  • Actually, J.A.O. Preus, who was governor of Minnesota from 1920-24 was responsible for building the Gunflint Trail. It was of course used for mining, etc. But it took such an initiative for the sake of the en joyment (and accessibility) of nature to make it a suitable road for regular transportation.
