I remember hoping "2nd Wind" was going to be "Nearly Human" sides 3 & 4, but it's a completely different record! Todd never does the same record twice! "Who's Sorry Now" is golden! It's not "Nearly Human" It's an equally great follow up with an entirely different approach! Rundgren as everone knows is a genius
Great song, I love the typical melodyline and the great lyrics. Thank you for the very interesting backgroundinfo, it's a great video and the first time I saw it.
After reading your liner notes, I am now convinced that Todd is a "computer wizard" too! I would very much like to see the 2-hour speech at SIGGRAPH! Maybe someday?
I believe I read every post here, and I don't think anyone has mentioned the smudges under Todd's eyes in this video. Okay, I know that is not "important" but my curiosity is peaked. Is it just Todd's way of "dressing up" for the video? Maybe he is recovering from a facelift? Did Michele have a go at him?
Does anyone know, care, or even notice this besides me?
If you read my long "more" essay about this video and Todd's lecture at JPL about how he made it, when he took audience questions, not a single person asked him about the black schmutz under his eyes.. looks like the same stuff football players often use.. I don't think it means anything any more than the purple and green streaks in his hair.. just something to look "different".. ::shrug:: ..
I attended a Video Production workshop back in 1993 and that's where I first saw this video. The guy teaching it was a big fan of Video Toaster. the vid was state of the art at the time, and still looks good. It prompted me to go out and buy the Second Wind cassette. Still have it!
I'd forgotten this lovely song- thank you for sharing it with us! I've watched it several times since finding it here last night, and it's been in my head all day. Couldn't wait to get home and play it again. Wonderful Todd.
This is TR at his best..all you have to do is to listen to him sing..and yup he plays every instrament...This man's heart is from God talking........Peace..marcia
Hi.. if i disremember incorrectly, this track (although he did perform it live, in concerts).. was recorded at his home.. using Macs for digitizing and Editing the music.. and Amigas to do the video..
if you have some verifiable source that this vidoe's music track was recorded live, on stage, i'd be happy to stand (or sit) corrected..
Actually, the cuts for this album were live. It was recorded at the Palace of Fine Arts in SFO over three days. As members of the audience, you couldn't make a sound until the song was completed. If the band made a mistake, they started the track over. It was like being in the studio. He had assembled a great band consisting of members of Bourgois Tagg, Journey and the Tubes.
Note: the following year, NewTek re-released Lightwave as a seperate package, and sold the toaster for 500 dollars more.. I liked Todd before the Toaster.. I was totally suprised when I read about the video in Amiga world, but MTV hardly played it.. That's okay, MTV started sucking after about 3 or 4 years.. Chann3lz, my site, is an attempt at first year MTV, almost no VJ's, no ads, nothing but non-stop videos.. Difference, Chann3lz has no repeats for weeks..
But was tightly coupled to amiga hardware because amiga's graphic processor had a 80 instruction cache that could be used to perform custom effects (before NVidia cards, before most consumer-level graphics cards). Everyone, I mean everyone in the world was anticipating these things.. Apple had nothing on the Toaster (for a while), Microsoft (for 5 years?, with targa boards?). SGI maybe? Hardly consumer level.. 3D Studio Max, not for 3 years.. Alias, yes, but expensive!
The video toaster was the first consumer-level video editor in a box.. It has hardware chroma-key, genlocking, titling, 3D modeller, animation, renderer.. frame buffer, time-base correction (needed to do A/B roll video editing).. First non-linear video studio in a box? Before Adobe Premiere was a baby.. Also had realtime wipes..
Notable features of this video, at the time, SGI workstations, the Indigo's were released in the late 80s and sold for over 10,000 dollars. The Toaster? 3000-4000 dollars. This on a 25Mhz Motorola 68030 (~386). Lightwave 1.0 had NO ray-tracing.. Toy Story used no Ray-Tracing either. Also no inverse-kinematics with skin-groups until 1995 (Jurrasic Park).. Tkae a look at Tron from a decade before took Cray million dollar cray computers.
This particular vid is available on a DVD called "The Desktop Collection", which features other video creations like this. Lest us older fans forget that Todd practically invented the music video format standard adopted by MTV and the rest of the record industry.I've always admired how Todd seems to home make all of his dazzling and inspiring creations. Many producers won't touch a project like his without a huge expense account, and they STILL can't come up with a comparable result!
Yeah, look at his older videos, he used analog video effects in his videos, chroma-key effects in "time heals.. Quantel paintboxes? What else was he using?
He was Video Toaster customer #1. He bought it off NewTek before doors opened (at CES?).
I daresay that if it weren't for the boost Rundgren gave the Amiga and Newtek, they might have been dead a good five years earlier than when Commodore went bankrupt. A lot of his stuff made it onto several of NewTek's Toaster demo tapes. I remember a few scenes from this and "Fascist Christ."
This is my favourite video of all time. I remember first seeing it on MTV in Australia back in 1991. The song wasn't a hit, but it's far superior to some of the rubbish that the punters have to put up with these days.
I always knew that Todd was a cutting-edge dude with respect to technology, but I never had the proof. This is that proof. Compare what he was able to achieve with what they did in the Dire Straits video for "Money For Nothing" and you will better appreciate his achievement.
Todd is stil around and he's now the lead singer for "The New Cars." Remember The Cars with frontman Ric Ocasek from the 70s? Ric is gone - Todd has taken his place. They have one album out and they had or are still on their first tour.
Yeppers Todd is still alive & he got married to his girlfriend & had a tattoo of a wedding ring on his wedding finger too! But Todd's touring with The New Cars.
I saw this video once in 1991 on a program called "Noise Network" that was an alternative video show that aired Saturday Nights on Channel America(anyone remember it?). A great video that is also a sad reminder of how Commodore couldn't keep the Amiga going in spite of its advanced capabilities. Also like the "Prisoner" reference towards the end. Is Todd Rundgren a "Prisoner" fan? An awesome video not to be missed.
I have the video to "Fascist Christ" somewhere in my collection. I was at that SIGGRAPH, and managed to crash the ILM party at the Richard Nixon Library. Saw Todd there in the rose garden out back.
Todd did a second Lightwave 3D rendered video, "Fascist Christ" which was shown at a huge NewTek party held at the SIGGRAPH convention in Anaheim many years ago, on a huge screen, outdoors at the Movieland Wax Museum. No kidding. I was there along with about 2000 other people to see it. I've been searching for that video for years but to no avail and haven't seen it since. If you liked this one, that one would blow your mind. Maybe I'll be able to track it down some day.
nice video.i remember todd getting into video years ago and demonstrating some really basic stuff to bob harris on a bearsville special (old grey whistle test)

Apparently, crack the Top 40 again, not that that would mean anything in this day and age.
But somehow I suspect Todd doesn't really care about that. He's in it for the music.
