The end result is to generate velocity. Velocity is generated by momentum. Momentum is generated by impulse. Impulse is the amount of force applied multiplied by the time span over which the force is applied. I = Ft, where I = impulse, F = force, and t = time. F= MA (Mass)(Acceleration.) Impulse = (Mass)(Acceration)(Time.) To generate greater Impulse, one increases the force they generate, and the time over which they generate it. Baseball wise, powerful push-off and long stride.
@yankees1234577 This is only applied during lateral movement, before the pitcher begins to rotate. During rotation, torque is applied. Torque is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis. In this case, rotate the ball about the core. Torque = (Radius)(Force)(Sinθ). Since you're moving directly towards home plate, the Sine is 1. Since it is a multiplication problem, we can ignore that 1. T=rF=rMA. The acceleration came from the transfer of energy from lateral movement
@yankees1234577 during foot strike. This is why it is important to fully extent the arm, and also to have long arms to begin with.
In conclusion, pitching velocity comes from a powerful back leg, a long stride, proper transfer of energy, and a long radius from the center of rotation to the ball.
dick,I dont think you see too many pro's use the slide step, you certainly would have a hard time naming any hall of famers that used it>I tell my high schooler to disrupt the runner by making him wait and the batter wait.the slide step with an army fastball can disrupt the hitters timing BUT I will also use a regular set delivery as well.slide step is ok in lower level ONCE in AWHILE just to disrupt timing BUT if it were such a GREAT weapon you would be able to name those hall of famers
@wogdoggy i pitched in the big leagues and they use a slide step a few times a game..but when you use a slide step in the league you still lift your knee just a touch because good baserunners will notice it...plus that little lift of the knee gives you keeps you from rushing your delivery while still being quick to the plate...
@marshalloo22 so if you lift your knee to "discourage the look of a slidestep" then is it a slide step? the best thing to do is make them WAIT..and mix a medoicre move with your best moveto first base ..koufax slide step? gibson? marachial? carlton?
@marshalloo22 listen and re read what you wrote..if they pick there knee up to far would that be STILL called a slide step to you? if you barely pick up your knee you want a fast delivery thats a slide step..if you pick up ur knee too much how doesthat STILL become a slide step? again name a hall of famer that used a slide step? its really not neccessary in the bigs when you throw 90 plus..i dont want to nit pick but can you name one? vary your timing that kills baserunners dead
Bending your back knee a bit doesnt hurt. i have been doing it and it just makes me drive me off of my back leg. Doing this has caused my fastball to be 3-5 mph faster and more accurate. BUT u cannot overdue the bend in the knee. it is a slight bend
most of the time pro pitchers are throwing fastballs that are up in the high 90's so a slid step is not needed. But with high school baseball many pitcher cant throw that fast so a slid steep is needed
i would agree 100% once u learn how to load on the back side and stay back eliminating the slide step u can keep velocity and time to the plate.. also taking the strain off the shoulder because your arm has time to catch up to your body..
This statement is a pitching myth: "The only problem with the slide step is most guys tend to rush their body leaving their arm behind." This is only true is a pitcher has very poor mechanics already. A slide step does not cause poor mechanics. I see this rarely if ever. When the body moves fast the arm moves fast. How can it be left behind as long as the pitcher shifts his weight properly and drives his lower body at the plate? Dick Mills
I always thought a pitch generated more power when they drop on their back leg and drive forward. Otherwise the pitcher is just falling and can generate nearly as much force. I agree with leftyMD on the slide step. I always used it, but my coaches told me I was losing power. I asked my teammates during intrasquads and they said there was no difference. The only problem with the slide step is most guys tend to rush their body leaving their arm behind. Any comments about the back leg thing?
Good stuff. Can you guys check out my videos and let me know what you think of my throwing mechanics. I'm a SS naturally, but I have been pitching more in recent years.
DO NOT READ! A little over 20years ago a 12 year old boy was playing with his basketball in the street on Acto Street, NJ. Some teenagers who were drag racing on motorcycles weren't paying attention and ran him over and killed him. it is said that if you go on Acto Street, turn off your car, and blink your headlights 3 times you will see the figure of him bouncing the ball. Now that you have read this you must post this on 4 other messages in the next 10min, or you will die in an auto accident
one flaw here... when pitching, the balance point is critical and then you must break the back leg and at that point the weight transfer comes in. Watch the pros.... you can see some guys nearly touch the mound with their back knee.
Can you explain in detail why the balance point is important when it is not used when doing a slide-step. Lifting the leg has no real value in pitching except to slow the pitcher from developing more forward momentum. Who touches the mound with their back knee? In most cases that would indicate early rotation and a lack of developing momentum.
@leftyDM it is used during a slidestep..you do have to have your weight on the back leg but its ok to lift your leg a few inches before you start toward the plate..A very quick load keeps you from rushing and gives you a split sec to get your hand out early
@leftyDM Lifting the leg does NOT slow the pitcher from developing more forward momentum. Maybe the way you teach your guys it does. Because your teaching them to stay back & find a balance point. Look at Nolan Ryan. His ass was moving from the second he lifts his leg. He got his leg back down & released the ball quicker than some guys did a slidestep. A slidestep takes just as long, because their body has to transmit more energy. It just appears to runners & hitters that they're rushing.
Hey Coach you spoke about losing power by the athletes head not being over his center of gravity but if you watch his mechanics frame by frame youll see that by putting all the weight on the back leg and posting up on that "balance leg" he loses that dynamic balance because his head goes backwards while his body was going forward during his delivery which causes loads of energy to be wasted and not be put behind the ball
nope

maybe hes throwing toward second cuz the sun would be directly behind the pitcher if he threw toward home plate, just a guess
