It is worth bearing in mind that Queen in 1991 were on top of their game: 2 number 1 albums, a number 1 with Innuendo (the song) and few successful singles that year BEFORE mercury died. I have a feeling that they would probably have been swept aside with the emergence of the Brit Pop movement (the last major movement in popular music btw), but on the otherhand - Queen weathered the changes in music with Punk where many other bands of the 70's didn't.

Another thing is, I reckon that Freddie would have made efforts outside the music world, becoming an actor in THEATRE, maybe the odd picture, but Queen would've stopped touring by 2000. Mercury even said himself that running about on stage at 40+ years would be ridiculous. Again, on the other hand, Mick Jagger is nearly 70 and still running about on stage.

Mercurys death left an incalculable loss to the music world: His death is as big a blow to music as that of Lennon, imho.
