  • You truely are a freaking genius for uploading this! I ain't seen this for over 20 years. It carries a strong message....... and its still the same in this day and age

  • I HAVE MY BABYS WATCH THIS EVERY YEAR BEFORE OPENING GIFTS. THEN WE SING HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JESUS. I HAVE LOVED THIS CARTOON SINCE I WAS A KID AND NOW MY KIDS DO.

  • Did anyone else notice how this was made before or right at the start of World War 2?

  • peace sells..

  • @coolness124321 but who's buying?

  • "But in despair I bowed my head,

'There is no peace on earth,' I said,

'For hate is strong and mocks the song

of "Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men."'" - Longfellow, 1864, on the occasion of another war.

  • WWII Christmas with animals?

  • The little animals found peace living among the war items, man uses to destroy each other.

  • I want peace, but I'm willing to fight for it.

  • This cartoon was nominated for a Nobel Peace prize. Makes more sense than giving the prize to NDAA supporting Obama.

  • wow!

  • I like this and the sniffels the mouse cartoon

  • wow ! quite prophetic!

  • @carysatch

    "quite prophetic" ???

How so? There are billions of people on earth. This cartoon says that because we fight - we will extinct ourselves.

Whether or not that is ultimately prophetic is up to debate.

But - for now - this cartoon is uterly NOT PROPHETIC and nothing but a pile of pasifistic propaganda CRAP.

  • @Gernansky I actually was watching many old shows at the time and my laptop locked-up, so when I came back, I made the comment on the wrong cartoon, then it was not an option to remove it on my android app, so i left it, wondering if anyone noticed or gives a good crap. I agree it is up to debate, yet I believe alot of the comments/criticism comes across so crude, my first impression of you is that you are a total asshole, and the more I read your stupid comment, I know that is true. 8]

  • @Gernansky Sir, you are a fucking fascist. Oh, also an asshole.

  • ITS REALLY SAD HOW THIS CARTOON WAS EXPLAINING EXACTLY HOW YOUR ACTING. ITS TALKING ABOUT PEACE ON EARTH AND THE WILL TO STOP WARS OR ELSE IT WILL END UP DESTROYING US ALL. YOUR LOOKING WAY TOO MUCH INTO IT INSTEAD OF TAKING TIME TO LISTEN.

  • Happy Christmas.

War is over if you want it.

  • Cute cartoon yet disturbing. It makes a lot of sense. Shameful that humans are that way.

  • I've watched this every Christmas since I was 14 thanks for uploading

  • @KitsunReichan Only a Jew would mark your Christmas wish as spam. Well, Merry Christmas to you, too!

  • I love these old Christmas cartoons!

  • i never noticed this before, but the slider thing for the video is in the form of a snowflake

  • I think this is about how humans are violent and destructive beings and we are very quickly going to wipe ourselves out then the other animals can thrive without man, and there will finally be peace on earth

  • @Simo606 Yeah, right. - As if the animals don't kill and eat each other. They have no worries about predators, parasites or infectious diseases. Sure.

  • @GuestPest The difference being that animals kill as part of their survival instinct, and only kill what they need. Animals do not go on wholesale slaughter just so they can have what some other animal has. This is a broken world because of men.

  • I wish cartoons and television could be more real with kids like they used to. Now they dumb everything down and sugar coat things. If they played this on tv kids wouldn't understand it because all these shows tell them to just focus on themselves and not real life. I know they're kids but do we have to always lie to them?

  • @Smil3GiggleLov3 Really! TV used to be much more educational and as kids you didn't even know it, you just came up in the world knowing all this stuff, a lot of it came from TV and you found out it was common sense and common knowledge. That's a foreign concept to people today.

  • @Smil3GiggleLov3 Amen!!

  • @Smil3GiggleLov3 more guts for kids.

  • You sould check out the 1955 - "Good will to men" version. Its the same idea, but I find that version to be more profound. This one is great also

  • Gradpa is getting way too into his story

  • well that was kind of depressing...

    peace

  • I love these kind of cartoons, only the best from back then.

  • As a child one thing I took away from this cartoon, one thing I associated with Christmas when you're little was the idea of security in your home, you know, the house is warm, you have a warm bed to sleep in, that when you go to sleep on Christmas Eve it will be comfortable and safe...just like when the two babies are put back in their cradle by the fire, that to me was a big part of what you got out of Christmas.

  • A very beautiful cartoon with a simple message!....Thanky for putting this on YouTube and have a very good Christmas and all the best for the new year

  • Will we ever learn?

  • Pretty chilling when you think about it.

  • @eyedelon As a kid, I didn't really get WHY this was shown with Christmas cartoons, I knew that the song had been redone but I didn't really get what it had to do with Christmas. And I knew it was kind of disturbing, and I didn't know about WWI and WWII at the time, but I liked this cartoon, it's always been a Christmas favorite. And WHY they don't show this on TV NOW at Christmastime I'd like to know!

  • @TheBookWorm1718 At least now there's Youtube and Facebook to get the message out!

  • @eyedelon Totally, thank God for Youtube or a lot of greats would be lost to the masses. Until it was pulled for copyright issues this was one place where everybody could see What Have we Learned, Charlie Brown?, which was a tribute to WWII vets and showed the Peanuts gang at Omaha Beach and Flanders learning about what the Allies went through on D-Day. It's not on DVD and hasn't been shown on TV for 14 years since Nickelodeon had the rights to Peanuts. What's up with that?

  • Man, I remember watching this as a kid and it used to be showned in CN this time a year along with other great cartoons from Marrie Melodies and Hanna-Barbera. Now what CN shows is nothing but trash. This were cartoons that really had a meaning and were worth watching and no matter how many years pass they will remain as a classic.

  • I haven't seen this in years!

  • Fact is One Day That..... Within the next few decades scientests may make Anthromorphiriser which turns Animals in to anthros (furries if your a Furfag) humans due to lack of oil, gold and lead (which makes bullets, No Humans are a warlike species don't start that stupid peace shit, in the past it only lasted years at most) then the anthros will want to Destroy humans U MADD FURFAGS?

  • This is beyond beautiful!

  • You know the fact that Germany had just invaded Poland and started the second world war exactly 3 months prior to this cartoon was released is probably the most creepiest thing about this cartoon. BTW this cartoon was released Dec.9. 1939, so says IMDb.

  • @g00nter22032 People were expecting war in europe. There's nothing fantastic about this. This is what people feared in the summer of 1939.

  • @Pfisiar22 I understand and I apologize for the miscommunication. But that wasn't what I was trying to get at. I was remarking that this cartoon that came out 3 months after one of the bloodiest wars started to the day and is to me a cry for peace is kind of eerie. But I understand where you are coming from.

  • I absolutely could not agree with cleon24769 any more. You have solidly hit the nail on the head. Bravissimo.

  • Watching cartoons like this are why, on average, most people from the last 3 generations have morals.

Today's kids are fucking spoiled through every which way AND loose from shit crapped out of modern day Disney and 21st century pop music's asshole.

  • @cleon24769 I have to agree. Those of us who grew up on the original Walt Disney works know the difference. I used to know all the Mickey Mouse cartoons, all the Disney movies, the TV shows, today I don't know what any of it is and I wouldn't want to know because isn't any of it worth knowing about, none of it is made with the old Disney magic. It didn't die when Walt did but it sure got killed off somewhere in the past couple decades.

  • I note it looks like a WWI memory, which fits b/c the US didn't enter WWII (which was already in progress in Europe) until December 1941. The German helmets are WWI. It's a beautiful story. Love the message.

  • Made before the USA's entry into WW2. A number of the animators who worked on this were WW1 veterans who saw combat. Two years later, MGM was making films for the war effort.

  • Wonderful classic cartoon.

  • Nazis killed all the good men at this time...

  • Wonderful cartoon, so glad you shared this one...

  • I think this may well be my very favorite Christmas Special. It's message is surprising and a little depressing but it rings very true even in this day and age. I know that I pray for peace. I do not want to be one of those people who forget the meaning of religion and the bible.

  • This is classic material, I love it. Can't wait until I get my own characters into the world of animation. Thanks for sharing this video.

  • Around 6:30 they play the Peace on Earth melody in minor... eye watering...

  • "She will remember you when men are fairy tales told by rabbits" <---TvTropes has brought me here under Fridge Horror.

    ...I don't get it.

  • @Kari166 When you watch the cartoon, you see how mankind wipes each other out through warfare. The person who linked this video from that quote didn't mean anything about animals inheriting the earth - But notice how it says "when men are fairytales," not "if." The Fridge Horror is that humanity will end up wiping itself out.

  • Too bad the world can't be as peaceful as the little animals are living in this cartoon. If only people could see the meaning of "Peace on Earth, Good will to Men"

  • @Moonstone2732, animals are definietely NOT peaceful. XD

  • @Kari166 animals are awesome, people are not peaceful

  • @cheapcape, animals who rip each other apart, animals who maul each other, animals who kill each other's offspring, or leave their own offspring to die, etc.

    Yeah, so peaceful. :P

  • one thing that would never be seen on cartoons today is the bullet hole in the helmet. yet, that is the reality of war.

  • I saw this as a kid. My father was a Navy guy. But this war shit never got to me except for this cartoon,

  • God bless those who made this cartoon.

  • Ya know you really kind of wonder if that's what it feels like when in a war, when will it just kill us all? This is a pretty heavy cartoon and frankly I think more people should see it because of what it means.

  • one thing to say this animals appears smarter than the humans :) peace on earth and goodwill to men!!

  • interesting how this movie was made before the atom bomb was dropped..

  • @thetasurfers MGM did a remake, "Good Will To Men", in 1955 that covers the atomic bomb era. It's on youtube.

  • @smichelle65 yeah, i know it, thanks though! :)

  • @thetasurfers

There was a Hanna Barbera remake where the atom bomb is mentioned.

  • @thetasurfers But World War I, "the war to end all wars." was still within living memory. Images of war are quite graphic here.

  • @carrotjuse yes i know. it´s nice to see how cultivated the people on this video here are haha...

  • is it just me or does that old grandpa squirrel know our race a little too well?

  • The animation of the realistic battle parts are really ahead of its time, equalling much Anime, Heavy Metal, even Disney's Victory Through Air Power and the Fleishers' Superman series.

  • @midzzle

Probably her husband was killed in the great rabbit versus squirrel wars of 1938.

  • Oh. It's just me.

  • Tanner only roars one time?

  • A decent cartoon, but I don't care too much for it's portrayal of humans. Yes, man makes war, but the people who made it should learn the difference between wars of aggression and wars of self-defence.

  • @sonrouge It was made in 1939 Post WW1/during WW2 before the US got involved. People were scared and uneasy about war again so it's understandable.

  • @sonrouge: If it hadn't been for Prescott Bush and a bunch of other slimy elites funding Hitler, WWII would have been completely avoidable. Then and now, the best self-defense would be to make the 500 wealthiest families on the planet do a perp walk and put them all on trial for crimes against humanity. Now THAT would be a defense!

  • @sonrouge Or just learn to not make war at all?

  • @GodofFrankie As long as some people think they have the "right" to initiate force against others for any reason outside of self-defence, there will be wars. Something that must be remembered while you're calling for an end to wars is the fact that a person (or nation) has a right to rational self-defence.

  • Oh! I've been looking for this forever!

  • Yes animals kill each other. However, you don't see Parrots massing in the hundeds of thousands or even millions, to kill all the Crows in the world. Do you ? Insects do, but its for food, and the attrition is in the hundreds of thousands because of their size.

  • Wow, I had never seen this before, but considering its message I'm not surprised that it's not shown often.

  • @JMarchOHare Used to be shown every Christmas. This and Bed time for Sniffles were among my favorite Christmas cartoons growing up watching Cartoon Network. I think this might be a banned cartoon along with alot of other MGM/Tex Avery/Chuck Jones cartoon. It's a real shame :(.

  • @Ryuho09: I doubt it's banned. Practically nothing ever is. "Banned" is just a bullshit word YouTubers toss around because it makes people click on their videos, thinking they're going to see something edgy and forbidden. They don't.

In fact, I'll bet it's easier to find now than it was when I was a kid. I'm 52. My cartoon-watching days were mostly in the 'sixties and 'seventies. I never saw it back then. If you saw it on Cartoon Network, it's actually gotten more exposure in recent years.

  • @JMarchOHare I saw it on CN when i was a kid in the 90s and pre 9/11 haven't seen it since. Alot of cartoons like these have been banned due to idiotic reasons. There have been Droopy cartoons banned because the wolf smokes in a scene and things to that nature. I'm not entirely sure if this one is banned or not but again I haven't seen this during Christmas in years and I still watch alot of cartoons. Cartoons > all the shitty Reality TV on these days.

  • don't animals kill each other and shit?

    yeah

    they do

  • @refan15 Yes animals kill each other. However, you don't see Parrots massing in the hundeds of thousands or even millions, to kill all the Crows in the world. Do you ? They strike a balance, for food.

  • @refan15 but only out of necessity. it´s always balanced. everything in nature is balanced - but men´s way of coping with it

  • I saw this years ago on Cartoon Network

  • I remember when I would fall asleep as my grandpa outlined the horrors of war.

  • I know that someday we will trie to make are world a better place for evryone

  • See it's funny because it won't take long before the animals start killing each other.

  • Interesting; as it was released on the year of the start of the worst war ever, which brought society to the brink of destruction. Can we still find time to learn anything?

  • Is this cartoon supposed to be an alternative history in which World War I wiped out all humans or is the war portrayed another war?

Since Grandpa Squirel says it was the biggest war fought (which World War I was until World War II happened)

  • Lovely

  • That's an old squirrel...1918 - 1939

  • Makes sense this is released the same year ww2 starts..

  • @bobsmedoggy Ooh. I like that quote. It gets ya thinking.

  • This was both scary yet touching

  • And with that book they suddenly became super intelligent and evolved to the point where they build cities out of war helmets and rape chipmunks on wendsdays

  • I bet this movie infleunced the movie "9" its the same concept somewhat just lacking the scifi elements

  • oh humans...

it's so ironic that this cartoon was made in the year WWII started.

  • @MistaPimpa Not really ironic. Wasn't it made in protest of the war?

  • @lilbooshy well I did some research but didn´t find anything about it being made in protest of the war or not, but yeah I guess you are right ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I now know why this didn't win an Oscar: it promoted an anti-war sentiment! It explains why Der Fuhrer's Face DID win an Oscar, too! :P

  • @DoloresHaze84 "Ferdinand the Bull" won the Academy award for Best Animated Short that year.

  • Увидел этот мультфильм в глубоком детстве и с тех пор неравнодушен к пост-апокалипсису :)

    From Russia with love)

  • I love this cartoon but...is the grandpa high or something?

  • @MultiCARTOON what the fuck?

  • kiss your hand 10 times 2 enters say his name 15 times out loud 2 enters post this on two other videos 2 enters then look at your

  • It all makes sense now! The only way to have peace on Earth is to KILL EVERYONE.

  • evolution choose man to master the earth and live in peace but if man choses to act as an animals then so be it man will be a animal and die as animal unless man changes the word man then will be another word for boogyman

  • See? Even in this video's comments there's people saying "peace" will only come when THEIR Master Lord comes to reign with his Kingdom (no democracy, y'see) and get rid of all opposition (pretty tolerant huh).

That's why we can't have nice things.

  • Merry Christmas from Canada

  • Why the HELL would you give this a thumbs down?

I cried watching this. More than once. Damn, I can't imagine a cartoon like this being made today...

  • when i saw this i thought about the episode peace on earth from adventure time thumbs up if u are an adventure time fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anyone else think the old squirrel never explained why they say "good will to men"?

  • i was waiting for a bear or something to come in at the end and tear up the little village, killing all the squirrels....peace on earth my ass!

  • yeah it is Christmas cartoon, yeah send a message this was always one of my favorite Christmas cartoon ty for posting

  • I don't really think of this as a Christmas cartoon... However, it has an amazing anti-war message.

I'm glad I found this, all I could remember were the animals looking at "Thou shalt not kill."

  • This cartoon scared me as a kid, but I liked it just the same.

  • I don't know I feel about this... It seems a bit corrupted...

  • wow 0 amazing what having been involved in two world wars, the second one still underway, will do to get artists to really push the envelope on messaging. Imagine if this had been played during the Xmas right after 911 -- would it have been considered treasonous??

  • @Idysseus They did ban alot of music from being played on the radio and in the music store where I worked the day after 9/11. Bob Dylan being one of many, also rage against the machine was a band that we were no longer allowed to play. Alan Parson's Project was released on 9/11 and the cover showed the twin towers in flames and an apple wrapped in barbed wire, we received stickers to cover up the picture 2 days after 9/11. POD was also released on 9/11.

  • It's difficult to believe this film is 71 years old, and the message hasn't aged.

  • Merry Christmas

  • Merry Christmas From INDIA...

  • Merry christmas from Davao

  • Merry Christmas from New Zealand!!!!!

  • Does Grampa have a Irish accent?

  • whats the name of the xmas carttoon that only had music no voices?

  • @illedelphian merry melody?

  • @illedelphian "silent" night? get it? no? just kidding i don't know.

  • Scripture out of context again "thou shall not kill his brother?" Meat eating people and vegetarians will never be brothers HA

  • this could of been a reality if WW1 kept going

  • Jesus will come back and stop WW3 good cartoon though.

  • Prophecy.

  • We can't have peace on earth tragically because human beings are basically stupid. Oh sure we have incredible talents in all fields but sadly we are full of superstition, hate, lack of appreciation for the wonderful gifts of life most of us are granted at birth such as eyesight, arms, legs, our heart, brain, ears, mouth and the rest. We hate over skin colour for goodness sake! Skin that is that colour because of our source of life, the sun. Madness. We hate because we are egomaniacal.

  • I love this video. When I watched it as a kid, I didn't understand it was about World War I. It breaks my heart to think it was made in 1939, at the outbreak of WWII. Clearly humanity hadn't yet applied the message of this video.

  • @ewhitsma I didn't get it as a kid either, and oddly enough, I never questioned it, I never thought 'what is this about?' or anything like that, I didn't really get the whole concept with the war, but I did get, as I guess everybody got, the aftermath with the animals.

  • That scene where the two last men fighting until the one drowns in a puddle of mud and blood is still imprinted in the back of my mind til this day

  • @sillygrl23 Me too, for me that was a very memorable thing.

  • @sillygrl23

Upon seeing that scene, I thought - "but, where were the *women* as the last men died? What happened to them?"

  • I remember watching this cartoon when I was little......and it wasn't even Christmas at that time. Good memories

  • merry christmas from california

  • I remember this cartoon when I was little!

  • Thanks for the beautiful video. Wishing everyone have PEACE and Merry Christmas! Countdown - One week more - It is Christmas Eve 2010 Have a Joy! Peace! Healthy on the holidays season to everyone on this beautiful Mother of Nature!

  • I love this cartoon! Really makes you think about things...

  • We can't have peace on earth until all the humans have killed each other, then the animals will have peace. That's what I learned, hahaha! I think it's true...

  • We cannot truly have peace on earth until people learn to let go of their judgements. If we hate because of preconceived notions, we will not acheive an everlasting peace.
