He is aiming this video at people like me, hobby woodworkers who don't have a drill press or a mortising machine. Using a mortising machine chisel would speed me up. I've seem demos with routers cutting mortises but I don't care for it. I may make horizontal boring machine though.
Your timing is impeccable, I just bought a drill press two weeks ago. I may also buy a mortising attachment to go w/ it, thanks.
I'm sure you can see that I wrote my comment as a rebuttal to all the negative comments that had been made. I've watched most of Noho's videos & think he's very sharp guy. I just couldn't see him getting beaten up without saying something.
@deezynar no problem, I'm used to doing it by hand, but I splurged on some lie nielsen mortising chisels, and it helps to put a square block as backing to keep your chisel perfectly vertical and perpidinular to the work surface. And I agree completely, I've seen some of his videos and he seems pretty sharp
Blunt drill. Centering guage is good; an old idea but good. You can make a centering plate for a router with two pegs on it. Does the same thing and centers the cutter. You're hitting a Hollow-Chisel Mortice bit with a Mallet! Wouldn't it be quicker and more accurate if you fit the chisel in a morticing machine?
this did people 500 years before....

@deezynar
If you have a drill press there are mortising chisel setups that are pretty inexpensive that work quite well
