  • what a joke, 25 grand for this hare brained idea that clearly no one put any thought into. the problems are obvious, the kid probably blew all that money on pixie sticks

  • Please help Giving Elf receive funding to build a website to teach kids about giving to charity and help them raise money for charities. Voting is from March 1 to April 30 at refresheverything.ca. Sign up to receive a daily voting reminder at givingelf.ca

  • Ok 1.what kind of idiot(haha) couldehave devised this

2.the glare worry it's just gonna run busses off the road

3.$ they would cost a shitload to buy and install for what maybe 1 extra mpg?

4.weight itay be tough but that stupid piece of crap would just snap as soon as it goes over a bump with shitty school bus suspension

5.is it snows it's stuck on there for good it may ice up then it might break again

6.covering up access to the engine bay just fails

7.think about it there will be more sp

  • Give the guy a break he's a kid.

  • A better idea for a grand/idea would be to donate the money and have it used to upgrade the U.S's infrastructure.

  • pepsi cares a lot more about shoving their brand in your face than the gutter-dumb ideas they're throwing money away on

  • What a horrible idea this is. What's more important, negligible increases to fuel economy (buses are so heavy and so low speed it would basically amount to nothing)? Or maintaining some degree of visibility for bus drivers so that they don't run off of cliffs and kill bus loads of children? HUR DUR kind of a no brainer.

Sadly makes about as much sense as a lot of other things going on in the "green" movement.

  • Dont forget about glare. Both for the bus driver and everyone else.

How the heck do you clean your windshield? What about when it snows overnight and the windshield is iced up? You have to remove this shield to get into the engine bay?

Thats just a few of the huge flaws. I guarantee that this idea will not go anywhere. Good job funding a stupid idea. (Besides, did anyone see the commercial for this? This family has enough money to fund their own crap ideas)

    GreenShields=Fail

  • CRAZY I used to dance with that girl!!!

  • OH fyi, Coke is better.

  • lol this guy is a loser

  • Pepsi was so stupid to give this idea funding. First of all, what about the glare that it's going to cause? What about all the snow collecting that other people have mentioned? And how many school buses do a significant amount of highway driving where aerodynamics actually matter? Most of them are residential stopping-and-going. And unless you start adding sides there's going to be some significant turbulence from wind going underneath the shield and getting trapped. Sigh...

  • I PUT A PLEXIGLASS SHEET ON TOP OF MY BUS

    I AM A FUCKING GENIUS

  • @neogeon Pepsi had no other ideas so they had to use his. I just watched this commercial and it made my stomach churn.

    @frolfingforbudda Lmao.... 'nuff said. =]

  • thats the gayest shit ive ever heard in my life

  • it's obvious that a stupid idea like this would be "invented" by someone who doesn't drive. where was the thought of the glare given off the giant ridiculous piece into oncoming traffic? 1 mpg gain? big deal. maybe if our society wasn't so fat we could get better mpg by not having to tote around so much weight.

  • like many say , this will not work at all. buses stop toooo frequently . and also the visibility is an issue, especially since its at an angle, thus making it very prone to cause glares and other issues. Would be an issue with snow rain etc also like others have stated

  • Big green machines???

    HAHAHAHAHAH!

No offense, That will barley do jack shit. All this Dumb idea proves is that over like 10 Years, 100 school buses might save 1 gallon of gas. I mean, no windshield wipers and no anti freeze. And besides, No bus companys would do that or agree to that, Evan if hes got 25k, It costs alot to do that, You dont just put glass over it And cover up the engine, that will also cost alot of money. And if anything, Hes make the envirment worse

  • cost alot of money do make a new hood for it

  • "My brother is a mad scientist" Oooh yea, dat cardboard wind tunnel is dangerous

  • This kid, and everyone who supports this idea, are naive. Are you people serious? Did you guys think about snow, rain, fog, etc.? Snow is going to collect on the shield without an adequate way to clear it. This idea is just so moronic and flawed, I still just can't believe how many people support it.

  • Phail.

  • This CAN'T WORK...I'm VERY VERSED with the subject matter in question here. I'm 25 years old & I live like 20-Miles Dead-West of Boston...okay, my mother has RUN the school bus company for 5 different towns for most of my life...okay, the reason this can't work...is because #1 regular "Plexiglass" won't work, it's gonna have to be Bullet Proof Lexan, & anybody who's ever played paintball with a regular paintball mask w/o a dual plane thermal lens knows that @ bad temps it'll fog like all hell

  • You'll probably need to test for visibility such as for glare and what happens when rain hits the shield. Not sure the shield will be economical on a slow moving school buses anyway. They may cost more than they save.

  • Who's that asian girl?

  • this is such a flawed idea, what was Pepsi thinking by supporting this?

First of all, school buses drive so slow and stop so frequently that drag coefficients mean almost nothing, hence the reason they are so boxy to begin with

second of all, the premise is grossly oversimplified and REAL wind tunnel tests might reveal it actually has a higher drag coefficient due to skin friction

furthermore, what about rain/snow/etc.? no windshield wipers, defrosters, etc.

    terrible idea, dumb move Pepsi.

  • @neogeon See if this clip restores your faith in the Pepsi Refresh Project /watch?v=7iEBdIYM-hU

  • @insightertrading ....that is some creepy shit. WTF is Pepsi thinking!?

  • @neogeon Let alone you can't put a fucking piece of green plexiglass over the windshield.

  • @neogeon - You're absolutely right.

If I remember right, the buses with the best fuel economy are the cab-over engine design.

This team should have looked more into retro-fitting with alt-fuels. Greyhound buses are majority Natural Gas fueled diesels. They can go a lot farther on a tank than regular diesels, or many diesel hybrids.

  • Pepsi comercial - /watch?v=UkceeukF2qE

  • Who was the asian girl in the commercial?

  • I have some great pictures with the Pepsi Refresh bus and Johnny. Contact me to see them.

  • this kid goes to my school.

  • @iYrock Kill him.

  • lol...the reason for the grant is to improve the idea. the reason for the contest is for "going green" and "earth friendly" publicity and marketing. i agree that "going green" is just a fad and just a bunch of feel good crap when it's all boiled down. as for the grant, having it or not isn't the reason i posted in the first place. the only reason i commented was to show it's a safety hazard more than anything else.

  • Comment removed

  • umm...i have a function brain that understands that this idea sounds good to people that don't understand physics or mechanics. pepsi gave him a $25k GRANT to improve on a seriously flawed idea that has no actual future. he seems like a bright kid, but he's still got a lot to learn. hopefully the grant will inspire him to go to college and study mechanical engineering, which is probably the only reason for the grant.

  • @fisoxlt No the reason for the grant is to make you go out and buy Pepsi. This is called marketing and Pepsi is doing this campaign so you'll buy their product. Brilliant idea really, Pepsi is cashing in on the whole feel good green crap that's going on right now. What's the gist of the school bus idea? Saves fuel....yadi yadi ya. Great that you have a functioning brain for physics and mechanics, but you still don't have the $25,000 grant.

  • oh please. this isn't going to do much, if anything, to improve the fuel efficiency of old buses, plus, it's more of a safety hazard due to the fact that the plexiglass is designed over the windshield and windshield wipers. obviously this wasn't voted on by mechanical engineers or mechanics and it won't be approved by the NHTSA.

  • @fisoxlt Who cares what the gov't thinks. This kid got $25K from Pepsi for this idea. You got nothing.

  • Awesome!

  • I don't get it

  • @DrDcat watch this explanation here @ BV85JRujpks
