  • in soviet russia boat gybe you

  • У нас в России говорят - лучшие шкипера - дома на диване с ноутбуком на пузе))))

In Russia we say - the best skipper - home on the couch with a laptop on the belly))))

  • Ah, the problems of shifting ballast, as spoken of in numerous publications....Still, the boat didn't capsize, only laid on its side...

Still, to claim the crew "inexperienced"...I don't know...

  • at 0:33 it looks like there was a mistake to turn the wheel towards starboard.

Scary situation, but one should be prepared how to act, not discuss...

  • tense

  • The boys thought that they were going to take a walk a little bit ... random people are together ... This is not the crew ... a6km you said correctly - they are talking to much!

    " give me a knife" - the best joke......lol

  • and also allow them to do 40 knots in the southern ocean

  • They have swing keels, which right them

  • does anyone know how to right the boat? if there's no steerage and the wind is blowing at the same direction.

  • @johnchang7 you release the main and let the keel do its job that boat probably had to lower its second keel to right it self and yes they do have two

  • someone said that these keels move? releasing the main would just drop it in the water. i don't really see what good that's going to do.

  • it dumps the air it dosnt seem like it would do much but it does

  • @pg911a5 they do not have two keels, they have a canting keel which let them have the keel on the windward side of the boat, thus when the boat gybed, the keel was still on the other side, causing them to capsize, they eased the sails and moved the keel to the windward side which enabled them to level the boat and get going again.

  • @xylady2 you are correct but they do have a dagger board that is retractable google volvo open 70 and youll see

  • up in the puffs down in the lulls...jesus...didn't they teach you anything? hahaa kidding hope everyone stayed on board.

  • 1. it can happen anytime when too much of too much is all around.

    2. Communication:No one can hear you

    3. No one felt overboard. (very deadly at this point)

    4. It take a lot of discipline and courage to put the boat back to its feet.

    5. Great work!

  • Ha ha ha... Nick: Yeah yeah, everybody is working! Great going guys. I hope you can make the whole race next time.

  • amazing teamwork, very nice video

  • Comment removed

  • In that much wind, you can't hear anyone more than 3 feet away.

  • great video !

  • To the folks that talk out of place about sailing in the the stink, you are not sailors and please withhold comment. Парус на команде Россия!

  • agreeed it looks lame watching the action from a desk that is sitting still!

  • sorry, bro that was my dads comment.

  • in holland we have a saying; the best skippers stand on shore....

  • hmm ... i wonder if that could be a reason for the dutch not being too good at sailing?

  • that could be one of the dumbest things i've ever seen

  • that could be one of the dumbest things anyone could say

  • you tard

  • @Macsheap 'cause we know better. No need to go on the wet seas to pee our pants...when we can do it on dry land!

  • Can anybody tell me why this is caled chinese gybe? I guess, if you do this with a junk, you meet the fish.

    Can anybody translate "ThirdChina"´s comment?

  • wikipedia that, the explanation is kinda confusing.

  • coz the boom points down into the water. Down to China.

  • Canting keel can be tricky once a while. Especially when gybing accidetally

  • Crazy gybe

  • 一些傻逼的中国人还在他妈的幻想中俄友好。中国货船都被炸掉了。死了那么多人

  • what is the helmsman shouting?

"get the ...." anyone understanding him?

  • give me a knife!

  • I would just like to know what cause this gybe.

  • They are in a strong wind and the keel is canted way out on the starboard side (in these boats you can move the keel ). They sail into a trough , at the bottom of a wave , and the wind goes ,stopped by the surrounding seas . In an ordinary keel boat it just comes upright but in this it gets pushed right over because of the canting keel and they are pinned down They then have to let go the keel so that it swings down under the boat, the boat comes upright and off they go again .

  • i thought that they nosedived into another wave and as the boat slows down and the apparent wind angle moves back and the main wasn't eased that much because they were surfing down the swell ... they gybed ... but this is not a classic chinese bang bang ... it is a shame that they are out of the race for the moment.

  • If the wind does not balance the effect of the canting keel then the boat will fall over as here.If as you say it has piled into the wave ahead the wind flow over the sail is destroyed by the slow down and the boat falls over. Yes I think that would happen. My experience has been in a normal keel boat that the boat starts climbing the wave ahead ,the wind flow over the sail is destroyed and the boat lurches upright.the wave behind pushes the stern round and you get a classic broach

  • As a sailing ignoramus, and yet a recent religious convert, I'd like to ask someone to explain what's actually going on.

  • Accidental Jibe and subsequent mini-broach of the boat, it can be very dangerous as you can lose a mast or get broadsided by a wave if you don't right the boat quickly enough. Happens quite often in the Southern Oceans.

  • So does the jibe happen the moment the boom swings from port to starboard or is it earlier when they get in the trough? Thanks for the answer, by the way!

  • poor guys

  • Que temporallllll

  • Buena galleta!! yeeeeha

  • Arrghh a knockdown is the scary stuff, these guys are made of steel!!

  • At the very end, did he say "mate, whatever you do, I don't want another jibe."

  • I heard "whatever you do, don't go out without a harness". Good advice considering!

  • very late for easing the main traveller and

they are really lucky for not breaking the mast:)

  • the old windward runner prevents it from going out any further. they have to get the new runner on before they ease the old one otherwise they break the rig

  • Do you mean the old windward backstay? Why mast should be broken if you would have immediately eased the old windward backstay? In my opinion, as soon as the main does not work (means does not pull forward), then the mast is at now risk without any backstay. Baskstay holds the mast from being pulled forward to the bow.

  • One more notice. They speak too much. It may be possible in my crew of weekend racers. But these guys racing on the highest possible level. Everybody shut up and do their job. (This is just the consideration. Made the same way as I do while Beckham doing the mistake on the football ground :-))

  • that's why they talk so much. Inexperienced crew is quiet and that is dangerous because you don't know what is going on in their heads ..... and if there is a fuck up and everybody keeps quiet you don't know what are they up to. Experienced guys talk and then everybody knows what is going on.

  • absolutely right, even on dinghy's the best teams talk through every manouver, if they aren't talking tactics. quiet sailing is bad

  • i agree, our sailing team are constantly talking between crews, between boats, everyone always knows exactly whats going on, if there was silence we would probably end up messing our own tactics up !!

  • Yes the mast must be very strong and I suppose the keel is out the wrong side so someone has to winch it up to bring the boat upright.

  • What actually happened :O

  • Wow, that's jet fighter stuff. This is so extreme the way they push these boats. Must be super tough for the media crew to keep filming in these situations and not put the camera down and help out. But because of that we get this fantastic footage!! Keep it coming.

  • It isnt camera crew its mounted carmeras

  • It is both mounted and crew-held camera. Each boat has a media crew member dedicated to filming on this race.

  • chaud!!!!

  • oh my God!!!

  • increlible !!!!! THEY STILL ALIVE !!!

  • que me voyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!

  • AWESOME!NOT FOR THEM BUT FOR ME.
