When I was in Kazakhstan our translater would have us cross the street anywhere, regardless of whether there was a crosswalk, and ALL the cars would stop for us. This was on wide boulevards, not just side streets. Weird. We also took "cab" rides from just about anybody driving down the street. People on their way to work would stop, she would negotiate a price, they would take us wherever we were headed, and she'd pay the driver.

But it was a much smaller city than Rome. Maybe that's why.
