Asides from the graphics, this ending is WAY better than the Anniversary version. Something about having no sound effects in space and just the music playing somehow made it more effective and tragic. Anniversary ruined it with the remade soundtrack and adding engine and explosion sound effects.

Basically, before the events of halo, before sgt was a sgt, he got into a firefight with some covenant. In the scuffle, he captured a whole box of plasma grenades, which he used to terrifying effect. He got a medal, promotion, and tons of radiation as a side effect for using all those grenades. That caused 'boren's syndrome', which requires extensive medial treatment. The sgt didn't want to wait for the whole recovery process to take place, so he foregoed it

go read "Halo: first strike". the legendary ending was non-canon, he escaped on a pelican along with 2 or 3 marines and another spartan. John-117 wasn't the last after all.
