Haha... sweet! Great tone, great vibe! My only crit would be the sound. Since 1927 brought The Jazz Singer, everything after that could have sync'd sound. Placing your action in the 1940's means that you can actually do proper sound. HOWEVER, I like the silent film approach, so I would change the dates in the world of the film to pre-1927. And THEN, I would add a piano soundtrack all the way through, because the film needs some audio beyond the ticker/flicker of the camera.
