The sentences today are not severe. Think of it as this: "I'll go rape a child anyday, even If I go to jail I'll be charged or life sentenced. So whats the big deal?" In Alaska age of consent is 16. I believe rape is wrong, but just saying, it's not wrong to have sex under 18 with someone who isn't. It's even legal in the US.
