I love how some people in the crowd (norm knowers) and some of the comedians up there knew exactly what Norm was up to after his first "joke." His comedic timing is seriously impeccable. He could read a Dickens novel and I'm sure I'd still find something to laugh at.

Dude, this was a genius roast. I mean, Greg Giraldo was the king of roasts but Norm went all meta and troll with the roast format on this and it was hilarious. Also, that bit at the end was really sweet. I always dig it when people express their love for the guest of honor after shitting on them for 4 minutes b/c it reminds people of why they're there doing a roast in the first place. You don't attend one of those things if you actually hate the person. Awesome job, Norm.

I love that he went in an original direction, roast jokes, or at least the flaws the roasters point out, are so predictably boring...he's fat, she's ugly, he's a drunk etc. This is the exact opposite of what one has come to expect at a roast, and for that it's interesting as well as the funniest segment by far in any roast I've seen. i think a big part of these jokes was simply the delivery. Most weren't funny because of the punch lines or the set ups but how he delivered them. Norm macdonald is extremely funny and is a very smart comedian.

@rbdesign11 Norm was funny, but it was more of a commentary on typical roast material than earnest roasting. Norm told Marc Maron on WTF that he was told by the producer to be as shocking as possible. He figured if everyone else was being shocking in a typical way, the most shocking thing he could do was go out and tell antiquated jokes, and screw up the punchlines. Everything you're criticizing him for he did on purpose. Macdonald does that a lot: invert comedic conventions.

LOL Recent roasts have made the audience more and more uncomfortable with very embarrassing jokes perhaps starting with "I wouldn't fuck her with Bea Arthur's dick" while Bea Arthur was in the audience. Norm's act made the audience, especially the comedians on stage, even more uncomfortable showing there's more than one way to accomplish the same goal. He took them on a ride that I suspect people will remember more than any other moment that night.

I think it's ironic that this roast was one of the worst quality ones. Most roasts to me have some really bad jokes, but there are enough good ones to make it good.
