  • sorry mate but its either the poor sound quality or your not fully understanding the true meaning of this piece. Dont just play the notes, put some thought into where your at in the song and determine how it should be played

  • This is way too loud. You should watch your tempo more. You can play notes and all, but the beauty of this piece was missing. Music isn't about reading notes on a page, there is so much more too it.

  • That was amazing! :) I'm 14 and just starting this piece. How long did it take you to learn it? It takes me forever to learn a new song.

  • Not bad. I think you need to keep a more consistent tempo throughout the piece...

I take it does change tempo, but I think it's missing that solid pulse.

    Cheers!

  • I'm sure you are well above comments like miyachiman55s' but just in case your playing is fantastic, keep up the good work!

  • You remind me so much of one of my pianist friends! :)

  • Great job!

  • As a fellow student of about the same age, I applaud for you ^.^

  • at 4.56 minutes, it s probably too fast and yet in a curious way your interpretation works for me. in a word, it is exciting. no one is going to characterize your performance as lugubrious or ponderous. bravo.

  • Very nice rendition. I am just starting to learn this; I think that I will exaggerate the ritardando a bit more in several places.

  • :OOOOOOOOOOOO im learning this piece. u're so much better than me

  • By the way, if you get a chance, listen to the Van Cliburn recording of this. He plays it like no one else, in a very unheroic way.

  • Good job. I am just starting to work on this, and I think the only part I have a difficult time with is the "galloping" part (with the octaves in the left hand). I always miss. This video was nice because I could watch your hands during this part.

  • this is bloody good

  • absolutely intense...

  • haha im 15 and learning this and i can barely play it semi good and its only a fraction of the speed he plays at :p haha thats a bit humbling

  • Well done good effort !!

  • are you jewish?

  • @dhfeld: No need to be so defensive. I happen to think @miyachiman55 comment was very constructive. Don't worry about playing a piece quickly because you think it shows virtuosity. When you play a piece too fast you make mistakes that you normally wouldn't make if you were playing it at the correct tempo. You also wouldn't need to slow down on parts that you can't play at that speed. I agree that you need to focus on the beauty and also the almost sinister nature of the piece. Hope this helps!

  • i think the right hand triplets were a little too loud. there were also many ritardando's where there are none marked on the music but that is your interpretation. the ppp section should have been much quieter in my opinion. i am also a 13 year old playing this piece and i enjoyed your performance but my interpretation was much different, mine has more rubato where yours was a steady tempo (with a few sped up spots) i did enjoy it a lot though

  • Martha Argerich owns.

  • And why even get offended?? You know well enough that you are a fantastic player for your age. If you don't feel the criticism is justified, just ignore it!!! There will always be dicks on youtube. Getting all outraged and hiding their posts will not change that fact - rather it encourage them.

  • There were several wrong notes (especially in the last part), but I very liked the expression and the tempo. It's easier to play this piece slower, but I prefer the more fast and aggressive approach - exactly the way you played it :)

    Thanks

  • Beautiful mate.

  • i play the guitar,but i like piano too !

  • right hand triplets too loud, few wrong notes heard. tempo changed to abruptly. melody not heard at times. dynamics not well done, especially when it is ppp. you do not understand the art of music yet you attempt on brahams?! you should go back and reread your music and interpret this rhapsody better.

  • @leunge0 ahh mate piss off its a bit too fast and dynamically challenged at times but all in all its a fairly decent attempt. what he's not allowed to attempt to play brahms because its not up to your standards? if youre going to post criticism, do it through a video of you playing it better.

  • Good job!

  • This is awesome. Notes are very clean and the tempo is just right. Well done : )

  • Comment removed

  • You did a very good job. A few mistakes here and there, but overall it's nice. You interpret some sections quite different than I, but it's still very nice. How long have you been playing?

  • I like this version!!! =) A little too forte and fast for make the perfection for me but I like the rubato and when you play piano at 2:30!

  • AMAZING

  • This is an absolutely beautiful expression of this piece. I have heard my mother play this for years,in much the same way. My mother, by the way, trained under Sascha Gorodnitski at Julliard School of Music. Keep doing your thing and do not the people who can barely play get you down!

  • these comments that you see before mister dhfeld, are only mere suggestions, you do not need to be protective about your work, no one is saying yur terrible, we are just helping you to become better at the piano than you are now.

  • @karazh : Another wonderfully constructive comment from someone who has never posted any of their playing for the youtube crowd to attack.

  • Your playing in this piece, Anthony, is of a high standard technically, but this piece needs MUCH MORE romanticism, rubato, breadth and flexibility of phrasing. Slow down in the middle of phrases. Slow down at the end of phrases. These aspects will come. You've got all the power. I've put a number of my own recordings on Youtube and I plan on putting some further ones up there. I welcome comments. I don't snipe from behind a pseudonym.

  • i love how simple this piece is to the ear, and yet how complicated it really is. and the beauty of it. i write music and i want it to be as wicked-crazy-awesome as Brahms

  • this is very fast but, not my style.

I think performance is not all that good

  • ive heard 13 year olds a LOT worse.

  • around 1:40 he makes a mistake that sounds way too awesome to be in this piece. What note was that?

  • Comment removed

  • i agree if the piece is slowed down the character of the piece can come out more

  • I am going to play this for my audition!! YAY! :D

Rate this thumbs up if you like piano!!

  • Comment removed

  • it's too fast

  • I agree, and I've heard quite a few pianists perform this piece. Those who think it's fine do not know how to critique a piece correctly.

  • Give the kid a break. I have been playing piano for longer than he has been alive, and i sure know how to critique a piece correcttly. Instead of criticizing the poor 13 year old, why not be happy that another young person is pursuing beautiful music? There are not enough of them these days.

  • Reverse rubato... you slowed down on technical passages and sped up on the parts that needed rubato. Very unappreciative interpretation.

  • lol beethoven

  • I really like this performance! I think gratuitous rhubato ruins Brahms.... I definitely prefer to Brahms to be played a bit more straight forward and with good motion, like this. Really, thats how I prefer to hear most rhythmically complex music.

  • i am learining this peice too hopefully will be posting some vids of my repertoire

  • The tempo is OK, guys. Other versions are a bit more sleepy. Antony, and you should make more tempo and volume variations. Maybe it is the fault of so-so audio quality, because in Argerich's recording (it has splendid dynamics, maybe you can borrow some technique from her, you can, you're good at piano =)) we hear clearer accents. Maybe you should purchase a microphone and record such a good version in HQ-audio. Good luck. Regards, Andrew. 5/5

  • wowzers! he played reallllllly well its fabulistic!

some ppl r saying its too fast...so what? they are all just jealous that they cant play that well

    good job!

  • The beginning theme *is* a bit too fast, which may have contributed to why I find this performance rather boring. This a romantic piece - more rubato and dynamics are needed!

And yes, I do play this piece.

  • Just remember fast isn't always better.

  • i got this score last week...and now i try to learn from you...=)

  • nice, good work chap.

  • he plays brahms too fast.

  • I really don't agree

  • WOW! Your playing is amazing. I really enjoyed this. You are very talented!! Thank you.

  • Nice. I like the nice strong melody line of the quarter notes heard strongly above the triplets. I think you are a little fast, so try to go slower so you can make more of and impact with the melody. On measure 8 (right before the a tempo) the Fermata is over the rest between the notes, so take a pause.

Also, you use the left hand very nicely, giving some extra power, but don't overload it.

    Overall, very good!

    (I'm learning this piece.)

  • You gave really nice insight on the piece, but I kinda laughed since you we're still learning the piece! But, then again, you don't need to play the piece to give helpful advice for it.

  • he's 13 ... good job

  • You should work more on cleaning up ur mistakes rather than playing like you are a prodigy. Focus more on the beauty and then you will then be a true advanced musician.

  • Do you really think this is a helpful and constructive comment?

  • it is a bit fast - and some markings are ignored, like the luftpause at 1:24 and 1:41. and the descending notes at 0:38 and 3:55 sound incorrect i think, but maybe that's right...doesn't sound like that in the other recordings and when i play it. all in all, good though.

  • So what? There can be a huge difference when you are comparing different publishers, so playing it exactly how the score says it is just idiotism. I think he is doing pretty good job and about the tempo, it might be heard played a little bit slower, but it's not that big deal.

  • @dhfeld yes i do

  • @dhfeld I think it is a very helpful comment. Learning how to learn the notes in a musical way is very important in playing music. You don't want to get so caught up in what the paper says that you are like a computer and you aren't putting any of your own feelings into the music but at the same time you don't want to get so caught up in "making music" that you aren't even playing what the composer wrote!

  • @dhfeld I was told exactly the same thing whilst I was preparing for my DipABRSM Music Performance. Worked a dream.

  • @dhfeld Definitely, I agree with miyachiman55!

  • @dhfeld I don't think it was outright mean...

  • My father have played me this when I was child. It was my one of the most favourites songs :)

  • AMAZINGGGG

  • This was amazing! I love the expression put into it. I'm taking this piece to high school contest this year. I'm curious...what kind of piano is it that you're playing on?

  • It's a Grotrian 192. Unfortunately, the camcorder microphone which this video uses doesn't give the best sound. We're now working with a Zoom H4 which does a bit better.

  • Hi!! I am learning this song too! Its fun. U have any tips on it to help me? Plz Rply

  • impressive! altho a few minor slips, still overall it souded great!

  • Overall, pretty good, but I have a couple points you might consider:

    1. Posture; it is one thing to "get into" the piece, but don't break your back in the meantime.

    2. Way too fast! Slow it down a little, then even out the tempi within the piece.

    3. Use more lift in the hands, it will make it much easier to play those big leaps. Don't be afraid to lift!

    Overall, however, great job!

  • honestly the posture doesn't matter at all. if a certain posture works for them, they should just go with it.

and nice job btw, im currently learning this piece- not to easy as i'm sure you know

  • Great work. But I feel it is a little faster than it is supposed to be. I could be wrong though. Just an opinion. Anyway great effort.

  • i play this piece too and you must to try to find the ,,emotions" at this piece..to make more expressive..but it's good :)

  • Rahuligan3...give him a break he was freakin 13 when he recorded this. get a life.

  • Very Good Performance!...just be careful not to rush the louder parts in the beginning. I can tell that the parts that you rush are the ones you know the best, which is easy to do!.....thanks for the post...excellent

  • On the contrary, I think that the rubato puts a lot of expression into his playing. If it were all the same tempo, it wouldn't be as interesting to listen to (or play!).

  • I just played this piece for a comp. It is a very difficult piece to perfect i'm telling you that. Props to you bro for sticking with it and having the guts to post it on youtube! Sometime maybe I will. Nice job bro!

  • rahuligan is a dick

  • Youtube: Mecca for the sweeping generalization based on almost nothing.

  • wow...thats the saddest thing ive ever seen. this kid puts the effort into learning this piece well and posting it online for other people to view, and then dickheads like rahuligan come along to criticize him. who cares if youve won awards, any piano player with any sense of class or dignity would never go out of their way like that to criticize another player, especially a child. basically, loooooserrrrrrrr.

  • i play this piece!

rahuligan3, you might try to be a little more constructive with your criticism. that sounded an eensy bit pretentious.

  • Good for you!

  • Without knowing who you are, I can't say whether your interpretation is any better than his, but it's a difficult piece to play and I admire anyone with the ability to get through it in the first place. Arrogance is a trait unbecoming in anyone; especially in a musician. Learn a little humility.

  • Rahuligan3, all i have to say is that you are a complete JERK. Nice way to inspire a young musician who has great talent. You're probably some adult that's just jealous of REAL talent because he played this when he was 13. Overall, you're a pathetic human being, picking on kids. As for dhfeld, i think that that was a WONDERFUL performance. I'm 12 and i'm learning it, and i understand the difficulty of this piece, and i applaud you for this. =) Have a happy new year! ^-^

  • Who even is Rahuligan3? I cant find any comments from him.

  • wow. :)

  • best performace of this piece of alll youtubee!!

  • i just cant stop listening to this !! bravoo ! bravoo!

  • amazinngg!!! perfectt!!!!

  • needs lots of work. very slow, and you poke out the end of the phrases. where it switches to the chromatic section, you completely changed tempo.

  • agree completely.strong hands but

    needs work

  • niceeee!! talentedd!!

  • You are good, I compare like you playing suddenly Ram Si rhapsody op2.

I in Chinese Xi'an Conservatory College and university department, major in the piano.

Knows you very happily, we may become friends?

  • It is Very good! Good character and style! Dynamic contrast is good and a good tempo!

But no offense, are there a few mistakes in some of the basses? It sounds different when I played them..

I'm 15 and I've to perform this in my teacher's very first concert! Quite nervous! That's why I searched for videos! My tempo is slower that yours :P Great performance!

  • I'm 15, too and I also play it at lower tempo xD

  • are u a girl or a boy? just curious... ???

  • i am 15 years old and i started to learn this piece a week ago. I can't play it that fast yet, well i am still learning.

I think you play it quite good. When did you start playing the piano?

  • I started learning to play piano when I was 8.

  • Great job on this piece. Not an easy work. Bravo !

  • Very nice work!!

How old are you? I think your play is very balanced which normally can not easily find in a play from a young player.

Just one thing, sometimes your shoulder hinder your dynamic playing.

    But very nice job!!congratulations!

  • no good, don't rush, it makes u sound unstable, and powerless

  • i think the speed is ok, but i like slower too. but you play good. Is this your house? y two piano? who play tht with you?

  • He's a kid you cunt

  • yes, i know, u fag, LOL

  • Nice job! I agree with some other posters that there could be more dynamic contrast, but I really like your tempo.

  • i agree with you, but you can say that about every performance.

work on dynamic things than it's perfect.

i played this piece for my final exam at school but i don't think my way of play is nearly as good as his.

  • You're really good! I'm 16 and I started this piece a month ago and am still working on it! I'll be very happy with myself if my ending product is half as good as yours. Keep up your brilliant work!

  • He played that so lovely.

  • quite outstanding. i do have a reservation though, in that, there is a little too much peddle (like for instance towdards the end of the first section on the first page) because of this, sometimes the brilliance in brahms' beautiful chord progression is somewhat obscured. otherwise a good interpretation. a technically challenging piece due to a lot of octave movement - you've come clean im most areas.

  • Thank you. YouTube does generate its fair share of silly and/or self-centered commentary, often by people who have no recordings of their own 'out there.'

  • I couldn't agree more. Im workin on this song right now. I am about 4 minutes into it; I'm right after the key change right now. I will indeed post it once I am finished.

  • @dhfeld oh shut up. If you are putting you stuff 'out there' you should be prepared for criticism - yes, even unfair criticism. If you want people to tell that you are great and wonderful just play for your grandparents or something, but if you play advanced music and post it, be prepared to be criticized as a an advanced musician. The only self-centered -ness I have encountered on this thread yours, with your whining remarks about how appalled you are that people don't like your performance.

  • your 3 against 4 was pretty bad ass

  • im 13 how old is this guy?

  • I was 13 when I made this recording.

  • It's amazing. I like the fact that you performed a faster version of it. The slower version that is usually played is quite boring and long.

    You're an amazing pianist.

  • I know that was great but I gotta tell you that your tempo slowed down too much through out the music. Even though it is a Rhapsody, you need at least some idea of consistency of the tempo. You can't just slowed down like 100 after you started your song at like 130 or so.

  • Bravo!!!

I'm 14 and still learning to play tis piece.

  • Great job, I'm amazed. However, according to my music, you left out a measure at 63. The F# comes in 2 beats later. Also, I think the parts where it says p should be played much softer and quieter.

Great Job anyway, keep up the good work!!!

  • thrillingly amazing

  • this is amazing =)

  • Very impressive indeed

  • it is really good i just think you need a little more emotion and passion itl sound much better!

  • great job, anthony! i didn't play this piece until i was seventeen, and it was not nearly as good. keep it up! you won't be sorry!

  • wow that was amazing. keep up the good work.

  • same im 15 too just started playin yesterday i rekon in a few days itl be alrit =)

  • I'm studying now this nice piece .. my comments to this performance is that is not bad but very amateur... nothing interpretative impressed me.. is extremely mechanical..just playing some notes... anyway ... is allright and fast...

  • Omg I just started this piece and I'm 15.. You play so well! I'm jealous. XD

  • Powerful elegance right here; the final version must have been something else!

  • Where do I find your later posting of this song?

  • Unfortunately, the only place to find it is in ethereal memory. We never recorded it. My son is now on to new projects with a new teacher. I suspect, and hope, that this piece will stay in his basic memory and that he'll come back to it one day with an older and more mature eye and ear.

  • Well, it's an awesome song, and usually when I get back to a piece after a year or so, it is SO much better! God bless, Anthony!

  • Well done! However, you played b natural instead of b flat at m. 38 which according to my score is a mistake.

  • Good ear! We caught and corrected that one shortly after posting this. This version was an early playing and we got some good feedback from friends. The final version was played a bit slower and with a bit more polish.

  • wow...cool

  • This would work a lot better if the piano were in tune. Mid range is off.

  • i played this when i was 16, and even at that it wasn't as good as play now. serious props to you!

  • I am playing this piece and I have picked your video for tips on dynamics and phrasing, as I like the way you do it. I'm not a master critic nor am I a master pianist, but I love piano and I think you've done great. Thanks for posting it!

  • Kudos also to your teacher. I about had an accident when I saw you were only 13. Musicality is easily college or professional level; the technique will come.

  • Not so much hard as it is difficult to have the lead melody shift between hands and keep the rhythmic drumming and know how to diminish it to not overwhealm the other hand. Beautifully done and Brahms would be proud.

Probably would sound better in a studio.

  • Very nicely done!! Beautiful tone :). A bigger dynamic range would have been even better. And I would play the middle part faster, just so it grows more. But overall this was a very nice performance! I love this piece -- it's so fun to play!

  • You are simply amazing! This is great!

  • very good! enjoyed your take on this.

  • WOW. i'm gonna play this piece for my all-state competition in texas.. and i play it really slow right now and i'm still learning how to play this piece :/ i didnt know it was THIS fast o_o lol but then again i still have a long way to go :D i only have one thing to say. WOW! :D

  • Remember, it doesn't have to be this fast. Listen to other versions out there. There is a range of interpretation.

  • Everyone's a critic - geesh.

I'd like to see those who criticize post their performance of this piece.

    Idiots

  • Yeah, I didn't have the guts to say that but it's true. In any case, people who WOULD be willing to put themselves out there are probably not the kind who would take nasty pot shots at others anyway.

  • you are very, very good for your age. if you keep practicing as you have and remain open to suggestions and improvement, the maturity and emotional side will take care of itself

  • Thank you. Some of the commentators over the past few weeks could take some lessons from you in how to write a mature comment.

  • To play this you have to understand Brahms...to a certain extent u can play the seperate parts of the piece ok...but when put together they seem like a random bunching of notes...this piece has to flow

  • play it again in 10 years

  • the sense of time in this piece is almost non existent with his performance and to be honest i believe it to be beyond his ability.

  • I love it .....so beautiful...you're brilliant and cute too!!

  • Well done. I'm learning this piece right now and you have shown me a good use of expressionism in it.

  • Ah, a touch of ego in this 21 year old master critic. :-) Many concert pianists play it at the same pace. Yes, it is better a little slower.

  • if u say this is good, u dont have any knowledge of the piano.

many mistakes, legato, pedal, expression, much too fast!! .. and so on

  • Much too fast!

  • Bravo!

  • Esta es la ultima cancion que toque antes de irme del conservatorio de musica de mi pueblo. Me encanta.

  • Gracias por sus comentarios buenos.

  • HE KNOWS SPANISH TOO!!!!

    btw, the video is pwnsome.

  • have you been playing the piano for a long time?

  • I have been playing piano for almost six years now.

  • Every teenager plays this piece, but when they get older through life they get more and more out of this. You can work more on the legato, for instance, 0:33 the A-B flat A, stretch the B flat, a little softer too, gives a much more mystical, cloudy effect.

  • Excellent Technique and control. Watch the pedal use in the beginning. Amazing playing for five months!
