Shug, Love the videos to start off. I have a question...How do you attach a whoopie sling, plus a ridge line to your hammock. I have watched a few videos about attaching a whoopie sling, but not so much on the ridge line. Is it possible to create a loop in the whoopie sling near where it is connected to the hammock (tying a overhand knot), and attach the ridge line there. Or will this create a weak point in the amsteel? I am really interested on how you attach your amsteel? Thanks!
This is the video(s) that started me on hammock camping. Went out hammock camping for the first time Dec 2011, my friend was worried about my warmth and comfort. I slept with superior warmth and comfort thanks to info from Shug's videos. All secure in Southern Oregon! Whooo eee budy! Thanks Shug!
Shug, thanks for the videos. I'm new to hammock camping and some of us are going out next weekend. It will get down in the teens so this will help me to stay warm. Thx Bro.
Just curious Shug... What size whoopies do you use. I know your tree huggers are 4 or 5 feet, but was wondering about the whoopie slings. Thanks for all the information you provide to us hammock newbies.
Thanks for this series Shug. I just purchased my first hammock. Yes, I am a newbie. I have a DD Frontline Hammock and a DD 3mx3m tarp. I live in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, so i figured this set up would be best with all the mosquitos and rainy season. I need to modify the straps and add the whoopie slings. I may be asking you for some help on this. Anthony.
MAN I LIKE YOUR GOOFY ATTITUDE! you are funny. I came across you looking for stuff to sew and found the vid on tarps and now I am hooked! Very informative.

I knew this would be good when I heard The Butterfly at the beginning! Quick question: what are you using for toggles? Did you just cut small sections of some aluminum tubing (a tent pole perhaps)?
Thanks a lot for this video and your others! I enjoyed them all and they were very informative!
Any way you can point me in the direction of a video that goes in a little more depth for tightening and loosening whoopie slings? (Your information was great but I need more assistance-specifically in loosening the slings)
Also, I have my Speer Winter Tarp clipped onto a couple Pressik Knots on my HH ridgeline, would that be alright or should I get a separate tarp ridgeline?
Please excuse my ignorance but this video says for noobs so here I go... is that store bought hammock? Or did you just make it. it looks like my shower curtain and it just got me wondering if you could use something like a shower curtain instead of spending like $99 at REI. Thank you
Shuggy I just got my ENO hammock and love it dearly. There was no suspension that came with it. Right now I'm using the straps from ratchet straps (minus the ratchet mechanism) I can wrap it around and get a good "tie" on it but some dutch clips would be so much faster. Where can I buy them. I know they come with a whoopi sling but I don't need one, just the clips. Any idears?
Hey, I have another question, sorry if one of your other videos cover this. But, I bought a gossamer gear 1/8" pad a while ago and now I'm wondering if a Space Blanket tarp would work. The gossamer pad is very bulky so i was hoping that the SB would be good, in general, down to 30 degrees. If it does, will I encounter any moisture build up problems on my back? Thanks!!!
@deb82856 Taut-line works very well. Whoopie is just a fun option. Google "whoopie sling" or search on YouTube here and you'll find some info on them.
thanks- that marlinspike knot works great. I just got my first hammock, a Guatemalan style very basic cloth hammock , here in Austin, TX. I used some nylon rope to tie to either tree, did the marlinspike rig on each, and then I used the very basic knot from this video: youtube.com/watch?v=lhJqT1sAmjg to hang the hammock ropes from the toggle- works like a charm! happy hammocking! and thanks agin!
I'm with ya Shugs - i'll no be a lollygaggin, i'll be right up there with ya son- ya fookin funny old crazy S.O.B. - i'm a gona watch some more in the mornin GNITE !
I got a hammock without instructions, hoped your video would help, it didn't. You completely skipped how to attached the hammock( ska big tarp with tie points) to the rope it hangs from. Your hammock was already set up when you hooked it to the tree. Videos for noobs need to show every step.
@johnmonk66 I depends on the hammock but in PART 4 at 5:30 I show some suspension options being attached to the hammock. Some hammocks vary in that area.
Oh yeah, the "learning curve" wasn't wasted, got it, lol. Apologies for all the chatter, I'm stuck by the computer watching the Iditarod, great race this year...
Can't wait to try all this. I'm playing around with a 48"x 9' hank of nylon that was laying around. Think I going to string it up and try that asym lay thang. I'm curious about the Hennesey style side supports, and that reflective material I've seen in some videos. Man, the possibilities if you can just get the "flat lay" thang right... lol, it's always something. Then it would be the cold bottom thang, then the hungry bear thang, on and on... TomCat the music city blues guy
OMG, No, this ain't your fault. But I have been watching your videos and I AM about to go out and spend I don't know how much on tarps, and hammocks, and whoopies and no telling how much 850 plus down and shock cord and toggles and rings and no telling what thinking about my poor ole back, er old back. So, just one quandry. Are you really laying flat in that green hammock, or is one of your shoulders always going to kinda be on a slope? Great videos, funny with concise info...
@musiccitybluesguy I would reckon 95% flat. I am very comfy in it. For some ..it takes a couple of tries to find the sweet spot. There is a learning curve.
hey shug after watching you for a LONG time i finally decided to be a hammock camper, i bought the clark NX-200, and now im looking for an underquilt, i was looking on the hammock forums and stumbled across stormcrow's website and was wondering which underquilt you might recommend for an all year around camper, or if theres another one from somewhere else you might advise
Hey man, A few weeks ago I got the 1/8 inch gossamer gear pad and it works great! I just tested it out in 27 degree weather along with a 15 degree marmot sleeping bag. The only problem I'm having is finding a comfortable sleeping situation. Do any of your videos cover the techniques on getting into your sleeping bag and getting situated?
hey, you know, you can even hang a hammock with only 1 tree.. you should try it out and make another video about it.. I saw it somewhere on youtube, can't remember exactly..
What is the grey pad that you said is very warm? And also, would a 15 degree synthetic sleeping bag be fine in a Hennessey Hammock in 45 degree weather? Or do I need to use a pad also?
Loved to know you,Shug! You are a heaven of a teacher! rsrs God bless you and your family!Wish you live forever so that we can always appreciate your talents and laugh! ;) rsrs
Thanks for the tutorial Shug I have a question though. How is Hammock camping for fat guys, I mean I'm around 6ft 3in and weigh around 325lbs so I didn't know if weight and size were factors in using a hammock? Keep up the great work I love your videos Thanks
@mythic89 i'm 6'5'' and 300 and i bought the ENO hammock single nest and it supports me fine, it goes up to 400 LBS. the problem is the suspension, the ropes, luckily i started football again and i'm down to 270.
Hey Shug, Its me again Shane. I am getting ready to do the big conversion, but I am getting a blackbird and I need your advice, I know you get asked questions all the time and im sorry to bother you.... But the blackbird comes in a single layer, and a double layer??????/ Which would advise me on. I am 5'8" and 175. I also am thinking to get the edge or the superfly for a tarp. I am also thinking of getting the 3 season yeti for the under quilt. will the woopiesling work with this set up? Shane
Shug, I am sold and updated my hammock. Where did you get the tree strap? It looks a bit longer than my HH hugger and in fact more versatile than mine. How long is it?
@texron89 I did put some links through the videos .... either on the video or in the description box below the videos. Other than that I just figured folks could use the "Google" and search.

Thanks to you I am going on a Solo hammock trip for a couple days ....My question is where the heck do ya get them there woopie slings ? Me's a like em looks easy pizzy lemon squeasy .
OK stupid question: Why not put the sling on the toggle? I know you said ON THE KNOT... but what happens if you setup in the dark, after a bender and put it on the toggle? (just askin'!)
I know you aren't asking me, but in my opinion if your toggle is strong enough to hold your weight... it's too heavy. The toggle is just there to hold (or be held by) the knot.
First time I've seen ur vids. I can promise it won't be the last. Thanks for all the info. I am gonna try to get into this style this summer. Time to get off the ground and get a better sleep.
Hey Shug, just to follow up on my previous comment, I got my whoopies and just did a test hang with my new Grand Trunk Ultralight. I have to say I've never gone from packed, to perfectly set-up, back to packed so quickly and easily. The system also works well with my DD Travel Hammock. Thanks for the tutorial, I didn't have the courage to try a W.S. until I watched it!
Thank you shug! As a fan of your channel ,music and total hammock nub, I was hoping you would produce this video. I'm sure im gonna learn tons, just don't make me wait to long to see the other parts to the set lol
Ha Ha Ha Shug your to much . This first video was not just informative but man it was funny . awesome job Shug !!! Does your wife see these videos and if so what does she think . You need your own T.V. show.

OK stupid question: Why not put the sling on the toggle? I know you said ON THE KNOT... but what happens if you setup in the dark, after a bender and put it on the toggle? (just askin'!)
sawyer7271 2 years ago
Toggle may bend. You fall ..... disgust sets in. Trip tainted.
shugemery 2 years ago
I know you aren't asking me, but in my opinion if your toggle is strong enough to hold your weight... it's too heavy. The toggle is just there to hold (or be held by) the knot.
