Roller skates from the 60s were made of metal and were "1 size fits all" by being in 2 parts, the front and the back. Each pair came with a key which, once the two sliding parts were adjusted to fit your foot, lengthwise, was inserted into the side and turned til the bracket closed around the sides, keeping the front and back from sliding apart. If you lost the key, you couldn't use the skates anymore.

The song is talking about quad skates, which are fastened by a screw. The key that is talked about is possibly the screw to adjust the skates. Probably and innuendo for sexual intercourse.
I love this song! I saw them last night! They were one of the warm up bands for Bowling For soup! I felt privileged to be at their first ever time they've played in the UK!
so this is a stab in the dark but..does anyone know who did i cover of this version its from like the 90's and it was on some kids cd? probably not but i thought id try..
You didn't upset me. :) I actually like the version Rasputina did. O: But it's okay. I think really if it was between the three, I would definitely choose Rasputina's version and the original version over this one.
Melanie, the original singer-songwriter, denied sexual overtones, but . . . um . . . most people think they are pretty overt! But, either way, whether a hymn to roller skating or to the Sexual Revolution, it's a fun song and the Dollyrots cover is great.
to get skates on and off, one needed a "key" that had a wrench like thing at the end. That is what the song is about. Look at alecwally23's video for visuals.
@4reyrey4 in the 70's i think, rollerskates needed a key to wind them up, i dont really know what for, i wasnt alive then haha, but yeah, since this song is originaly form the 70's it makes sense.
@spicycello actually the older version of roller skates, were the kind that you put on and attach to your sneakers. they had a key to lock them on your shoes,if you lost the key you had to basically rip your shoes off and break your skates....so as she is singing i got a brand new pair of roller skates you got a brand new key...its like her saying i cant live without you,as in we make a great pair.;..
@J8neSez thanks! that sounds cool, i wish we still had that, so you dont have to buy giant clunky boots haha! that makes more sense than "winding them up" yeah, i didnt understand it when my mom explained it.
@4reyrey4 It's about sex. You just need to put it all together. This is a fun update but certainly not as good as the original. Thanks for keeping it alive.
WOHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOim so excited!!!!!!!!!!!! people!!!!!!!!!yeah
The original one version of this song I first heard when I was about 6 years old. It is such a fun song. Melanie did a great job, but this group is the only other I've heard to even come close to doing this great song justice. I love the acoustical and radio original version of this song. I also think this version deserves to be on the radio. I'm very impressed. Excellent job!
I'd like to personally thank Jaguar on this one, I'm tired of all the comments I get about how people hate the song. If you dont like it, why are you commenting about how you dont like it? Do you think you're going to change someones opinion on the song, I doubt that. Once again thanks Jaguar, we need more people like you.
Exactly, I mean you are just wasting your time watching if you don't like the song. I think they did a great job and prefer their version over the original, but that is just me, it's all personal preference.
yh same here the origional version is alright but i like this one so much better. dont know why though? lol. it might be her voice with the guitars? who knows =3
I think it is the background instruments that does it for me. The original is just her with her guitar, I feel the other instruments and the more rock version of it is more attractive to me than just one person singing it.
Yeah i didn't either until i once looked the song up on wikipedia and found out the original singer and songwriter was a folk singer named Melanie Safka. it was also called the rollerskate song or something like that, i don't like how the original sounds but just type in Melanie Safka - brand new key
r.i.p. ryan dunn, sont know why this song reminds me of him lol
