The creepy big came on and my eyes widened and my heart stopped. Its a cartoon spider; not realistic by any stretch of the imagination. But my 5yr old brain said, "DAAAAAD!! HELP!!! THE SPIDERS GONNA GET MEEEEE!"

And then it ended and I wrote this.

Wow... This really brings back memories. I used to love the song in the beginning.

But now at age 14, it's pretty irritating when there actually is a spider in my bath and I have to yell to my dad...

@owlet1963 There are a number of theories (including having a bad past experience with a spider or being innately afraid of them through evolution), but there are criticisms to these theories. I've never had a bad experience with a spider, either. The human brain is a confusing thing, that's all I can really offer!

@ILiveForScience In no shape or form was I making fun of your fears, au contraire!! As for the moment triggering a fear of any animals , all it needs sometimes is for a child to see a grownup freak out about birds, spiders, dogs cats, you name it... My kid, about 18 months then, brought a HUGE spider( Black, hairy legs..) from outside and put it right into my palm! not wanting her to develop a fear of spiders, I valliantly waited til she was gone before I tossed the "monster" out the window.:)

@owlet1963 I didn't think you were making fun of my arachnophobia, I just thought I'd give some examples of why it occurs. Good parenting there by the way! Observation, imitation and reinforcement can lead to phobias. I wish I wasn't scared of spiders, this television programme makes them seem so nice : (

@ILiveForScience There are limits to my NON fear of spiders too, of course. Like when a suicidal spider decides to make a visit at the end of her thread right above your book while you read. you go "squish" and end up with a rather unusual book sign, lol.
