Yzerman. As much of a hero as he was a hockey player. I was there that night for my first playoff game ever. I was nine years old. Yzerman became my hero that night.
The Wings may have lost the next series but without this goal the Wings never would be who they are now. 4 cups in 11 years followed... If they lost to StL too much shuffling would have been done to be successful and people forget when bowman came to Detroit Yzerman was on the chopping block.... Thank the hockey gods he scored....
@77HeIix He obviously must have been confused. After all, they conceal that goal horn and that giant logo painted in the center of the ice so well. Add the thousands of screaming fans in Red Wings jerseys and nobody could ever tell that the game was in Detroit.
@pjc858 Now if you can remind me how many cups detroit has won since this goal?? More than your precious av's...oh and what place did your av's end up at this year.....hmmm....29th overall LOL!! ;-)
@pjc858H Can you remind me as a Wings fan what happened in 97 and 2002 and 2008? I think i remember a 7-0 game 7 from somewhere and I think i remember Detroit winning the cup in 97, 98, 2002 and 2008 oh and in 2008 we swept you, so u can have the 96 playoffs, and 29th in the league in 2011 is quite an accomplishment.
I still don't get why this goal is so celebrated. Yes, it was Stevie Y in Game 7 double OT. But the Red Wings won 62 games that year. They should've swept the Jets in the first round and the St. Louis Blues in the 2nd round and eventually win the cup. They shouldn't have even been in this position to begin with.
And oh, they got eliminated by the Avalanche in the next round.
@Gustavobarbosa7 The L.A. Kings traded him midseason to St. Louis. He became a free agent at the end of the season and signed with the New York Rangers.
I LOVE HOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR IT CLANG OFF THE INSIDE BAR AND ROCKET BACK OUT LEAVING NO QUESTION OF JUST HOW MUCH IT COUNTED NO DISPUTE WHATSOEVER STEVIE Y ..I MET HIM AT THE GARDENS WHEN I WAS 13 TO GIVE HIM A PLAQUE I MADE FOR HIM IN WOODSHOP AND TO MY SUPRISE HE NOT ONLY ACCEPTED IT BUT INVITED ME ON THE REDWINGS BUS TO GET A FEW MORE AUTOGRAPHS ILL NEVER AS LONG AS I LIVE FORGET THAT AND TO ME BESIDES MARIO LEMIEUX IS THE BEST OF ALL TIME LOVE YOU STEVIE !!!!!!
@nhl10dnfwin Thats not what 1997 told me. SWEEP SWEEP SWEEEP. The Flyers were heavily favored in that series to and they still got raped like a little school girl.
@cursedlemon That's one of my biggest pet peeves. Idiots that do stuff like that on hockey broadcasts. I just don't understand what they get out of it. Are they that desperate to get their fat faces on TV for a split second? Do they just think it's funny to annoy everyone trying to watch the game? I've seen people do this over and over and over for an entire hockey game. They probably missed half the game because they kept turning around. Why go if you're just going to do that? Assholes.
I remember it was like 1 in the morning or something when it ended. It was really late and I was watching when I should've been sleeping because I had to work the next day.
@gannable Yeah it's also too bad we destroyed the Flyers the next year too eh lol...also too bad the Flyers haven't won a Cup since the 70's. Yeah, just too bad lol
@media401 I suppose Yzerman hurting his knee was the best thing that happened to the Wings at that point. Because of the Avs upset of the Wings and Lemieux smashing Draper's face against the board we got the Wings/Avs rivalry, one of the best in sports. Make me miss the 90's.
steve yzerman and shanahan were the best pair of offense and defensive ive ever seen...i just wish yzerman didnt retire though that is what i think the held the team up for the stanley cup wins when yzerman was captin
Unfortunately, injuries late in his career forced him to reitre ealrier than he wanted, otherwise he could have played until he was 50 he love hockey that much. A total class act. WHAT a hockey player. He'll be just as good a GM for some lucky team out there.
@AbbathGS yeah i belive he was about 10 or so goals away from the 700 club, and i wish he the best i luck in Tampa but hopefull he will be the Wings GM one day
@AbbathGS yeah i belive he was about 10 or so goals away from the 700 club, and i wish he the best i luck in Tampa but hopefull he will be the Wings GM one day
Gretzky with the turnover. funny shit .. I remember I had school the next morning so i missed the 2nd OT .. my dad left me a note outside my room that read "Stevie scores double OT." so awesome.

I still don't understand how a team that had Gretzky, Fuhr, and a lot of other great players couldn't get it done.
Lol, St. Louis will NEVER get a cup.
