-sided instead of following things that you've just heard. To say that there would be things like "good" and "evil" or the one and only "truth" we call in my country "thinking with drawers". Just think about it.
Ki12B 3 months ago
@Ki12B Ok, I respect your point of view. Thank you for your comment.

Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
Darum lass ich Jesum nicht
