  • Thank You so much for pointing out that in the gospel industry's eyes if you cant do runs like Dorinda Clark Cole or J moss then you cant sing... I appreciate it a lot...

  • @sevaryus1324 You are most welcome!

  • this video was perfect lol....you poinedt out some critical points on how singers judge each other

  • @wccymbal Thank you so much!

  • I study the greats to build and maintain the gift u have. Too, understanding why, what they did and how it was done allows u to incorporate different techniques into ur own original style. Nothing is new under the sun but strive for new neway

  • "The next time I visit the critical person's channel and they can't stay on pitch for more than 15 seconds." (pause and glare)....That cracked me up!...LOL..Seriously, though I appreciate your message here. It is so true.

  • @shawnglemon HAHAHA...thank you!!!!

  • I most def agree with you!!! 1000% many people don't realize all of this either!!!! Def like this video!!!

  • @VOFLilDrummaGurl Thank you so much!

  • You know, people like Stevie Wonder listened to other singers and copied runs/riffs...there's nothing bad with learning from the greats. But I also agree with what you are saying

  • @Musiqsoulchildish My point was not that we shouldn't learn from the greats...It is when we begin to mimic the greats and sound like carbon copies of the greats that the problem arises! Thanks for watching!

  • God bless you man i need that!! I wish more artist thought this way!!..lol..

  • @darkvaper2010 God bless you too! Thank you!

  • I agree man tell it like it is,There is no one like Wanya Morris he's perfect, lol.

  • @DF20BT LOL...thank you!

  • For real man.

  • LMBO @ running a lot doesn't show greatness...It shows WHACKNESS!! Soooooo true!!!

  • @kurtisgirlpinky You know what's up...lol!

  • Preach! great video and I completely agree with you

  • I totally agree. Sometimes, these days I can't tell who sings what songs. They all sound so much alike. I def beleive that originality is key

  • Originality is key...you hit it on the head!

  • REAL TALK man preach it

  • Thank you!

  • brandy was the first person who started that winy/run tone...she's so dope but now everybody sounds like her, lol.

  • Well Said Bro! Mad Love and Respect

  • Thanks man!

  • youu aree abosolutlyyy right on thisss.!

    iagreeee 100%

  • Thank you! Glad I have people who support my opinion!

  • man, i totally agree with you. here in detroit, if you dont sound like the karens, dorendas, jmosses, and so on people say "they alright, they cant sang. they can sing"

    i feel ya 100 percent!!!

man you have an awesome voice. that is from a vocalist. keep up the good work,

  • Thank you so much! Bless!

  • that is sooo true

  • i feel you on this!!!

  • Thank you! I feel you feeling me feeling you...lol!

  • you have a greaat voice...

and i feel that the unique singers(not the ones that always have the same type of singing-overdoing rifts and runs) are the ones that i love and respect the most...

  • AMEN sis!

  • BTW...thank you for the compliment! :o)

  • your very welcome =)

  • I think you articulated something I've thought for years. Personally I'm a fan of all the arists you mentioned. I love the dexerity by which the manipulate their voices. However, I can't listen that kind of singing for too long because at the end of the day its about the melody, texture and vocal intent. I've become a fan of artists/musicians who do more with less. Alot of these singers who mimic the burrell's&tonex's do so because they can't stay in tune. Or they have no voice of their own.

  • I'm glad you understand!

  • PREACH

  • Thanks!

  • One person who should stop doing runs is Christina Aguilera *bleh*

  • LOL...she does some interesting runs!

  • @TheTrinity101 Agreed.

  • Its good when you talk about things.

    Great.

  • Thanks!

  • Yasss I LIVE for Brandy's Runs

  • Yep she is sick wit it!

  • I agree... to a large extent, but, some of these artists (for a perfect example, Kim Burrell), didn't copy anyone. When you hear them, you hardly can find another singer that sounds close to them. Yes, they've HEARD riffs and runs but that doesn't necessarily meant they LEARNT them from vocalists before them. Example: I listen to some good singers and love them but I can do better runs than some of them.

I understand what you're saying though. It's true: aspiring vocalists must not seek to copy

  • Thank you so much! I want to clarify, however, I never said Kim Burrell copied anyone in this video! I said people copy Kim Burrell! Sorry for the misunderstanding!

  • i agree partially i dont think you should copy others but i do thik its good to learnfrom others there is a girlshe is on youtube ( YALL NEED TO CHECK HE OUT @ CHANDRA SINGING HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ASHLEY DOSS) but any way alot of people hear her and name kim and karen b and jazmine you know the greats & i do feel shes influnced by them but a copycat thats hard for me to say because truthfly i think she top all to me and many others shes the best in the world yall need to watch

  • i agree 100%

  • I like to do runs a lot because runs were one of the first things I learn't how to do when I started singing because I listened to artist like Whitney, Destinys Child and Usher so they sort of come naturally, and I do still go and watch videos of certain artists such as Karen, Beyonce etc. and see what I can apply and adapt to my vocals. However at the same time I use runs as and when appropriate.

  • Karen clark Sheard right........well that girl go the best runs and riffs i know

  • Me too, you was gonna say everything that i was gonna say.

  • Well, I'm glad I did! Thank you for watching!

  • SAY IT!!!!!!

  • Well that is interesting! I never heard her say that but I understand how you feel!

  • mimicking is one thing...but you have to be able to incorporate a number of different styles into your music....its not even about runs...its placement....

Kim was certainly not the first to run...ELLA...Sarah Vaughn, Al Jereau....its all about putting things together and making your own style

  • Thank you for watching! That wasn't what this video was about! This was concerning those who believe runs make you a great singer! It is about balance! The tone of someones voice is more important than running on every word, IMO! I run myself but it is more important that I get the words out clear and that my runs make sense to the song not take over the song or the message! Also, this wasn't about Kim per se! I just brought up certain artists that other artists adore in this day and age!!

  • i'm so happy i came across your video..i use to mimic karen clark, and now i'm glad to know i should be happy with my own style..but i see alot of people who get exited about runs and walk out on someone who doesn't do them often..thanks..god bless you

  • I'm so happy you found your style! It is sad people will walk out on good singing just because of runs!

  • I effinatley agree with everything mr EA said. There are ppl out here that make rude comments on ppls voices that dont even sing. ppl that dont know about how the voice works, the parts of the voice, dont have a musical ear or never had experience with singers or being around them to kno. i've had someone recently try to tell me things about my voice that cant even sing. terminology use all wrong ! its funny how ppl that dont kno what they're talkin about are quick to try to say sum sh@t.

  • Thank you so much! It is so true! Too many people like to talk but never really listen! Too many teachers and not learners!

  • How are you. i miss hearing from you.. what you been up to bud? love this vid.. great message..

  • I am wonderful! How are you? Life is great! Just singing, loving and living! Thank you for stopping through and for watching! Miss hearing from you too! Let's change this! ;-)

  • Hey EA! Glad to hear you're still singing. Keep up the great work!

  • Thank you man! Good to hear from you!

  • I so agree with you, EA! The Riffs and runs all sound the same on virtually every artist out there today. You are an original and keep being an original and being you, that is what will make you more sucessful and give you creative integrity that will last you a lifetime. Much love in music, bruh!

  • Thank you so much! I will do my best!

  • I understand where u coming from

u made valid points, i think a good singer doesnt have to run

but its also about Control if u dont have no type of control on your voice.. why bother..

just keep doin u.. and not worry about others say cause everyone has opinions about everything so brush it off

anyways I enjoyed the video of A Capella (The song I wrote for Brandy.) Thanx for ur rendition keep it up

  • Thanks TC! I appreciate the love! Lots of opinions come with the territory so that doesn't worry me! :D My main point was to be original...whatever that is! We have one of Kim Burrell, Brandy, et cetera! We don't need another! I agree about control but you can show control through not running too!

  • I agree.. but I was talking about control over all.. runs or not

alotta people that are able to run .. can not hold a straight note

some can.. and its the type of control that some people have

I think everyone does music different

So runs or not.. Control is the main thing (For me)

I cant listen to someone who's off pitch most of the time

thats just me and we all think differently

I know im inspired by Brandy as many are.. By far a copy cat.. but singing to me is control & tone

  • I definitely feel you and totally agree! Thank you for your input and for sharing your gift with all of us! I, for one, appreciate you and what you have offered and will offer the world! Bless bro!

  • BTW...I don't think you are a copy cat! You learned from Brandy as all of us have but you don't try to change your voice to sound like hers! You use the voice you have!

If only you knew how many ladies I've heard whose tone, runs, et cetera sound just like Kim Burrell...

  • OMG...you can't even tell the difference! But you listen to them three years ago and they sounded completely different!

If you are on a track I know it's you! I don't question if it's Brandy or Tonex or Tevin!

  • Thank you for your thoughts on A Capella! You did an amazing job on it! I may redo it at some point! It was my first time using a mac and the harmonies got lost or messed up in the mix! I'm not an engineer but I'm trying and have gotten a little better...lol!

Enjoy being home with moms! Bless brotha!

  • What's an e-baller? haha.

I don't get why people write such rude comments. You have an amazing talent. It makes me mad to think that people write things on your videos that aren't deserved.

  • LOL...E-baller is someone who thinks they are all that and a bag of chips while on the internet and goes around making unnecessary comments to make others feel awful, all the while, doing so to make themselves feel better about the horrid life in which they lead!

The comment doesn't affect me ! Trust me, worse has been said and worse will be said! Thank you for your support Dina! Bless!

  • SIDE NOTE: This video concerns something I always say in Idol Search --being an original! As long as you sing well and are true to yourself no matter how different and never limit yourself, I am appreciative! Singing well is not done in only one way! And talent should never be limited! That is my thing!

  • EA, I love and can appreciate your style of music! Keep being UNIQUE!

    Much love,

    Camillia

  • Thank you Camillia! You know I love you and your voice! When we gonna do this long awaited video? Hmmm...

  • It's coming EA..LOL! I know I have been saying this for 6months now....lol. I love you back MAN!

  • I totally agree EA! Be original and unique like God made you! Runs do not make a great vocalist too me. It's your tone , your dictions..and pitch that makes you a good vocalist. I listen to all types of music...Let me use an example...Celine Dion...doesn't do any runs hardly and her voice is sooooo powerful she has so much clarity and richness and she's an awesome vocalist to me! If you're able to do runs when you sing it just add flavor to your tone. Just be you... every1 cant be the same!

  • I LOVE ME SOME CELINE SIS!!! I'm glad you understand where I'm coming from because so many do not!

  • I sent you a message....But I wanna say is your 100% right. You know your stuff and you think just like me. But I have people I talk to and who are artists.....and they have the same mindset that they have to sound and have a style like the people they idolize...its a shame...Originality is soo limited now in people....

  • Thank you Sir Q! It truly saddens me to know that so many folk are stuck sounding like other people and will never find his/her true sound! So many are too scared to be original so they would rather mimic and be accepted than be vulnerable and just be! It cn be scary but that is what growing in musicianship is all about! Test the waters and have no regrets while doing so!

  • You sing well ......I enjoy your gift .....stay blessed

  • Thanks man! This video isn't about how I sing though! At least that isn't why I posted it! This video is about the idea of what makes singing great to most people, why, and why runs are seen as the most important thing to many vocalists nowadays? What do you think?

  • I like all kinds of music and when it comes to riffs and runs I think some singers use them too much .........songs should communicate an emotion or message and sometimes this is lost with too much of what can be a good thing ........I guess that makes sense ....still enjoy your singing .

  • I totally agree! :D

  • Thanks so much, for the encourgement, so y dont u, look at the ones I have posted, even tho I play most the time, but tell me what u think.. Thanks so much again for ur time n encourgement...

  • I will check them out! :D

  • Like this video, thats why I dont post vids, cuz I know I dont sound like everyone us, but I am different... Nice I feel ya

  • Well that is why you should post videos because you don't sound like everyone! Don't let folks put you in a box and only ask the opinions of vocalists you respect and whose ears you trust! Thanks for watching and get to posting! :D

  • Great video!

However, I don't think riff/runs make a good singer - look at great singers of the past such as Etta James, Kim Weston, Sarah Vaughan, Dina Washington, Marvin Gaye...they didn't need riffs and runs to kill a song! lol.

However, riffs and runs are still great and YOU k n o w how to do em reeeeaaal goood!!!

  • THAT's what the point of my video was...lol! Did you get confused? Runs/Riffs DO NOT make a singer great!!! That was the whole point of the video!

  • LOL sorry. I kinda got that message -

  • No need to apologize! I was just worried you didn't understand me! I didn't want you to leave this video with the wrong impression of me! :D

  • I dont know why I put "however" as it implied that I was disputing something. Sorry =D

  • It's cool bro! Again, thank you for watching! :D

  • Hey sweets i just luv ur response 2 that person's critic on ur vocals it was done in such a classy way and respectful way and it was a very mature approach..U go boy and i listened 2 ur voice and their was nothin wrong with ur vocals at all!

  • Aww...thank you! I wasn't really trying to respond to the critic! I was presenting a topic that needed to be discussed! I don't care if they ever watch it...lol! Thanks again!

  • You are awesome.. you don't have just an astonishing voice, but a great way of thinking too.. I enjoy listening to you, as I enjoyed reading the ten commandments. LOL :)

    Keep safe.

  • Thank you so much! LMAO @ the ten commandments! There are 11! Shhh...don't say such things! I may get beat up with Bibles...lol!

  • ATTENTION: This video wasn't done because I need a confidence boost or am worried about a blanket statement made by a silly girl! I believe in myself and the talent God has given me! It was done to remind people of what true artistry is in case they forgot or never knew!

As far as the moment in the video where I thought about why she said what she said, I always do that! :D You can't become better if you don't listen to others! That doesn't mean try to appease everyone but at least listen!

  • you are a great artist no matter what other people say. you sing very very good!

  • Aww...Thank you again for always supporting me! :D No worries though! I am in no way worried about what others say!

  • Well, thank you! You know I'm not worried about that or that deaf person! I just needed to speak about this subject matter for folks who are confused!

  • I know ;-)
