I heard this routine before, mostly from Laugh-In clips, but I never realized who Mr. Veedul was actually supposed to be! LOL She really is one of the funniest people around.
Lily's both universally & timelessly funny in nearly all she does, these older cuts being some of her finest work. I have been looking for another appearance of hers on Merv, circa the same time period, mid to late 60's when she did perhaps one of her most hysterically funny characters to date: an octogenerian former beauty queen with too much facial plastic surgery giving contorted-jestured facial beauty tips. I had been a fan for many years already when i saw it the 1st time, mid 70's. Thanks!
Goddamned Iconic! Lily's character are truly memorable, but her Enerestine is both endearing and immortal. I wish she would get back on the touring circuit. She would surely be welcomed at the Apollo Theatre and Radio City Music Hall to raves!!!
I loved both Merv and Mike Douglas. I remember seeing "The Incredible shrinking Woman" and then when I went home and saw Lily on Mike Douglas the same day.
I love Lily. I still have 3 of her vinyl records w/ the excellent "Tell Miss Sweeney Goodbye" "Lud and MArie" "Soroity Girl"
Brilliant. Although few people under the age of 40 remember telephone operators (or "The Bell System," for that matter), this sketch remains hilarious after more than 40 years.
Body language is always fascinating to watch. In 1969 Lily was an in-the-closet lesbian. It's interesting to watch when she stands up how she pushes down on her mini skirt. The thought of those men next to her looking at her shapely legs appears to be very unnerving. She probably wishes she would have picked a different dress to wear.
@DoctrWatson No, she's more bisexual than lesbian. She has said that she's been in at least one sexual relationship with men, and has had a few male crushes too. She's even said that she doesn't like to label herself (lesbian or otherwise), which further proves her flexablity and open-mindedness on the subject. So, she's just a woman who happens to be in a relationship w/ another woman. But, that doesn't mean she has a problem with men. She really doesn't----the interviews indicate that.
If I'm not mistaken, Lily Tomlin received her first mass exposure to audiences on the Merv Griffin Show. So, we are watching her at the start of her ever-brilliant career. So wonderful! The finest actress I have ever had the good fortune to see perform live. Thanks a million!
This is a performance from around 1969. She wore that shag hairstyle on the short lived "The Music Scene" tv show just before she started on Laugh-In in December 1969. If you can find a video of the documentary "Lily Tomlin" there is a clip of Lily from I believe her first Griffin appearance in 1967. She has a curled mid 60's hairdo and pantsuit and does her world's oldest beauty expert routine.
Many thanks for this! It just shows me that Lily had it all together right from the start - such a brilliant woman (as is her partner Jane Wagner; i wonder if they had met yet by this time?)
I think the third guy sitting there is actor George Hamilton.

@crooner62 As far as I understand it, Lily and her partner met sometime in 1970 or 1971. So, this would have been before they met.
