  • Haha I bet that for the last Potter, they didn't even bother with reps and such. They must have just stocked them, no questions asked!

  • I actually like the sky blue cover better.

  • Spazzpiggy Tell me about it!!!!

  • Jackson I loved As you wish but I really don't like either cover. If I hadn't heard the book was good I would never had bought it. Sisters Red's cover btw is really cool!

  • Yay thanks for the knowledge I'll be sure to enjoy it XD

ik its so sad what happened to borders but thank God the one that i go to isn't closing

  • i gotta say, I like the final cover of As You Wish better than the arc cover.

This was a really interesting video. I had wondered about this, especially because the Borders near my house (which is closing now) never carries the new books I want, so I stopped going there. In comparison, the Borders near where I used to live (I don't know if it's closing) always had the books I wanted. Now I have a better understanding of why.

  • Thanks for telling us about this. My sister-in-law works for a small publishing company here (UK) and she was telling me some of the stuff about publishers paying stores to do certain things with their book (like feature it) which surprised me, I guess it shouldn't have, but for some reason we (I at least) have this idea of the publishing and bookselling world being purer than other industries like, for example, shoe-selling. I don't know why?

  • (: This makes me feel better for always buying the books on their release date.

  • So it's better if I order Sweetly as close to the release date as possible?

Does it make a difference if I buy it on amazon? because I live in Germany and I kinda don't have any other options. Except... maybe ...

do bookstores order books from other countries, too? Because if they do, and if it's better for you/the book if I bought it there, I will :)

  • @xXKaylieAnnXx Books are only sold in another country if they're imported, or if the other country has purchased publishing rights to the book. For example, a German publisher (PAN) bought rights to AS YOU WISH, SISTERS RED, and SWEETLY-- they'll be published in German about a year after their US releases (German AS YOU WISH came out last year, for example).

Otherwise, if you want the English version, ordering Amazon or another online retailer is awesome :)

  • @JacksonAPearce

Yeah, I've bought the German version of "As you wish", but I never saw a german version of "Sisters Red", so I bougt it in amazon :)

  • @xXKaylieAnnXx It'll be out later this year!

  • @JacksonAPearce

    Oh, I see :)

Well, I'll look forward to it. Will be the first book that I own an original and a german copy of :)

    ("original copy? Oxymoron?)

  • I really love it when you make these informative vids. I would never know about this. Now I feel like I have some very awesome inside informaion about the publishing world.

  • I'm really glad I know this. I always wondered.

  • That is why I frequent Amazon. It carries just about every book available and when YOU preorder it, it arrives the very next day after its release, if its not on a Sunday. Its awesome.

  • Ooh, I didn't know about modelling - thanks for the info.

  • You remind me so much of my freshman year english teacher... Goodness I miss her so much!

  • This was a very interesting video. Learned a lot. Thanks for doing it...and I think I will be preordering more books now... : )

  • The Borders near me doesn't stock Paper Towns or Sisters Red :( I just had to wait a month for them to ship Paper Towns to me and then I had to pay extra for shipping when they told me it would be free. Grrr. On the bright side, I had my library order Sisters Red months ago and got to read it! :D

  • Quite informative!

  • I'm in the middle of Sisters Red that I got at the store I work in! I love your videos and your books! I now have a werewolf/little red riding hood obsession

  • Thank you for this video. I've always wondered about how that works.

It really irratates me when I go into a bookstore and they don't carry Agatha Christia, especially if they have a "Mystery" section. My copy of And Then There Were None informs me that "she is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the bible and Shakespeare." And I had to buy it from Amazon.ca!

And science fiction sections without Philip K. Dick, who has an award named after him!

  • Yeah, I have thought that for years that it is unfair that the books I know are being 'released' and the ones I want to buy are usually not at the stores when I go to look for them.

Hey, do you know how books get into libraries? Would you want your books in libraries or would you really rather everyone buy them?

  • I used to work in a YA bookstore in France. I remember a catalogue that pitched nearly every new release (all English titles translated) with: "[character] has a normal life. Until he/she [discovers he/she is a supernatural]/[meets a supernatural] and his/her life changes forever." It drove me crazy because there was so much more to these books but they were all being pitched in the post twilight frenzy. I was so excited to get to the pitch for Scott Westerfeld's "Leviathan" and NOT see that.

  • Aw you posted this on my birthday. (:

    Thanks for the knowledge.

  • I love your videos because I totally learn something I didn't know every time I watch one! :) Seriously...Every single one has a nugget of knowledge. Very cool!

  • So is it better to publish through an on demand publisher like Createspace? I by a lot off Amazon exactly because stores don't carry books like you said.

  • @semitonedown I am NOT a fan of self publishing, except in very rare circumstances. Traditional publishers have the time and resources to market your book in a way few self published authors can.

  • im looking forward for sweetly! :D

  • I love what you teach us in your videos!! :):)

  • i still need to buy as you wish off amazon :'( damn you UK stores!

  • @Rosieprower As You Wish is on TheBookDepository.co.uk in paperback or hardcover.

I generally do most of my book shopping online because 1) I'm poor and 2) Books not being stocked in all stores. Fortunately for me there's a great site for Australians: booko.com.au - it finds the best price for a book online with book price + shipping.

  • @Rosieprower That actually isn't the fault of the bookstore-- AS YOU WISH has not sold UK publication rights! If a publisher were to buy the rights and publish the book in the UK, it could be in stores.

  • don't worry would buy any book of yours on the release date :) thanks for the video though my best mate wants to be an author and she has an amazing inkpop account :) this would really help her !!

  • It's depressing that Borders filed for bankruptcy.

  • @winkyblinky1 I cried when it happened
