@shaithis60 I guess you're right. It just seems that usually cities pick one airport and stick with it. So much has happened at Stapleton that it brings back great memories. We don't get very big planes at DIA such as DC-10 any more, just 737s and a320s.
Nice video of Stapleton International airport! That airport closed in 1995 due it needed more space! I wish They could keep this airport!!!!! Nice video!!!!!
Oh, man! This was filmed around the time we used to change planes at Denver on our flights from Pheonix to Omaha! Cant believe its gone now. I especially enjoyed seeing the old Frontier 737s with the orange and white logo again. Makes me feel like I'm 16 again and on vacation. Thanks so much for posting.
Tell me how that's ridiculous? There is no more gate space at DIA. There was a whole concourse and a half empty at Stapleton for the last several years it was in operation. So explain how its ridiculous?
@exitwest I agree with exitwest! I'm glad they built the new airport. The new airport is larger, has more space for building into the future, and I imagine isn't too much of a nuisance to nearby homeowners.
wow i remeber thats the time americans could fly all over the country at decent rates with out geting fist fucked at the airport. nor wating decades for your flight to arive. Oh and you could acctualy take your babies food on board without the paranoids thinking it a wepon of mass destruction, ya ok go gerber! it will soon rule the world...We live in very sad times indeed.
LOL, this is nice footage but I have to laugh 'cos I think the music in the beginning is also what the "Hot For Words" YouTube lady uses...I guess she is using the same editing software :)
@devan465 the difference was that it was closer to Downtown Denver and the major highways. Not 20+ miles out where you now have to take a toll road to get to DIA. Also, I like to think the days of Stapleton was before the Denver area and areas along the 36 corridor between Denver and Boulder got built up. I remember nothing but countryside back in the eighties. Now it is all urban sprawl. Flying into the Denver area post Stapleton would actually throw me off balance.
@devan465 when I say off balance, I might have passed through or flown through Denver from 1998 on not knowing my first time around that Stapleton no longer existed. Personally I think DIA looks great and would seem to be an improvement sparing neighborhoods that were around the original airport. I suppose one of these days the land where the original airport was built could always be redeveloped as an aux airport, then again fat chance of that ever happening.
@devan465 Well I don't know much about Stapleton Airport. I know much about DIA because DIA is a big airport I ever see when I first fly out to San Diego in March 2006- 4 1/2 years.
@SDMullis Thanks for the quick answer, and thanks for posting this vid. Do you by chance remember or have any video of Denver Beech from the eighties?
I don't really remember Stapleton seeing as I was pretty young when it closed, but DIA is incredible and the best airport I've ever been to! And one creepy thing...the control tower from Stapleton is still standing out by itself abandoned! Kinda cool I think...
Back in the days when just about everyone flew big jets everywhere. Will never be like that again. I miss the days when you could actually hear jetliners coming and going.
Wow. :) I used to go through Stapleton as a kid on United from the 70s until about 1983, when the now-defunct Western Airlines became the cheapest ticket to Hawai'i...and then got gobbled up by Delta. xD Really cool retro vid, thanks. Hey, lookit the old Braniff 727, now THAT's a long time gone!
Thankyou for posting this. I used to fly into Denver Beech back in the eighties. The airport is gone, but I will always have those fond memories. This helps them remain with me. Thanks again.
I miss those Stapleton days. I was there the last day it was opened. The last flight out was Continentals DC-10 flight from Denver to Paris. I will always remember Stapleton 1929-1995!!!
That was the problem. They didn't have any room for extra runways. The residential areas surrounding Stapleton were already complaining about the noise, and more runways would make them have a fit.
Although Stapleton was a fantastic airport and I had numerous landings there, it was fate that Denver needed a new airport. Besides, DIA has the space to expand the concourses and the six runways should be plenty for the next few decades. Thus, DIA will outlive Stapleton by at least 30 years.

@flydude1063
- inadequate separation between runways, leading to extremely long waits in bad weather
- little or no room for other airlines that proposed/wanted to use Stapleton for new destinations
- a lawsuit over aircraft noise, brought by residents nearby Park Hill
- legal threats by Adams County to block a runway extension into Rocky Mountain Arsenal lands
- traffic congestion that was building up on the Quebec exit
So no, that airport wouldn't have been "fine"

I miss Stapelton. I first moved to Denver in 1993 and my roomate and I
would drive over to Havanna St. and watch jets fly right over our heads.
I miss those days!

Wasn't that Braniff something? Was in the final "ultra" scheme likely with the Halston interior.

Man, it sucks they teared it down. They could of at least turned into a general aviation airport, like Centennial airport.

Didn't Stapleton have a taxiway and or runway that went over I-70 or some other major road? I think I remember taxiing over a highway there.
KCMDButcher42 2 years ago
Yeah, all they needed was an extra runway or two, and the airport would have been fine.
More gate space at Stapleton than at DIA. Sad it's gone.
