i went and watched paul present a theatre show called silent heroes, neil brand played the keys and was fucking amazing(he improvises as he watches!!!) a big tick in the box that night for enjoyment.
I wonder what Paul and Ian think of Mr. Bean. In fact, did Paul ever appear in that? I know Angus Deayton was in one of them.
Also, Paul did write a few sketches, for acts such as Smith & Jones, which were clearly modern takes on Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd and Laurel & Hardy-type routines.
I find people don't like Harold because it takes a little longer to develop the characters while Chaplin just starts being funny early on films. I love Harold more than Chaplin because I believe it's a better actor and Harold's type of comedy is more hilarious to me than Chaplin's
To be honest, I'm uncertain about Chaplin myself. He can make me smile, but I don't think he's ever made me laugh out loud (not that that's a pre-requisite of good comedy). Also I can only take him in small amounts.
I think Chaplin has definitely dated more than other comedy actors of the period, especially his silent films. No idea why, but there's something about them that just doesn't work nowadays. I don't mind silent films, I enjoy Buster Keaton silents for example, but Chaplin just leaves me cold for some reason.
Chaplin's talkies are a bit better though, the Great Dictator is still very watchable.
To be honest, we're talking about comedy that was around before... my grandparents were born. That's gonna age. I think Keaton's stuff has aged better than Chaplin's (altho Keaton is generally considered number two to Chaplin). But some Chaplin's stuff has left me speechless with its brilliance.
I agree that Chaplin was a genius as far as editing and directing etc is concerned, but as far as storytelling and comic performance is concerned Harold Lloyd was the true genius of silent comedy in my opinion.

Paul and Ian make such a good team, they seem so relaxed talking to each other as though they weren't infront of an audience :)
