@ogredm From the fact that he picks the final chord completely open, I'm gonna say it's an open tuning. Open D maybe...or DADGAD (though it sounds more minor, so it might have an F# in there somewhere)
@ogredm From lowest to highest pitch the tuning is DADAAD. As for why it sounds minor, in one of the persistent raga melodies he plays a flat seventh which gives things a minor sound, but even more than that is his vocals which are clearly blues influenced.
after a VERY shitty week.. i was listening to this album on my ipod on the way home from work on the bus, (after my car blew its clutch.. one of the many shitty things happened this week).. it depressed the hell out of me.
but it left me thinking "fuck it.. and fuck em all"

I got in a small town jam, so they put a rifle in my hand, to go over and kill the yellow man- powerful! this is the heartfelt, emotional, darker version that was not the "POP" radio version I heard in the 80's on the radio... long live the Boss, he is a great story teller, this is music, not the crap that is mainstream today
Although the meaning is frequently misconstrued, I believe this *is* a patriotic song in a way. Refusing to forget the people who fought and died for your country, and those who survived but lost their jobs and homes, is a million times more patriotic than flag-waving and pretending everything is ok.
@Lithorseman Don't quote me but I think the bottom strings are in drop D but the top are in G. I was told this a while back, but I haven't verified it.
I don't think Bruce was trying to encourage the troops when he wrote this song. Actually, he felt ashamed and dissapointed by the Vietnam and other wars and this was an ANTI-WAR tune. He fought against the wrong sense you all gave to his song for many years, but it seems he didn't convince all of you yet...
My favorite version of this song. When it first came out in the 80's I was working in Australia. Brick workers a couple floors up on scaffolding playing the song full blast and sing to all of us in the street. Great memory, great song great country. Australia rocks like no other.
It sort of says it all. It's more than acceptable to feel ashamed of a government that sends eighteen year old "boys" with so much life ahead of them to kill people they've never met, in a country they've never been to. Disillusioned, Disenfranchised, and Dismembered.
This song will turn any muslim into an america loving, middle eastern hatin redneck
