I personally use Windows and Linux on the same machine, and I'd say that with Linux on here, it eliminates majority of the flaws with Linux, and I have Windows for apps that can't run on WINE, so I have the best of both worlds. I'd much rather use Linux and Windows than just Mac OS X or Mac OS X with Linux, but having all 3 wouldn't be so bad
Open source means that the source code is available to the public but it has nothing to do with the price.. Freeware on the other hand is free of charge, but not necessary open source...
you are not listening to me linux is an open source okay open source based off of or a clone of unix, thus leading to linux being unix okay so essitiatly linux is unix, unix not an open source, linux is okay, and what i was saying OSX operating system platform is on unix but they put more of there software on it okay. now linux is a POSIX or portable operating system making it easier to port application between hardware platforms,
@defores just for clarification Linux, as a kernel is mostly open source software with a small amount of closed source binary drivers only used when there is not an opensource alternative in place. Mostly becuase certain harware manufacturers like to be belligerent. other than that it Is not "BASED" off of Unix or Minix. It was made to replace minix and to be Unix-like.
And for darwin..... Well its basically what happens when you inbreed alot of netbsd with a little frebsd code.
Linux (the kernel) and GNU (open source) are two different projects. Yes, linux was released under the GPL, but so have other kernels. GNU started out as utilities that can easily be modified and compiled, which means they can be modified to run on any operating system, not just linux.
hey clarify yourself to i was kidding but to a point i was right and so are you, Linux is a Unix clone written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX compliance.
heres the thing linux is based off of unix and OSX is based off of unix, linux is an open source this equals free, so OSX is based off of unix which should be free, your paying for an open source that sould be free becasue unix is an open source.
Wrong Linux is based on Mimix witch was a version for school (UNIX variant). UNIX is not free. OSX is UNIX compliance and POSIX. You should better inform yourself.
Ok I am really confused here. This video promotes OSX and unix correct? Bashes Windows but in the end it saids to try out Suse Linux which is endorsed by Microsoft. Sorry but I really don't like OSX nor Windows (especially Vista) just stick with Linux/ Unix and be happy.
If you want to dump windows go for linux! Why? Apple too is just a corporation like Microsoft but it actually sells a Unix based system for money, that is to say, you pay money for something you can get for free, see FreeBSD or any linux distributions...
Since when can you get a computer for free? Apple isn't that expensive. Try to put a computer together with the same high quality stuff. It only differs a few bucks.
Where Apple is ripping you of are the upgrades, but the standard out of the box isn't that expensive.
btw Alianware is also really costy too, same for voodoo pc's and all the other custom pc builders using high quality stuff, but nobody cares.... Why? becasue the stuff the create are great to show of at lanparty's
Ok, you forgot some things on the desktop configuration: 1. FireWire 2. Bluetooth 3. Slot-Load DVD DL burner 4. IrDA 5. Speakers 6. It's an All-In-One system 7. High quality webcam 8. Microphone 9. Bundled/optional Software 10. W-LAN (801.11 n) 11. Choice (Mac OS, Linux and Windows LEGALLY) 12. Mac OS 13. Mighty Mouse (love it or hate it) 14 .You can't compare The Alu keyboard to one that costs 10 bucks, that's stupid. Quite the same with Laptop though I do think they are a little overpriced.
1 and 2 are build in so they don't count. 3 is an additional $30. 4 is insignificant. 5, mac speakers aren't anything out of the ordinary so maybe an additional $20. 6 has no price value. 7 is not high quality, and only worth maybe $40 tops. 8 is insignificant. 9 is usually free. 10 is $35. 11 has no price. 12 is overpriced. 13 is uh... what? 14 you're right, so $20 extra
Yeah, just take a look at DMalenfant1's comment. It is self-explanatory. Apple is a ripoff, it sells a Unix based system for money and compared to a PC running linux it is unreasonably pricey...
Compared to a Linux system it's quite pricey, but yet who sells complete Linux systems?! Dell, they aren't on the frontier of bleeding edge design. Asus, it's a netbook, you can't run any heavy apps on that.
Some other, netbook vendors. System76, sells some decent stuff, yet they aren't quite pretty.
I run Linux as well on my Macbook Pro (Slackware 12.1). It's just the fact that people say Apple is expensive, but aren't saying one word how expensive other vendors are with nice designs.
Who the hell likes Dell anyways? Anyone with half a brain knows they over charge on their crap. Yeah there are a lot of PC parts that are really expensive (more than Mac) when they first come out, but wait 6 months, they drop drastically. At least with PC, you have a choice of what you want, Mac, you have to buy Mac parts. People like you are the same as people who love Sony and don't realize that there is better out there and Sony makes it a problem to mix their brand with another brand.
For $470 you can get a compaq with the same specs as a macbook. for $800 you can get an HP tablet PC. for the same price as most macs you can buy alienwares. Super gaming computers....i dont know about you but ill take performance and price over style(even though HP has plenty)
To be honest, a lot of what you pay for when you buy a Mac is the software - which, having used Linux with KDE 4.2, falls short by a long shot.
I don't see the point in buying a Macbook for college at $1,599 when I can buy any old notebook with 512 RAM (or even 256, if I choose the right software), stick Linux on it and be overall more productive.
Linux and Mac OS X are better and cheaper in the way of cost then Windows. I can't believe all the versions. It should only be two versions of Vista-Business and Ultimate...period.
Unix and Linux based Operating Systems are more stable and dependable.
Is this supposed to be 3D?

Are you on drugs?
Open Source is Linux? no way Linux is Open Source.
Open Source has it's own definition.
This video has nothing to do with open or closed source but it's about better alternatives for Windows and saves a lot of money at the and.
OSX is based on Next Step a company was build by Steve Jobs. Witch later is based on Open BSD but also x windows.
I never said that OSX has to be open source or freeware.
And there is also the Darwin Project witch is open source but based on OSX

It is maybe hard to learn but UNIX ain't Open Source!
And Open Source does not has to be by definition free.
Freeware and Open Source ain't the same

Is Unix derived from OSX or is OSX derived from Unix?....
exactly.
DMalenfant1 3 years ago
OSX is diretly based from Unix. Since it's based on BSD, which in it's turn was licensed code from At&t's Unix bought by Berkeley University

The ease of use is more confortable than linux, linux is a nice system but also a question of taste. I prefer OSX.
