@Glaudge No. Holland (the pilot in every single one of the clips) was known for his risky style of flying. That's why some people had concerns with him piloting the plane that day. And it was one of his risky manoeuvres that caused the crash. But if you add in the horrible composition of this video it's no wonder one can get to your conclusion.
The senior flag officers that knew of his behavior should have been out processed from the military; dishonorable discharge, and no retirement. The pilot of this aircraft is a disgrace. The officers that knew of his previous behavior are even more of a disgrace go the military, and to aviation. Forget angle of attack, thrust, lift component, aspect ratios, etc.. This idiot executed a low level turn under conditions that a 17 y/o kid who just got his or her license knows are text book death t
@Tidusauron12 Just be quiet, man. I mean seriously? And being happy about the death of an American isn't racist. It's sick. And whoever is happy about the death of any human being who hasn't done anything wrong has MAJOR mental issues. And another thing, Tid, America either way, race or not is better than whatever you are. So.. eat it.
@TheFSFreeware oops. My bad. It was Lt. Colonel Mark McGeehan who attempted to eject. He was one of the guys who unsucessfully tried to get Holland grounded for a previous incident.
Looks like the commander of the crew forgot about it's not a jet fighter. Well, RIP to the crew. Of course it's an unturnable loss fro thier familes. But it's a life though.
It wasn't a test flight, it was a practice flight for the annual Fairchild Air Show. The maneuver that caused the crash was an unplanned evasive 'go around' called for by the tower due to a KC-135 being on the runway as the B-52 was coming in for its planned 'touch and go' maneuver. It was poorly executed, yes, but it was not due to pilot hot dogging.
@outdoorlife25 You're close, but no cigar! The KC-135 meant that Lt.Col Holland had to go-around. Holland executed a tight 360 turn, when part way though the turn he was about to enter restricted airspace where the nukes are stored. To avoid the area, Holland flew the aircraft in an extremely tight, steeply banked turn while maintaining the low, 250 foot altitude, at 14:16, the aircraft banked past 90°, descended rapidly, and hit the ground. Holland COULD have taken the long way round!
@outdoorlife25 So you see, it WAS because of Hollands cavalier attitude, there was no need for the extreme tight turn he performed. Cockpit voice recorders heard the pilots arguing about the tight turn. The USAF concluded "The accident investigation concluded that the chain of events leading to the crash was primarily attributable to Holland's personality and behaviour". SO, get it right next time.
@outdoorlife25@outdoorlife25 It definitely was due to hot dogging. The Wing Commander had specifically instructed Holland that his limits were 45 deg AOB, and 25deg pitch. Both of which were clearly exceeded in the practice. Holland had a history of 'hot dogging', but got away with it for several years. Subordiates brought up the problem, but were essentially ignored by COs. Don't believe me? Read this: w ww.crm-devel.o rg/resources/paper/darkblue/darkblue . htm
@lowanfast The author of that paper, Dr.(LtCol) Tony Kern was a brilliant young pilot in a Tanker Squadron at K.I.Sawyer while I was stationed there as a boom operator. He himself survived the actions of a "rogue" pilot (mid-air collision....another tanker flying in tight formation with his plane over Saudi). May have affected the career development path he chose, may have been there all along. At any rate, I was glad to see what he had done with his career.
It seems a lot of safety issues were ignored by the aircraft commander, I served at Fairchild Air Force Base as the B-52s were on alert. Witnessed many MITO takeoffs, emergency landing, touch and go's etc. Never did i see a KC-135 or B-52 make such a turn. Even with the huge wing of the B-52, lift would be lost, I don't think that aircraft can be flown up-side down. I feel for those that witnessed the tragedy, especially the families and service members that knew the crew.
The base commander at the time was bucking for another star, and Operation Thunder Hawk was a PR stunt to promote his agenda. I worked with the wife of the Captain of this B-52; she was a Red Cross volunteer and i worked at the hospital Dental Clinic. I was in charge of the Dental Identification aspect of my job, but another team Identified the bodies. What a mess.
this was actually a test flight to test low altitude turns and low speed turns. the mission was to test the turns and whatnot. this was the pilots last flight (well scheduled to be) and his family was watching to celebrate.
if this w&s a test, why didn't the plane fly higher with a virtual floor limit set (as it is usually done with pilots in training) ?
I thought this accident happened in an air show where the pilots are asked to be very close to the ground for obvious commercial and spectacular reasons
Someone remarked in one of the films that, "you don't see those kinds of turns very often." No because they put the plane into a stall were the wings loose lift and the controls do not function. The first time this pilot did this he should have been releived. from flying.
Boewing Aircraft Corp. saw thes films and knew the aircraft emvelope was being exceeded but they did nothing just like the chain of command. Officers who fail in their duty must be made to pay for their deeds because when they allow this kind of behavior people die and property is destroyed.
I'm sorry but what could Boeing have done to prevent this very accident? They can make recommendations but it's up to the pilot in command and the hierarchy of the military to prevent this from happening. Even if Boeing implemented new technology to the B-52 similar to Airbus' fly-by-wire technology to prevent the aircraft from exceeding the envelope, the military would still have to approve that retrofit, and especially on older planes such as the B-52, that would simply not happen.
Sheer fucking selfishness is what that pilot was! He placed everyone and many others in danger due to his silly childish antics of plainly showing-off!

They should have made him a flight instructor as soon as they started noticing his skills! It's a shame that pilots never had the chance to learn from such a courageous, skilled and wonderful man!
I have to purse it! That image will give me nightmares! Yes pity those at the hands of someone playing with there lives. The poor buggers never had the chance to bail out! But that would be pointless at that altitude and the trust coming off those engines would most likely suck you, you get the picture. Poor buggers.
Does the U.S. Air Force today, screen pilots for a (screw loose) each and every single day before they are even allowed near one of these aircrafts? Because anyone of us can snap at any time! All it takes is pressure!
He might have forgetting to buy fresh milk that morning and was worry about what time the shop closed? I dont mean that as joke. It can be the tiniest silliest thing and yes we do worry. I cant even imagine what the rest of the crew was thinking in the final seconds when they knew that aircraft was impossible to recover from that angle!
One more thing was there a (black box flight recorder active) on that B-52?
I mean does that aircraft look anything like an F-14 that can do these dangerously silly show-offing stunts at low altitude? I dont know a whole lot about flying but common sense tells you automatically!
Lt. Colonel Holland had a very bad history of being a so-called "hot dog" with the BUFF...he pushed the aircraft to the very far limits of its capabilty too many times...yet,it seems he was never actually reprimanded or even punished for his actions...by that I simply mean,he was never relieved of flying duties...the one who tried to do something, unfortunately, was the only one who actually tried to eject...and he didn't even know what was planned for that flight...he was not there for the brief.
I hate to be the one that has to correct you here but the "co" on this mission was the commander of one of the bomber squadrons.. He knew exactly what was going to go on. You see, the guy that was "supposed" to be in the rt seat was the base commander(a full bird col) Howevr, he had to attend the memorial service for the victims of the Dean Melburg shooting at the time of the flight. Consequently they gave it to a captain. The captains commander said no to that and flew instead to protect him
What it comes down to with this incident is that it's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt. We(Anybody at Fairchild AFB) loved to watch this stuff.. anything going wrong was never envisioned.. I was at the base 2 years before the crash and every year they did it. I'll never forget the 93 show.. He almost lost it doing the same bank maneuver over the main hangers.. the plane would have skidded right into the dorms - killing hundreds.. This crash was a bad day for all of us!!
I am an expert on the subject here. I was at the base when it happend. The pilots name was Lt Col Bud Holland and his code name was Hot Dog. the co pilot(a Lt Col I believe) was a squadron comandr and he filled in to prevent a jr officer(a captain) from flying with this guy. The other two were full bird Colonels retiring after this flight. Bud Holland was one of 2 guys that would even attempt these manuevers.. He over banked( over the 90% threshold) the plane and had no room to recover.
I've been in that position- trying to let the Brasshats know that one of their number is a suicidal egomaniac, who's going to kill good pilots with his mindless shit.
I knew this pilot (won't say his name here even though it's easy to find). He had a reputation that definitely preceded him about pushing this plane beyond its reasonable limits.
b52's are a bastard to turn while flying i saw some vids of other pilots that fly b52's and they say you turn the yoke and wait for the plane to respond cause thats a 70's/ 60/s plane it doesn't have the fly by wire system of today but also if that damn captain that was flying it did it a little more safely then none of it probably would have happened
The pilot was brought up from Castle AFB in Cali just for this purpose. He was one of 2 guys that would even attempt these tricks. He was practicing for the airshow that coming weekend. These planes dont have ailerons, just spoilers. If you look closely the spoilers on the rt wing are fully deployed. He banked over 90% and way too low. Another 1/4 mile and he would have smashed in to the survival school. killing hundreds! Sad day for us - and after the dean melberg shootings too. Terrible
It's sad to lose four lives and a very expensive airplane to such a bonehead, rookie error. I've only just started on multi-engine props and even I know better than to bank without pulling. Maybe he should have taped a piece of yarn to the windscreen to keep his airflow in check.
Hey. congrats on the multi engine training. I used to fly. I miss it badly! Too expensive! This Lt Col was a good guy but he took too many chances and did it on purpose. It wasn't an error. He was blatently trying to do these manuevers. It was part of the airshow. Look at some of the other video from years past at that same base. 92 and 93. You'll see what I am talking about. He almost lost it in 93 but recovered in time. I was there. You see nobody complained because it looked cool.
In the front of the top deck, the pilot and co-pilot go out the top. In the back of the top deck the gunner and EW officer (rear-facing) go out the top. The navigator and bombardier sit on the lower deck and can eject downwards. In the D-model, the gunner sat at the back of the plane. He could eject his turret and go right out the back end.
This is a case of pure egotism and the refusal to discipline a senior officer who was "one of the guys". In much the same way Chuck Yeager refused to follow strict operating guidelines and crashed his NF-104 starfighter.
The B-52 pilot pulled a sharp turn he would have gotten away with under ordinary circumstances. However, a particularly strong tailwind on that occassion pushed the tail planes causing the B-52 to turn more sharply than intended.
I bet I had seen this guy fly out on the owhee desert. Stuffed right down into the malheur river and owyhee river channels. He loved to scare the Hell out of people who were fishing . You can not mistake the profile of a B-52 & when its so close it really rattles people. I was in disbelief more than once over the antics I saw .
Well as the saying goes; There's old pilots and there's bold pilot's, but there's no old bold pilot's. This inept clown who was actually an instructor pilot in type and new the aircraft's limitations as well as the engineer's who designed her, had a history of flying the aircraft beyond design limitations and published pitch and bank angles not to be exceeded. This is a classic case of ego homicide in the 1st degree. A lit fuse on a keg of dynamite that finally blew.
No one seems to notice that the plane would have completed the practice maneuver for the next day's airshow if the wing hadn't hooked one the power lines
yes everyone knows that..this would have never been allowed in the show ever, and such a maneuver can not be done by this air craft and this video shows why.. the wing hitting the power line has nothing to do with this plane never crashing. the power line was just in the path this plan was going down and nothing could have corrected the stall other than the extreme bank he tried to complete. This guy never should have flown again before this tragic crash that took the lives of 3 others on board.
personally, I could care less about if my tax money went into that, it's just sad about the innocent people on the plane who died because of an asshole who should have been grounded long before.
Wether you like it or not, money IS life. We are not talking about pocket change here. Consider this. Think of all the innocent lives that can be saved for the cost of one of these aircraft. You can put more cops on the street, pay for better education (to nip crime in the bud) and fund jobs, etc etc.
Well I think you are the one living in a dream world my friend. If you ever need a life saving proceedure done, see if you can get it for free. I suppose all those cops keeping you safe also work for free.
the government and high in power don't care about a few lost lives if those live are in the way of the government's agenda. a lost life to them is the equivalent of taking a shit for any regular human being.
Nothing was wrong with the plane, Holland was cocky jackass and killed himself and his entire crew because he thought he'd do something cool. Gives more meaning to "Hey! Watch this!"
Bud Holland should have been immediately suspended from flying after the ridge incident. that adrenaline junkie jock took the lives of 3 others because of his own insipid attitude.
I am visting here at the Fairchild Air Force Base for the summer, and my brother in law told me about this, I drove by where it happened........ I guess he should have been more careful.....
this guy flew a 40+ yr old heavy, long range bomber around like it was a new fighter jet. arrogant prick that took stupid chance's, risked the live's of his fellow crewmen and blatantly disobeyed safety regulation's but kissed ass and manipulated his superior's good enough to get away with it every time and keep flying. i hope this cocksucker is occupying a special place in hell and waiting for anyone who's still breathing and had authority over him at that time.
That pilot shouldv'e been grounded years ago... What a waste of three other lives, and a few million dollars worth of great aircraft... Why the hell didn't he transfer to a fighter unit, if he wanted to show off???
omg poor family's i can't even begin to imagine what they most have gone though & still are.i'm a virtual pilot/realpilot wish i could done something to stop this horror from happening.
thats the thing ...this guy had been reprimanded several times ..noone wanted to fly with this guy(obvius reasons)there is another video of this same hell bent pilot buzzing a camera crew standing on a cliff and he clears the ground by only 10 feet!!!!
wonder how many officers didnt make the cut to be a B-52 pilot when holland got it? goes to show that the selection process for these jobs is not foolproof. I wish holland would have got his single seat fighter slot. then he would have only killed himself
fukin pilot deserved what he got... but his crew didn't deserve to have their wives and children robbed of their men... fukker!!! clone the bastard so you can cut his balls off and stuff them in his mouth.
this guy got away with murder for years before he crashed this airplane...he thought that he could fly a B-52 like a jet fighter...Wrong...he lost his flight here and crashed...he should have been grounded long before this happened...

Yes. But americans are fucking assholes who know nothing except themselves. You wouldnt believe the amount of times a yank has asked me where london is. Fuck even some chick did it in the amazing race.
Rog1957 That is a very uneducated thing to say and racist you better check yourself, because I'm a so called "Yank" and anyway britain your dear and loved country founded "Yanks" so blam yourself.

u missed the point
if you READ the comments then they all degenerate into a nasty tirade of bitching, swearing, its is unpleasant and generally yes i am sorry to say the americans are the worst culprits in these forums
even go into a professional airline pilots of america forum and you will see the same tirades! oh yeah thats really grown up and educated aint it
stop hiding behind yr pc screens thinking its fun to say what you say and your the big man
Ok i'm not educated you say? Then why would you say Ain't if it's not a word? Also Yank WTH that sounds pretty racist to me. Also I"m only 14 no one is trying to be big, I'm only trying to speak the truth which you need to be also aren't "Brits" Literate? If so then your a disgrace to them, you can't even speak proper. Also I have read the other comments...
All I have to say is And? They are not being racist maybe they are making fun of good people but still not calling people out of context.
I'm just going to say that if people want to say it's cool let them, they are not going to stop especially since they are computers/computer away, so u can't hurt them. But my thoughts of this is actually sad especially if my dad or myself had my children watch me die or I see my dad die, too disturbing and it would haunt me forever when I get on a plane.
If Holland wanted to be the Evel Knievel of the B-52, then he should have been grounded permanently. He used the B-52 as his own personal stunt plane. I feel for the families of the other airmen that perished due to Holland's brashness.
never ceases to amaze me, i saw this video a few years ago and knew a pilot that was under the assholes wing. a simple example of officers protecting officers kept this dumbass flying. sad.
idlewild, your a retard if he hadnt been so wreckless he wouldnt have been this crash and my mom's best friend's dad (the co-pilot) would still be alive you ass hole
As I understand it the co-pilot didn't interfere with the controls; the news report refers to his decision to take the place of the former co-pilot, because he didn't want anybody else to be put at risk.
There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old and bold pilots.

This crash was a bad day for all of us!!
matthewimi 2 years ago
I'm confused. Did he crash it to kill the crazy pilot or did it just crash on its own? Can someone fill me in here!
LauerProductions 2 years ago
I am an expert on the subject here. I was at the base when it happend. The pilots name was Lt Col Bud Holland and his code name was Hot Dog. the co pilot(a Lt Col I believe) was a squadron comandr and he filled in to prevent a jr officer(a captain) from flying with this guy. The other two were full bird Colonels retiring after this flight. Bud Holland was one of 2 guys that would even attempt these manuevers.. He over banked( over the 90% threshold) the plane and had no room to recover.
matthewimi 2 years ago
Jeez, can't a pilot have a little fun?!
JK, I realize this accident changed the way resource management is taught and reviewed. Pilot should have been grounded long before this flight.
Dajida 2 years ago
I've been in that position- trying to let the Brasshats know that one of their number is a suicidal egomaniac, who's going to kill good pilots with his mindless shit.
rattinox 2 years ago
I knew this pilot (won't say his name here even though it's easy to find). He had a reputation that definitely preceded him about pushing this plane beyond its reasonable limits.

smigbabb 2 years ago
b52's are a bastard to turn while flying i saw some vids of other pilots that fly b52's and they say you turn the yoke and wait for the plane to respond cause thats a 70's/ 60/s plane it doesn't have the fly by wire system of today but also if that damn captain that was flying it did it a little more safely then none of it probably would have happened
AmericanMale20 2 years ago
The pilot was brought up from Castle AFB in Cali just for this purpose. He was one of 2 guys that would even attempt these tricks. He was practicing for the airshow that coming weekend. These planes dont have ailerons, just spoilers. If you look closely the spoilers on the rt wing are fully deployed. He banked over 90% and way too low. Another 1/4 mile and he would have smashed in to the survival school. killing hundreds! Sad day for us - and after the dean melberg shootings too. Terrible
matthewimi 2 years ago
It's sad to lose four lives and a very expensive airplane to such a bonehead, rookie error. I've only just started on multi-engine props and even I know better than to bank without pulling. Maybe he should have taped a piece of yarn to the windscreen to keep his airflow in check.
azimuth361 2 years ago
Hey. congrats on the multi engine training. You see nobody complained because it looked cool.

to bad they didn't have time to eject...
WooDpenis 2 years ago
don't believe that B52's are fitted with ejector seats.
neverfearchrisishere 2 years ago
they have them.. the 2 up front go out the roof.. and the 2 in the back go out the bottom...
WooDpenis 2 years ago
nope
ometec 2 years ago
nope? actually they do have ejection seats..
WooDpenis 2 years ago
In the front of the top deck, the pilot and co-pilot go out the top. In the back of the top deck the gunner and EW officer (rear-facing) go out the top. The navigator and bombardier sit on the lower deck and can eject downwards. In the D-model, the gunner sat at the back of the plane. He could eject his turret and go right out the back end.
drchaffee 2 years ago
NO. The 4 in the upper flight deck eject upwards, the lower flight deck Navigator/Radar Navigator go down.
TheJomogogo 2 years ago
they actually are i know it sounds surprising but go look it up they shoot downward though from what ive read
JamesBr661 2 years ago
Thanks for the info. I'll go read about it.
neverfearchrisishere 2 years ago
This is a case of pure egotism and the refusal to discipline a senior officer who was "one of the guys". In much the same way Chuck Yeager refused to follow strict operating guidelines and crashed his NF-104 starfighter.
The B-52 pilot pulled a sharp turn he would have gotten away with under ordinary circumstances. However, a particularly strong tailwind on that occassion pushed the tail planes causing the B-52 to turn more sharply than intended.

Isnt this the same type of plane that hit the empire building?
sp33dygsr 2 years ago

HSshenanigans 3 years ago
lol completed that? It was stalled and headed straight for the ground NO ONE could have corrected it after the 42 sec mark.
bigj70634 3 years ago
They were practicing for an airshow.
HSshenanigans 3 years ago
yes everyone knows that..this would have never been allowed in the show ever, and such a maneuver can not be done by this air craft and this video shows why.. the wing hitting the power line has nothing to do with this plane never crashing. the power line was just in the path this plan was going down and nothing could have corrected the stall other than the extreme bank he tried to complete. This guy never should have flown again before this tragic crash that took the lives of 3 others on board.
bigj70634 3 years ago
after the wings are nearly vertical
gravity takes over at 32 ft per sec squared
and that baby is on its way down
that close to the ground in that kind of descent the power lines were simply
incidental

Yes, his crew didn't deserve their fate. Also there is the issue concerning an expensive aircraft paid for the the taxpayers.

personally, I could care less about if my tax money went into that, it's just sad about the innocent people on the plane who died because of an asshole who should have been grounded long before.
sgtpepper1138 2 years ago
Wether you like it or not, money IS life. We are not talking about pocket change here. Consider this. Think of all the innocent lives that can be saved for the cost of one of these aircraft. You can put more cops on the street, pay for better education (to nip crime in the bud) and fund jobs, etc etc.

Nothing was wrong with the plane, Holland was cocky jackass and killed himself and his entire crew because he thought he'd do something cool. Gives more meaning to "Hey! Watch this!"
osuengineer2012 3 years ago 5
Bud Holland should have been immediately suspended from flying after the ridge incident. that adrenaline junkie jock took the lives of 3 others because of his own insipid attitude.
Suprah 3 years ago 12
me to... wait we would have given our lives!!!...yo!!!
jakefortwice 3 years ago
there was nothing mechanically wrong w/ the aircraft.
the pilot is LtC "Bud" Holland. He was known for breaking all the rules associated with flying the B52.
this time he took it too far and all four on board were killed.
There's nothing cool about breaking the rules when it's people's lives and billions of dollars at stake.

Go to Wikipedia and type in Bud Holland. It will briefly describe the situation and how it led to this tragedy. Holland was the one at fault.
Timbonezs 4 years ago 2
If Holland wanted to be the Evel Knievel of the B-52, then he should have been grounded permanently. He used the B-52 as his own personal stunt plane. I feel for the families of the other airmen that perished due to Holland's brashness.

As I understand it the co-pilot didn't interfere with the controls; the news report refers to his decision to take the place of the former co-pilot, because he didn't want anybody else to be put at risk.
