ok so black people arent only the best at basketball but at shotokan as well... NOT RACIST just saying that was an amazing display of speed and power with the black fighters! awesome!!!
Elwy hall is a best fighter well he never beated frank brenan but still hes soo hard, i've trained with him last saturday at catford... 4 hrs os kumite it wass harddddd
Kata and Kumite are intrinsically linked. Kata is like an encyclopedia that tells you more as you progress. Every move can be a block, a strike, an evasion, the limit is your imagination.
Anyone that slags off another martial art shows themselves as shallow, a good fighter would be a good fighter in any style. However, I would say once rules are introduced, you will limit that style. TKD is no longer what it once was...
Shotokan comes from the founder Gichin Funakoshi's pen name 'Shoto'
Shotokan is real and honest and taekwondo is purely a sport. You cannot be effective if you concentrate solely on your kicks. You have to be good with your hands and no one can contest that about practioners of shotokan.
Sorry everyone but i disagree with the ones that say taekwondo is no match for shotokan... i think all martial arts are great and unique, but every martial artist has a weak point, as nobody is perfect, so it doesn't matter which matial art you know, the most important is your hard work and dedication to it and this, yes, will make the difference in a fight.
with shiai kumite and world championships the line between sport and martial art becomes difuse, so kata and kihon are the ways to preserve de original tenchniques.but if u rly want to improbe ur shotokan try training not only at the dojo.(i.e, go to the beach and try nukite and shuto un the sand or the water, and that stuff.
First of all.. imdking2, if you're gonna look at the real world, taekwondo is no match for a shotokan traditional fighter. KEN AND RYU in street fighter is not shotokan, their style is ansatsuken. and last of all.. SHOTOKAN KILLS!!!!!!!!!! :D
The quote at the beginning in incomplete. It should say, "The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." -Gichin Funakoshi.
and experts and masters from ages past have carefully preserved the various kata, kata should be practiced and performed in the same way as they are taught... But in actual combat, it will not do to be hampered or shackled by the rituals of kata. Instead, the practitioner should transcend kata, moving freely according to the opponents strengths and weaknesses."
during sparring you employ various techniques from kata without your even realising it. your stances shifting accordingly is a direct result of practising kata.
To Kieron, Im only a 7th kyu in Shotokan, and I dont know much about point sparring, but as for kata, remember what Gichin Funakoshi said in his "Twenty Guiding Principles of Karate." "Kata have been at the center of karate-do training from ancient times. Since techniques and methods of every kind have been woven into kata,
kata is the essence of karate. it works on your reactions and reflexes and not to mention stances. those are all what is important. if you simply spar you will be one dimentionaln and limited.
it was the good time....

In competition yes, taekwondo is focused on kicks, but in dojo, training is also concentrated in other techniques.

I used to train alot of TKD in many different places. Some of it was JUNK, some was ok.
But SHOTOKAN, is known for being consistantly strong across the board.
Funakoshis quote about character development proves that too much traditional (OLD school) training is not good. It creates a one dimensional fighter.
Kata not good for fighting. good for consentrational, endurance. AND is the 'art part' of Martial art.
kids now?
