  • Wow!!! It's so beautiful to hear music without the aid of auto tune.

  • wow, i just jizzed on myself...

  • I like this song the best of all that I have heard by her so far. Boy, she is really great, and she was a major influence on Elvis Presley. I had never heard of her before I read that she so heavily influenced Elvis nor had I even heard her sing until about a year ago!

  • If B.B.King was the King of blues, She is the queen......

  • James Cotton is the harmonica players

  • I am so glad the You Tube posters put the Legends on here! The day has passed and we are left with the recordings of those who lead lead the way. There will never be anyone like Big Mama, Koko Taylor, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ma Rainey Those were the days my friends, didn't think they'd ever end....

  • I would say its James Cotton. That's right!

  • Big Mama is pretty good alright! Raw too, and in my view way better than Koko Taylor (with respect to the late Koko).

If Mama is playing the harmonica here, she's right up there with the the best of them. Better than Sonny Boy Williamson. Now that'll get a few of you going...!

  • i think there would be more singers in this generation that could sing like this or close to it if it hadnt been for the racism that forced many black artists to compromise their talent and skill to cross over and be accepted by white listeners...

  • Good lord, that is one incredible voice!!!

  • @AlAlekhine You're kidding right? janis sounds like a drunken lounge singer next to this woman. no disrespect to janis, because i like her as a human being, but, honestly, she couldn't stand on the same stage as this Goddess that you currently are privileged enough to be listening to.

  • Big Mama gonna rock me to my grave...then I'm goin' to blues heaven and she gonna rock me some more Goddammit !!

  • o my o my her voice is so unique.... so sad that she's past away... died on a bed with nobody around her.... thats so sad... for a woman so great... RIP big mama thornton

  • @ Bluesfreak1 Here i 'Metalfan' acknowledges i immediately recognise the feel of the sheer power! Koko Taylor is my greatest example.

Powerblues can 'pull stuff outta ya toes' aswell !

  • how can the blues be down? its the root of music ist pure its in all of us u must feel it

  • Big Mama often had guest harp players. Saw her 3-4 times in the 60's and once in early 70's. She was SO sexy

  • Thanks for posting this video!

    Powerful Minds of Women

  • anyone know who is the harmonica player???..love the sound of this song..who says the blues is down!!

  • Both James Cotton and Big Mama Thornton are listed as Harmonica players on this album. It could be one or both of them. Perhaps someone else will have a definite answer. And yes, this song rocks.

  • @12barsoul James Cotton on this song for sure. Tone is definitely his, and if recorded as played, harp is coming in over her voice.

  • @12barsoul I don't know ... to me this sounds like Junior Wells ...

  • @12barsoul Although both play harmonica that undeniably sounds like Cotton on this track.

  • @paultaussig She was quite accomplished at harmonica, so it's highly likely it is she herself who is playing. Wikipedia states: She was also a self-taught drummer and harmonica player, and frequently played each instrument onstage. (Like Prince.)

  • @paultaussig that's cotton :)

  • @paultaussig paul butterfield

  • This is how pure analog tone sounds like..

    Awesome.

  • THIS is what True Greatness ... sounds like, looks like, feels like! Who these days is anywhere near this good?

Joss Stone is carrying on the tradition!

  • @FanOfJanis i know you wrote this a yr ago, but in case you plan on coming back would you shut up about joss stone. i can't stand her thin reedy nasal-y voice and her faux soul. if you want to worship at the alter of js, do it on one of her pages.

  • elvis stole her song hounddog if you listen to the song you would see it was made for a women when she tells the man to stop barking at her door

  • no shit every white man stole songs from the black man or woman back then

  • estupenda mama

  • Amazing!!!!!!

  • Can anybody tell me if there's a female singer out there today that can compare to Big Momma, Koko Taylor or Etta James.

  • Bettye LaVette has the vocal chops, the attitude, and the experience. Check out her first "comeback" album "A Woman Like Me".

  • I always try to keep in mind that music is huge and I've never heard everyone...

So as for others...in a more modern vein there is Bonnie Raitt. Older versions are Ruth Brown (who did a great number with Bonnie) or Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday.

Patsy Cline is nice if you like Etta. Even certain songs by Annie Lennox can fit this group.

  • She is no longer with us , but check out the amazing Eva Cassidy's rendition of Stormy Monday here on youtube .

Totally different than Big Mama, but Eva is one of the best ever also .

Check out Irma Thomas , Marcia Ball , Joleen Mosser -they are all very good , but Big mama was decidedly in a league of her own - and wow - what an incredible harp player she was too .

  • Indeed, Eva's Stormy Monday is one of my favorites. She left this world too soon.

  • @doogleandalix Dont forget Lou Ann Barton. incredible stuff done early with Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Still with us and still belting them out just as furious as she did way back when.

  • @JinnyCarey

    Yes,

I have some of her stuff - she's very good too . Above I meant to say Jonell Mosser -sorry for the typo.

  • @doogleandalix Good lord thank you for bringing me back to Mama this morning! Ah, she's so amazing. Jonell Mosser, never heard of her, but I'll be looking her up, thanks! :-)

  • @doogleandalix lets not forget about Sister Rosetta Thorpe.

  • @TxKoyote

Just checked her out on Amazon - very good, but for some reason Big Mama's voice seems more " timeless' , whereas Sister Rosetta's seems dated . Also forgot to add Big Maybelle as another great singer to check out .

  • lol there is non. Most on the radio dont know how to sing from my generation. I so many times wish I wasnt born in the 80's. All we got is stupid music britny spears

  • Very few compare to these greats, maybe Queenie McCarter but that's about it I think.

  • @malberts1954 - There is only one Big Mama (Willie Mae) Thronton.

Forty years ago, there was Janis Joplin ... my personal fave.

    Today?

Young, beautiful, British, soul-singer extraordinaire ... Joss Stone.

Check out Joss Stone here on YouTube singing Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man" ... at The British Hall of Fame Music Awards" show.

To me, Joss is The Best today.

  • @malberts1954 no way! ladys are in a class by themselves...one day i hope my name would be mention with them.

  • i loves me some good blues and this is the best. thanks for posting.

  • SHe is bloody amazing! Elvis cannot compare... yes i will say it!

  • Smokin'! She definitely makes you sit up and listen, doesn't she?
