  • super song

    but VEVO IS CORRUPT

  • @ footguy31

I think that this was early to mid eighties, the album is called "Cycles"..it's a GREAT album. There are quite a few songs that great to listen to with the windows down rolling along the highway. Hope this helps.

  • @Michiganbaker65 1989 actually...I have it on vinyl. hehe

  • the audio is turned down way too far! Can barely hear it even with the slider bar all the way to the right and my own volume all the way up! What gives?

  • what year did this song come out?

  • Doobies always were better when it was not the Michael MacDonald and the Doobie Brothers.

  • increible banda, increible tema. the best song., up bands USA. The best Rock USA the best.

  • these guys are one of the greatest american bands out there ,

  • my all time favorite by my boys...:)

  • im an 11 year old NO ONE AT SCHOOL LISTENS TO THIS BUT I DO AND ITS AWESOME

  • @athletics4987 YOU are awesome...life is more fun when you live it for yourself...

Drums have been playin me for over 50 yrs..I have a couple of yrs left to enjoy..

but I know the spirit will be in good hands...Rock on,B

  • Music is the doctor? Doctor...who?

  • Without a question, awesome song!! I heard this song back when I was like 10. Loved it. 14 going on 15 now, and I still love it. Can't stand the shit aka rap, hiphop, etc they call "music" that's out nowadays. THIS IS REAL MUSIC!!!!! Haha, can't play it loud enough!!

  • Biker , rocker , or just an average joe. This song is for everybody.

  • nice groove!

  • China Groves s riff was one of the best, the song has a slight remince of it!

  • Songfacts has one version of the story.

  • This song has not been on a set-list since they left Capitol. Notice no videos?. Tom thinks Capitol pushed him into making a pop version of "China Grove".

  • I love the song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Doobs hit #9 in Billboard, 7-15-89. Same tinkly piano as 'China Grove'. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • Would this make for a good Doctor Who tribute?

  • I absolutely love this song and thank you Brothers for playing and singing your asses off. The Doctor always fits my mood, be it happy, sad, pissed, playful, busy! It came along in my life during a very stressful time and it set me at my center again. I wore out this CD by listening to this song...even my kids who were all 3 and under knew every word. Peace and love, Brothers!

  • The Doobie Bros cannot be touched, this tune is fucking fabulous! I cannot get enough of it!

  • I have heard him say he does not like it.

  • @dewbeedoo

Oh, really?? Did he mention why not??

  • I don't believe Johnston hates the song. At that time in history he and Pat wanted to be a duo and not the Doobie Brothers. The record company said they didn't want Johnston and Simmons, they wanted the Doobies and they got what they wanted. I think Tommy was more disappointed about he and Pat being dissed. The Doctor would probably have been a single on Johnston and Simmons debut album.

  • You think they've been together for a while??

  • This is the song that introduced me to this legendary band when it was on the charts way back when I was in high school

  • Tommy Johnston on guitar is the 'Doobie' sound.

  • Tom thought capitol wanted another China grove.

  • @dewbeedoo

I figured that might've been the reason. The melodic similarities are obvious. Do you happen to remember if they asked him to write something like "CG" or if he wrote "The Doctor" first and then didn't want to use it because, coincidentally, it came out sounding similar to "CG"? Again, just curious.

  • Tom might not like it, but gotta do what pays the bills this day and time. BTW I am a guitarist who loves this song and this band GO SKYLARK!!!!

  • THIS AIN'T DOCTOR WHO :(

  • Most Doob fans like this song-I do. Tom Johnston wrote this song and he does not like it, he said Capitol records pushed him into doing it-He hates it.

  • Comment removed

  • @dewbeedoo

Did Tom say why he doesn't like it? Just curious.

  • Most Doob fans like this song-I do. Tom Johnston wrote this song and he does not like it, he said Capitol record pushed him inti doing it-He hates it.

  • They are appearing in Las Vegas (actually Henderson) at Sunset Station June 18!!! I've got my tickets! Haven't seen them since Camp Pendleton years ago. C'mon down!

  • Doobie WAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • This is just a good, kicka** song that just pulled me out of a couple of days of a real funk.

  • Excuse me, but isn't this song almost IDENTICAL to China Grove?

  • @BassPlayerSusan There were similarities, aka Tom Johnston. 0-)

    Stating the obvious.

  • What a reminder of how awesome The Doobies were without Michael McDonald screwing their sound up

  • @clg0003 Ya, the only song I like by Michael McDonald is "Taking it to the Streets".

  • @clg0003 Yeah, ok.

  • shit... i didn`t ask for that The Doctor... i asked for The Doctor.. :/

  • It was great when The Doobie Brothers got back together with Tom Johnston, because it was like this great group returned to it's roots, doing what they always did best! Peace, BobbyK

  • why does the guy take off running in 3: 26 ?

  • @cherios420 whatch out he's after YOU !!!

  • @cherios420 whatch out he's after YOU !!!

  • "Music is the doctor of my soul." That's on my screensaver. I couldn't imagine not feeling good about that thought. The song sets me soaring. I can listen to it over and over. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it starts with one of the greatest intros ever. Music IS the doctor of my soul. My music gets me through. I love to make music and I love to listen. I thank the Doobies for decades of great music and for this song, which I love dearly.

  • Damn good song!

  • feet

  • omg what the crap cant does toyota suck that bad to put their shitty prussy commercials on every video

  • Mozart developed musical themes. These guys have got it!! Its great r&r. Dance:)

  • 2 people are sick.

  • First time I ever saw them was on whats happening, I think i was like 5, I dont understand people putting down mcdonald since he made them all a ton of money. The ironic thing is this is cheesier than any song they thought they were putting out with mcdonald.

  • Good Song, BUT seems easily adoptable for a Dr. Pepper commercial, (it may have been). It has that 70's-80's feel, but it was produced in 1989, the style of the music and wardrobes, hairstyles was too much like early to mis 80's, so they really were not up with the times because late 80's music had a different feel about it. Pat Simmons with this hairstyle looks just like some popular co-star in a 80's series, just cannot place it.

  • @SBRslacker00 "What a fool believes"

  • THIS SONG IS BASED ON HOW TOM AND THE OTHERS FEEL WHILE OUT ON THE BIKES TOGETHER THAT IS WHY THE ALBUM AND THIS VIDEO THEY ARE IN LEATHER

  • Siempre recuerdo mi primer LP de The Doobie Brothers con Tolouse Street lo compré como 4 veces de tanto tocarlo Pepe Blanco de Lima, Perú

  • There is no doubt that The Doobie Brothers are pure rock and roll at its finest. Anyone that can't appreciate this fantastic group and their music can in no way be fans of rock music. This song just makes you feel good. Way to go guys, good job!!

  • @powerleg5 RIGHT ON !!!

  • thanks very much for your information, Im a trully fan of the Dobbies, I saw them in concert in puerto rico many yrs ago.

  • what was the name of the bass player in the Doctor Video?

Felipe Mangual Puerto Rico, did he died?

  • @famr761 No. He didn't die. His name is Tiran Porter, (bassist extraordinaire!) and he joined the band in 1972, after Dave Schrogen (sp? sorry) left for medical reasons. Tiran left the group in the late 80's or early 90's. Then John Cowan (superb) replaced him; and eventually Skylark, (solid bassist) who is with Doobies now; but Cowan is Touring (2010) because Skylark suffered a stroke and is recuperating nicely.

  • Come back again Doobie Brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Audio level is very low at least bring it up to unity

  • Audio level is very low

  • John Hartman is the orginal drummer (a true strength of the Doobs!) Now I've been happily married for 35 years, There's something about Johnny Hartman. I can't get my eyes off of him. Sigh. ;0)

  • Best Doobie Brothers lineup ever! I love the Toulouse Street/Captain and Me lineup the best! This time around they had Bobby LaKind tho (RIP)

  • This is the best song they ever did!! Tiran Porter is hot!!

  • this year's hall of fame class should include the doobie brothers! as well as kiss, chicago, bon jovi, rush, journey and boston - 7 of my favorite bands that are NOT IN THE HALL but DESERVE IT!

  • THere's no mistaking Tommy Johnston's voice.

  • Yes, music IS the doctor!!!

I can't imagine a world without music. I don't want to live in that world....

  • "Skunk" Baxter is missing from the "lineup".

  • Music is the doctor of my soul!!!

  • Hit #1 rock, #9 pop, #31 AC in Billboard. Anybody else besides me think that it's an egregious mistake that the Doobs STILL aren't in the Rock hall of fame, yet? Write back, and let me know. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg Totally agree that it's egregious that the Doobies aren't in the Hall of Fame! They still put on a heck of a show too. I very much enjoyed their concert in Cincinnati this summer!

  • Awesome song !!!!! Music is the Doctor no matter what kind of music that there is to listen to. WOW!!!

  • One of the best comeback tours of all time!!!

  • It's amazing how a record company can post a video with such poor (low audio) sound quality.

  • Tom Johnston is the ONLY voice for the Doobies!

  • @RELubber You're so right, my friend. Michael McDonald took 'em so far from what made 'em great, right, gang? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg hey now, i like both versions of the band just fine!

  • @samboy1288 Well, ya know, different strokes for different folks. If ya like Michael's version of the Doobs, that's just fine. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg yes I do, but granted i should mention i like the guitar-driven sound of the johnston-led doobies better.

  • @samboy1288 You're right, sam. Tommy's version did rock harder than Michael's version, right? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg Don't forget jeff Skunk Baxter's (Guitarist Extraordinaire) influence on the band from '74 to '82!

  • good song and video thanks.

  • Tom Johnston is sooo cool as is Patrick Simmons

  • Tom Johnston is soooo cool....as Patrick Simmons

  • I saw Tommy Johnston and his family eating dinner at an Olive Garden in Vegas one time.

  • To Larry,,,for playing ever instrument in the band : ) Enjoy!!

  • radio seems to have forgotten about this amazing track - and that just isnt right........

  • @kmdiver911 id really like to hear them play it again on a rock station, i wasn't old enough to remember the time when it was a no. 1 rock hit!

  • Why aren't these guys in the Rock and Roll Hall of yet?

  • @Chrishafner why aren't The Doobie Brothers in the ROCK 'n' ROLL Hall of Shame (yes, shame) neither is Rush, Journey, Kiss, Foghat and others. but yet Madonna, Prince and ABBA are. granted all are hugely influential artists - but they do not belong in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. maybe someday the hall will recognize the Doobies.........

  • @kmdiver911

Truth be told, they truly do belong in "The Hall". As does Kiss & maybe Journey, Foghat and Rush...I don't think so. As for ABBA, I don't know who voted them in, but it must have been based on sales alone. I must respectfully disagree with you on the other two. Madonna, love her or hate her....she belongs. I don't know what you were smoking, when you said Prince didn't belong. i believe you'll be hard pressed to find one person to agree with you on that one.

  • @deenet32 i can find plenty who agre with me that Prince DOES NOT belong in the roll hall of shame. he is a huge talent and has influenced scores, but he is not rock. Edddie Trunk, one of the biggest names in radio (and a host of vh1's That Metal Show) has said the same thing. from the hall come the words.."Nominees should have demonstrable influence and significance within the history of rock and roll." Prince is R&B, some jazz and pop. influential and talented, but not rock.

  • @shanek911 OK!.......Hers's my reponse to your statement about Prince not belonging in the "Hall Of Fame".All you need to do, is to watch video of Prince performing with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Danhi Harrison & the gang at the "Hall Of Fame's" inducution of George Harrison a couple of years back , playing on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and to watch & listen his solo and say Prince isn't a rocker?

    Didn't you see "Purple Rain"?

  • Comment removed

  • @deenet32 an artist like Prince, known for r&b/pop, who as a GUEST plays rock no more makes them a rock artist than does it make Dire Straits rock guitarist Mark Knopfler a country artist becaue he played with Randy Travis. the reason why people buy Prince cds are for HIS style of pop. i'm sorry, my friend, i still have to disagree. Prince may have played some rock, but does not belong in the "hall." no more should Mark Knopfler be in the country hall of fame just because he did some country.

  • @TheShanek911

Using your logic, I'm guessing you don't believe James Brown or Little Richard belong in "The Hall" either. Rock n' Roll came out of R&B, plus Roc-A-Billy and some jazz. TOO MANY LABELS...................

  • @deenet32 little richard absolutely belongs in the hall for the fact that he turned music on it's pivot heals with his brand of playing that new thing called rock 'n' roll. matter of fact, it was little richard, fats domino, jerry lee lewis and bill haley who the legendary dj alan freed was talking about when he came up with the term, "rock 'n' roll." when he said "...let the music rock so the kids will roll......." but u do bring up a good point - there are way too many labels.

  • @deenet32 you are right, rock did come from r&b, which in turn came from gospel but then in 1951 Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats (who actually was Ike Turner) released the first true "rock" record, then in the mid 50s Chuck Berry, Elvis, Bill Haley and Bo Diddley revolutionized it, popularized it and brought it to the masses. but you gotta love Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash who gave a whole new spin to rock with their brand of roc-a-billy. but u do bring up a good argument.

  • @deenet32 you really don think Rush and Foghat don't belong in the hall of shame? i respect your opinion of course, but foghat is one of the pioneering bands to make the blues/rock slide guitar a household genre. their blues/rock would influence everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughn to The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and even work on some of Cinderella's 1980 cds is reminiscent of Foghat's early work. and as for Rush, they perfected (after Yes of course) true progressive rock. 2112 is a masterpiece.

  • dimpledick3inch - isn't that what you want for a "comeback" single - the same identifiable sound but updated?

  • dimpledick3inch - it's supposedly the same chord progression in reverse!

  • This is a great feel-good song from the 80's. Loved it then like I love it now...

  • I'm a DJ for an internet radio station. My DJ name is DJ SpinDokta and I open my shows with this song. I love it because music IS the doctor for all of your soul's ailments!!!!! Rock on Doobies!!!!

  • THANK YOU!! 4 posting this song AT LAST!!! Not only is it my fav by the Doobies...it's one of my all time fav songs....hands down!!

  • Tom Johnston made the Doobies sound famous, this is the shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Doobies SANS Michael McDonald...Yay!

  • Cool man

  • Actually my very favorite Doobies song of more recent vintage. Shame they seem to have dropped it from their set list the past few tours.

  • this song IS the epitome of music! No matter what your mood is, you can find a song to match it.THE DOCTOR tells you to listen to the music, it's like a perscription; makes you feel better

  • I'm a man who lives in the city! I'm a man who lives in the street! LISTEN TO THE DOCTAH!

  • Love Tiran Porter - it ain't the Doobies without him....

  • I just read an interview with Tom Johnston and he didn't like this song too much. Said it was too slick and too pop.

  • After all that great music in the 70's I can see why he might feel that way. Still a great song though, and the harmonies are classic Doobies!

  • Awesome to find this one...from Cycles...used to play it on the radio station I worked at and the song holds true...music is the doctor of my soul!

  • Such a great song!!! One of my favorite's by them!!!

  • This is what it's all about... playing music & having fun doing it!

  • thank you! thats as right as anyone could be!

  • @mistyh1

Exactly, this is fantastic clip, couldn't agree more.

  • @mistyh1 Say it again!!!!

  • No frills, no chills, and best of all no gimmicks. Just basic, high quality rock.

  • i think that was their comeback song.great song.

  • What a comeback song...when you listen

to this song you hear "Long Train Runnin"

and "China Grove" that's what I love about

this song. Also like one other said in a post..the legendary lineup of the D.B. is

    present.

  • That's excatly how i feel.. Love Ty,

    Bobby Lakind, Tommy and fave,....

    Little John Hartman...sigh....

    Cathy

  • In simpler terms, they soundlike they did when they first began, and I agree.

  • @hunterdog62 comeback song? this song is from 1989. Is this a recent version?

  • @tbcpuebla Yes! I could be wrong... but I think all the original members except for

Michael McDonald got back together to record this CD. Up to that point I did not hear of any CD's from them in many years. If you know of anything before that time... I'm sure I had not heard anything. I call it a comeback CD! Just my 2 cents!

  • i remember when this came out in the late 80s. Great post! thanks.

  • Great post...what a song...Tiran Porter, John Hartman, Bobby LaKind (RIP), and Pat Simmons with short hair! Unreal!

  • I think Patrick Simmons also had shorter hair in the early 80s when he did his solo stuff with So Wrong.

  • i love this song. it peaked at #9 on the billvorad hot 100. it should have gone 8 notches higher.

  • Amazing song!!!

  • ty.. i lokk .. so long for this great song..
