An outstanding rhythm section! I heard Sebastiaan Cornelissen with Gary Husband on keys, a monster drummer himself, and a bass player named Frans Vollink. Vollink's album is named One Spirit, Cornelissen's album is named Uturn, both are highly recommendable
I've been into progressive/fusion jazz since the mid-1970s, plus I'm a drummer so I tend to be drawn to heavy, progressive base line music, especially when accompanied with phenom drumming... Gary freakin' BRINGS IT!! ...and his drummers too!! I really dig the cat on this vid... Tight Groove, rim slappin', bass drum funk zen master!! ...THANKS, idontcarewatuthink for posting this!
The "Sebastian" guy is Sebastiaan Cornelissen, a very fine Dutch drummer. He has a new record coming out on Abstract Logix in May, 2010 with some all-star fusion players.
No one will ever be "better" than Jaco, got a time machine so they can go back and be first where he was first,? for starters !better? you still playing that game little fellow? get into music for the right reasons for fuck sake.
there are many guys out there now that are better than Jaco I admit Jaco Like Jimi Hendrix where inovators but the new generation of bass players took the game a ran with it .
Williis has some unique ways of doing things if you've every watch some of his instructional videos.
His right hand plucking, ramp, theory on how hard to play etc..
It all seems to work for him.
Although his right hand technique looks fairly hard to master, I at least think it's gotten many bassists to play with more than their index and middle fingers.
Using the thumb and the other 3 or 4 fingers can make some usually difficult passages to play much easier.
Jaco had the opportunity to play a five string and was never tempted from his J bass. Marcus Miller Jeff Berlin and Victor Wooten still do most of their playing on a four string as well. Also, its had to think any bass player in this idiom is not touched by Jaco in some small way.
Well according to me, Gary Willis is one of the only guys on this planet who are on the same level as Pastorious, and even took it a bit further if you ask me.
An under-appreciated bassist. It's easy to hear that he's very much influenced by Jaco. If Jaco were alive and sober he'd probably be playing a signature five string fretless too.
I've seen Gary a couple of times, met him even... saw millions of clips of him live... but have never seen him without a ball cap on! Ha... He rules though
whether one acknowledges it or not, GW is one badass mofo bassiologist whose playing, like so many others, without question, comes from the jaco time space continuum...to say there is "no jaco" in his playing is as absurd as saying there is no such thing as the "jaco school of bass playing"...(groan)
Every good bassist should study Jaco just like Gary did and so many others, its normal we sound jaco-ish sometimes caus hes the one that started it all
Totally different style, totally different technique (palm muting - never heard by Jaco). Just because it's a fretless it doesn't mean it's a Jaco clone.
BTW: Do you scream 'Jamerson' when you hear Billy Sheehan?? ;-)
It's the Gary Willis technique. Seriously - he plays like no one else. It's a little of both. It's also the bass. Check out his site for more info. He has an extensive section on technique.
Jaco pastorius, without question. another fretless player to watch is a former student of his named micheal manring, who does alot of cool stuff with altered tunings.
he has to work on his dancing lol!!

Gary is an amazing bass player. sadly he doesn't get the attention he deserves.
I think of him as a sort of modern Jaco. I think he studied Jaco and yet he created his own voice on the instrument. And that is masterful.
