  • While its batteries last, the Volt is a 100% electric car. The only difference to other electric cars is what happens AFTER the batteries run out. A Nissan Leaf will stop, a Volt will become a gas/electric hybrid. It will generate electricity from braking, and depending on the speed the propulsion power will come from the electric drive motor alone, from it and the generator motor, or from those two and the gas engine. In 100% electric mode, only the first two combinations are utilized.

  • electric !! i don't think so

  • @googlibrary Ditto !

  • 62 horse

  • Any vehicle that has on-board hydrocarbons burning in order for motion to occur is NOT pure EV. Pure EVs are where we will eventually end up no matter how we get there. Electrons are the most sensible form of energy to use. Centralized electron production from renewable sources should be the goal. The goal for economic, political, and environmental reasons. Hydrocarbons are a wasteful, cumbersome way of providing the fuel for our transportation needs.

  • Do they not see that they are such a tiny player in the world now? China, not GM will determine the primary form of personal transportation and they have decided it will be pure electric. Most of the world will waste time, money and effort with all of these other goofy combinations while a few countries that already "get it" will leap frog over us.

  • Believe me, I understand it will take all sorts of combinations to eventually get us to oil independence in regards to transportation. I also know that the media is talking about the Volt and Leaf in the same breath as if they are the same thing. The leaf is not the cat's meow but it is an electric vehicle. The Volt is not. the Volt is a form of hybrid. The "new" GM is making a simple idea complicated just like the did before bankruptcy.

  • Hybrids can run under %100 electric power while the gas engine runs a generator without being connected to the wheels. I hate hybrids, but this makes better sense. Its an electric car with a gas generator. The gas generator can also be coupled to the wheels in an emergency. Hybrids dont do that.

  • It was fun watching Pamela dance around the issue that this is nothing more than a hybrid under a different name. Complicate something enough and you can call it what ever you want because no one cares enough to figure it out or argue it.

  • @getyourbone Not so.

The Volt was never touted as a pure EV (electric vehicle) but rather from day 1 it was understood that the Volt is a Serial Plug-In Hybrid.
