I think it is unfortunate that most folks don't know, or have never heard this version, the ONE by the composer. It clearly, to me, brings out the strength of the song so much more than the Phil Collins version, not to take anything away from Phil Collin's great work and songs. It is probably also true that most people have no idea who wrote the "Tootsie" song, and who is singing it... It Might be You....

This song is so emotionally powerful ! Many of today's(even in the past) songs express loss from the female point of view due to the males faults, This Song how ever is one if not the only song expresses loss from the Males point of view due to the Female faults. Stephen Bishop captures the inner most feelings of Males that actually tried to make the relationship work but couldn't (due to the lack of support of the other half).the Phil C with Marilyn M version is way too "sugar Coated".
