  • Paul Merton= MAJOR SILENT MOVIE FINATIC!!!

  • Nosferatu is the only good silent film

  • I love how he chose some of the things that Paul loves.

  • I love Chaplin

  • i went and watched paul present a theatre show called silent heroes, neil brand played the keys and was fucking amazing(he improvises as he watches!!!) a big tick in the box that night for enjoyment.

  • I wonder what Paul and Ian think of Mr. Bean. In fact, did Paul ever appear in that? I know Angus Deayton was in one of them.

Also, Paul did write a few sketches, for acts such as Smith & Jones, which were clearly modern takes on Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd and Laurel & Hardy-type routines.

  • hahaha i agree about Chaplin!! :D

  • Paul and Ian make such a good team, they seem so relaxed talking to each other as though they weren't infront of an audience :)

  • that is the most animated I have ever seen hislop, I like it!

  • Isn't Paul Merton a massive silent film buff?

  • yeah he did a programme on bbc(something or other) about chaplin and keaton.

  • and wrote a cracking book!

  • I think that is why Hislop chose it, all the stuff he wanted to put in was stuff Merton really liked..:P

  • He just took a list of Merton's favourite things !! They are so great together...

  • @tselspa Yeah that was the whole points :0I

  • I know, I was making that exact point to someone else. Calm doon love :)

  • @holydave The whole show is a massive joke, hes not being sirous

  • @allbymysmelf i hope you are not serious about your spelling :O)

  • @holydave That's the point. Ian chose everything Paul loves.

  • HAHAHAHAHA!

    Win.

  • I'm only 14 but i still love all the old actors like chaplin, Keaton and harold they basically set of comedy :)

  • dont forget laurel and hardy =)

    x

  • yep forget them 2! lol ,,(im on my other account lol)

  • lol.

  • I find people don't like Harold because it takes a little longer to develop the characters while Chaplin just starts being funny early on films. I love Harold more than Chaplin because I believe it's a better actor and Harold's type of comedy is more hilarious to me than Chaplin's

  • Apart from piers morgan perhaps

    what a dick!!

    (piers morgan that is)

  • lol yeah, sayin charlie was a dick wouldn't go down to great. sayin piers is though, no one likes him

  • Talk, damn you!

  • I have to admit I don't like Chaplin much but like Keaton.

  • what about harold lloyd?

  • hes right he just wasnt funny

  • Just because someone excels at verbal humour, does not mean they can't appreciate Physical Comedy...

  • I love Harold Lloyd but Chaplain is just too creepy to be funny.

  • slapstick will always be funny, i hope

  • To be honest, I'm uncertain about Chaplin myself. He can make me smile, but I don't think he's ever made me laugh out loud (not that that's a pre-requisite of good comedy). Also I can only take him in small amounts.

  • I think Chaplin has definitely dated more than other comedy actors of the period, especially his silent films. No idea why, but there's something about them that just doesn't work nowadays. I don't mind silent films, I enjoy Buster Keaton silents for example, but Chaplin just leaves me cold for some reason.

Chaplin's talkies are a bit better though, the Great Dictator is still very watchable.

  • To be honest, we're talking about comedy that was around before... my grandparents were born. That's gonna age. I think Keaton's stuff has aged better than Chaplin's (altho Keaton is generally considered number two to Chaplin). But some Chaplin's stuff has left me speechless with its brilliance.

  • he's a genius not just of comedy but of film techniques.

  • I think Keaton was the greater genius, tho :D

  • I agree that Chaplin was a genius as far as editing and directing etc is concerned, but as far as storytelling and comic performance is concerned Harold Lloyd was the true genius of silent comedy in my opinion.
