  • Grandpa Davis,

I love this free compost barrel. It looks easy to flip and it's great that you obtained the parts for free- except for the $3 for bungee cords. I'm going to forward this to our Green Committee for Maricopa County Public Health in Phoenix and hopefully all 13,000 employees will be able to see your video and be encouraged to start composting! Thanks so much

  • @divingbells29 Thanks for the comment.

  • Nice job on your tumbler. Recycling stuff you already have on hand is an excellent idea. Do you compost throught the winter as well with like house scraps and such?

  • Raise the base another foot and a half and you won't have to dig it out, just pour out.

  • There is one problem with this type of tumbler once they get heavy they are hard to turn & the bungees dont always hold. So if you have it around half or 3/4 full with compost it will be hard to turn.

  • I built one of these yesterday...very excited about it. Thanks for the ideas. I also had to share your video on facebook. Loved it!!!

  • great Video grandpa Davis i was tired of using a shovel to turn a pile and i just made a tumbler with your design... my family absolutely loves it

  • You started it with liquid nitrogen? Where did you get that?

  • great idea, thx.

  • The 55 gallon barrels I have are exactly like yours. I've been struggling with how to do the lid. I've seen one other method but it was much more tedious than yours. Thanks for that!! Also, very good job on the video!

  • All for free? I guess you think your lawnmower was free huh? And this contraption you built was free of charge?

  • @1dgg9h4dr6ppp8 Thought that up all by yourself, didn't you? We can tell.

  • A compost tumbler for the price of two bungee cords....Fantastic. I'm pretty new to composting and only have room for a "Darlek" bin, not a tumber. But I might make room...Brilliant Video. Thanks

  • I wonder, after 6 weeks in a tumbler, would the material be near the consistency of dirt, and free from odor? (All other conditions being ideal.)

  • @BooKittyRadley It actually only takes a few weeks depending on conditions, but when it is finished it is the consistency of of loamy rich soil and has no odor.

  • Great job.

  • Super video! I made one yesterday. Turning the lid upside down is a great idea. Thanks!

  • dear grandpadavis, thanks for sharing yur great work. I'm from Phil. n just been made aware of the wonder of composting by a friend who is into strictly organic farming. More than planting composting just gripped my mind. Last nite I slept late because Ive been thinking how to make a composting tumbler. yur idea is simple n possible to make. but just wonder why didnt you put ventilation or draining holes on your drum. are they not needed to come up with good compost? - jean sy

  • @zxsyjean sorry it's taken so long to reply (busy summer) but if you watch carefully I mentioned, kind of quicky, that I drilled holes in the tumbler to aid in the ventalation. The secret to fast composting is areobic composting. Non-areobic composting takes much longer, sometimes up to a year, but areobic composting is much faster. So, keep tumbling ever day or so and you will have a nice pile of compost in three to four weeks.

  • I just built my first of two on Saturday. It turned out great. Thanks so much for the great video!

  • @lowphoenix

Where did you get the container from ?

    Thank you.

  • i hear the steel ones rust quickly

  • Nice!!!!!!

  • I have just built one using a 55-gal steel drum with a very similar design. I particularly like your using the bungee cords to hold the lid on. I may steal that idea.

And I'll be building another in a couple of days using the same design. I'm looking for BIG production this year.

    Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  • So I built it, and it turned out pretty good. Only problem is I drilled one hole for the axle a little higher than the other. Not that big of a deal though.

  • I think I'm going to build one just like this. Maybe tomorrow!
