To all interested parties, Big Time is available on NetFlix streaming video right this very minute. NetFlix removes stuff from streaming all the time so I don't know how long they will keep it on. It is a must watch for Waits fans.
You run from home, from life. You chase a dream and jump on a train to god knows where. Aimless, lost, you piss away what good fortune finds you and end up washed out, brought low by the same blind stupidity that dragged you from your doorstep in the first place. You look back at your life, your home, the people you loved, and realize at last what you gave up when you rode those long irons into ruin and you wonder if you can ever go back.
@CynicalCatharsis so basically what you are trying to tell me is that this guy is a complete homo? "wrought with pain and regret" why would you talk like that? are you trying to tell me that you are equally as homo as this homosexual individual making this horrible attempt at trying to sing? I am not judging this nerd on anything other than his less than satisfactory screech of a voice.
I think I grasp what you are saying pretty well, no need to clarify, I understand completely.
@CynicalCatharsis glad you think its cute to hate on someone whos voice sounds like a wild animal with a severe respiratory issues taking its last breath.
sounds like an early Randy Newman song. a much better song called "Louisiana 1927 "(about the flood) Damn I wish every song by tom didn't miss for me . I only love one song "in the neighborhood" and like "downtown train" .
@c05541235 I know I'm a little late to this conversation, lol, but I read that Tom taught himself how to play the piano. If it's true (which I'm guessing it is) it would be really natural for him to have bad form. I started piano lessons when I was 5, and the first thing they teach you is how to hold your hands. If no one taught you how to hold your hands, it would be easy to learn to play with the wrong form, and once you've learned... well, it's hard to re-learn stuff. Amazing, beautiful song.
@c05541235 I did some research. U.S. Government Manual #37193857 on Piano Playing Posture states that a proper piano player plays with fingers in a relaxed curve. It appears that Waits never read the publication.
Just kiddin' c05541235. Seems a little unusual, but it works for him. He has a few unconventional qualities.
@danwillingham fair question and if the goal is to try to top TW....well it's not gonna happen...but they do it, or i do it, because they love the man and his music.... because it allows them to access/express some real emotion... and because it gives them pleasure... even if they can't touch his versions or his talent... he is after all, Tom Waits.
@danwillingham actually theres a cover of Jockey Full of Bourbon on this bar jukebox on a mix CD that is better than Tom's version. I cant find it on youtube, however, so I don't know who covered it.
@danwillingham Isaac's voice is just as unique as Tom's. The Fray are always very respectful in their covers, and give full credit/praise to the original artists. What's so terrible about them covering it?
I saw Big Time on IFC a few weeks ago and I was entranced. Prior to seeing it I only had Mule Variations, but Big Time showed me what an awesome live performer he is. I wish they would release it on DVD!
TI've never decided what I love most in this clip....his delicately falling asleep as the ticket agent or his placidly gazing up into the light from above on stage.....
His whole career is one gigantic homage to a vanished breed of once-great American creativity and showmanship (musical and cinematic),
Very possibly my all time favorite song. Remember it from train rides through Europe being 18 years old. And from my time in the army. And from my time inside. Now, I'm living 8700 km from home. Thank you, Tom.
Uh fuck jack? and his queer stuff? I'm assuming you mean jack kerouac. I wont' say how I feel until I confirm your comment. I usually don't post but your comment got me thinking.
@aaronshoup Congratulations, From a left wing(not to left) liberal, who also enjoys tom waits, america, weed, booz, girlfriends(current), and more weed and homework. Because i wouldnt do it, but you did and i respect that.
"What made my dreams so hollow? I was standin' there at the depot, with a steeple full of swallows, that could never ring the bell" Tom is the greatest..
It baffles me that people think he has a bad voice.

Few do angst with the kind of profundity Waits is able to summon up. It's as raw as it is sad. It's also starkly beautiful.
