yes they were fearful of all that they did not understand including the language and the way they worship. these religions were also influenced by christianity but for the most part remained largely influenced by various african tradidtions. voodoo is native to haiti and obeah to jamaica. other african influed religions exist in the caribbean namely shango and pocomania. revivalism is about half christian and half african influence.

There's nothing wrong with what she is saying other that practitioners of Vodou also believe in a Supreme Being (in fact the same God Christians believe in) and they do not sacrifice to demons. They feed spirits who represent a relationship with the natural world. It is similar to Santeria or Lucumi in some sense and as ties to Catholic saint worship.
