  • I would love to have a look at this sometime. Just curious, are the mallet changes notated in the score or are they just a personal choice?

  • i was told being able to use 3 mallets was a complete waste. (thats how many i use.) you just proved him wrong. and your 2 mallet work is very impressive.

  • Bravisimo. I love your manner to play, really professional. You are the best.

  • Nice one Peter!! Derek Gleeson

  • Hallo Peter,

Ik heb het stuk al een paar keer beluisterd, erg goed uitgevoerd en mooie compositie ook.

    Vriendelijke groet Johan

  • Vibra-Elufa is an adaption from Friday from Light. The melodies are a combination and intermodulation of the Luzifer-melody and Eva-melody. On which this beautiful opera is based. Nothing stupid or boring about that.

And yes it is new! You must have X-ray vision when you think the king is naked!

  • Does anyone know the history of this piece? Is it from a larger work?

    Damien, UK

  • Yes, its from «Friday from light» I think, an opera of Stockhausen.

  • Stockhausen's later work sounds relatively consonant. Can you say something about the scales or rows he was using?

  • Sorry, I can't. I like Stockhausen's work, but I don't know much for now.

  • Okay - so we have a mutual person in common: Nick Tolle. I just graduated from NEC - he's an astounding talent, and it's great you have his performances up!!!

  • Nick was very very nice to work with, always well organised and well prepared. And in for ANY musical gig. He did a great masterclass in Detmold, Germany too. Great talent!

  • WOW!!! FANTASTIC! I can't believe Stockhausen wrote this, it's so conservative, but really, really FUN! I guess this is in the same vane as pieces like Stimmung or some parts of Mantra... I LOVE your technique - the coordination of the stick changes, the dead strokes, the muting, the glissandi at the end ... so perfect! I'm actually a composer working on a vib and baritone piece right now, and this performance really gives me some great ideas. THANKS SO MUCH, this really made my day!!!

  • I am sure many of us would like to hear more about your piece for vibes and baritone...! please let us know. thanks for your comment. You can check the score to see how stockhausen wrote it down. very precise, each bar in a different tempo. Really everything you hear is decided by the score, even the smallest rubato. GREETINGS! peter

  • Great piece, excellent performance. And it was very musical!

  • Good to discuss the music, what is flat, what is boring, what is senseless? What music do you prefer, and what are the things in that music you like? We often discuss modern music. What makes it special? What do some hear in it and other not?

  • my god your playing is just divine!! I mostly apreciated your huge range of dynamics and your very clean performance...congratulation, you're realy a great artist!

  • thanks, it is an honour to get respons like this...! like many artists: give it 100%, and what comes out is finally beyond control. it happens. what do you do?

  • What about marimba? I've always found the sound from that thing to be exquisite.

  • the marimba is great too! different colours and possibilities. all in all a completely different instrument when you get into both.

  • by the way. How can I get the score for this piece?

  • great work, I study in Portugal, do you still teach in amsterdam?

  • yes

  • Can you tell me if the vibraphone you play is studio 49 from Germany, Adams from holland or the late and sadly missed Deagan from america.

I have an old studio 49 (electric vibes) and would love to try this piece with it.

  • this vibe is saito bars and adams frame. a wonderful instrument. I choose the saito bars for the tuning for this particular piece. And, Stockhausen liked the sound of these bars.

  • I want to inspire composers to write for the vibraphone. this piece by stockhausen shows how wonderful the instrument is, and how it can sing using the length of the note, the pedal and different colours through different mallets.

  • I agree with you completely. The vibraphone possesses such a superb tone and it sounds incredible at every dynamic level. Composers have so many choices of pitched percussion to choose from and all of your videos demonstrate the versatility of our instrument.

  • Vibes are pretty popular among modern classical composers, probably because the tone can be so lush or biting.

  • sure, it has many possibilities. more used in chamber music then any other percussion instrument. but as a solo instrument, I am sure more repertoire is coming..

  • Well, after seeing this, I can tell you that I'm going to compose for vibes a lot more! This piece has shown me the versatility of the vibes in the hands of a experience musician, and its beautiful tone!
