we catholic believe in ONE God as we say in our creed. we condemn the worship of idols as we say in our cathechism. bowing is not always worship. when someone bows in front of the bible are they worshipping the bible or when actors or singers bow at the end of their concert and bow to the crowd are they worshipping the crowd? the bowing to statues is to show respect to the saint represented. not to worship.

@dis00612 The saint in heaven pray the same way we pray on Earth. But the Bible commands us to not have contact with them. Why ask them to pray to God for you when you can talk to God directly?
The Bible also command us to not make or worship any images made by hand. The Ark was not worshiped it self, it was a replica of God's thrown in Heaven so that the priests (at that time) could make blood offerings to God for forgiveness of sins. Now we have Jesus for that so we don't need the Ark .

@bluesith in japan people show repsect by bowing. you csn kneel before a king and still not be worshipping him. a catholic can kneel in front of a statue while praying isnt worshipping the statue or praying to it. Why do you need to pray to a statue, the Bible forbids making craven images and praying before them, that right there is disobeying God's commands.

@bluesith if you believe Jesus is God (which im sure you do) you should know that certain verses sais he is God but not a complete chapter. and there is more scripture verses that speak of the making of statues.in 1 kings 6:23-28, we see solomon made two cherubims and put them in the holy place and overlaid the cherubs with gold.

@ecthaliion I'm a missionary in a non-Christian country. I have limited time to see my family, when I go for the holidays it is my mothers wish that the whole family goes. I go but I don't interact with statues. I bleed the blood of Jesus on myself for protection. What I see in that church is no different then what I see worship in my new country. The focus has to always be on Jesus.

I had to choose between serving God or serving Religious traditions (that have a lot pagan influence mixed in.) @JacquesZupp im not done. the bible also says that the saints pray.(revelations 5:8) so to put it short , Mary and the saints can pray for us if we ask them to. also, idol worship. the church does not practice idol worship. God commanded moses to build to build on top of the ark of the covenant 2 golden cherubims. do you know what they are? they are angels. (exodus 25:17-21) so we can make statues.

@dis00612 The saint in heaven pray the same way we pray on Earth. But the Bible commands us to not have contact with them. Why ask them to pray to God for you when you can talk to God directly?
The Bible also command us to not make or worship any images made by hand. The Ark was not worshiped it self, it was a replica of God's thrown in Heaven so that the priests (at that time) could make blood offerings to God for forgiveness of sins. Now we have Jesus for that so we don't need the Ark .

@bluesith in japan people show repsect by bowing. you csn kneel before a king and still not be worshipping him. a catholic can kneel in front of a statue while praying isnt worshipping the statue or praying to it. God forbid, but if your mother was dead and you found a picture of her somewhere, would you kiss it?

@dis00612 bowing in Asian countries has different levels of respect. A nod of the head is casual, but there is a deep bow, say for an Emperor, that is equal to worship.
Why do you need to pray to a statue, the Bible forbids making craven images and praying before them, that right there is disobeying God's commands.
Why do you continue to try and defend something that is clearly forbidden by God.
I would not kiss a photo, the dead are dead, I honor them by remembering them in my heart and mind

@bluesith im catholic and do not worship statues and my friends and family and other catholics i know do not worshp them and i showed you were God gave us permission to make them just not worship them which we do not do. God is not the God of the dead but of the living.

Were in the Bible does God say "I give you permission to make a statue and pray in-front of it."? So if He's the God of the living why do you pray before statues of dead people?

@dis00612 You have to remember to read the whole of the Bible in complete context. You can't just find one verse that fits your belief system. If that's the case then read Mark 16:18 and go join a snake handling church.

@bluesith if you believe Jesus is God (which im sure you do) you should know that certain verses sais he is God but not a complete chapter. and there is more scripture verses that speak of the making of statues.in 1 kings 6:23-28, we see solomon made two cherubims and put them in the holy place and overlaid the cherubs with gold.

@dis00612 You are reading those verse out of context. That was for the Holy of Holy, that was to recreate God's temple/Thrown room in Heaven here on Earth for the Ark of the Covenant. What do you mean not a complete chapter? The entire Bible speaks of Jesus' divinity (yes even the Old Testament). Learn to read it all in context.

@ecthaliion I'm a missionary in a non-Christian country. I have limited time to see my family, when I go for the holidays it is my mothers wish that the whole family goes. I go but I don't interact with statues. I bleed the blood of Jesus on myself for protection. What I see in that church is no different then what I see worship in my new country. The focus has to always be on Jesus.
You wanna go to Mass, go. But be straight about the scriptures, don't mix pagan worship in your own worship

@dis00612 @dis00612 here are some (of many) verses: 1 Timothy 2:5, Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (deals with talking to the dead) Mark 9:4 (Peter wanted to do something special for Old Testament Saints, God forbid him), In 1 Samuel 28 Saul goes to a physic to talk to Samuel (who's dead) Samuel said God was angry because Saul consulted a dead saint and not God directly.
Because of Jesus we have direct access to God, why go through a middle man?

the Catholic church breaks many commands. How can you call yourself a Christian and commit Idolatry? A Christian should have a natural desire to read God's word to learn His ways. Not to do silly religious sermons on Sunday to feel good, then live like the devil the rest of the week.

well live like devils? u see thats my problem with some of the protestant denominations, so easy to point a finger and judge, its not idolatry, they're not false idols, a false idol would be something like an ancient egyptian god, not a statue of a mortal man/woman who dedicated his life or a portion of his life to serving God, and wouldnt u consider it kinda hypocritical of beating ur chest every tuesday friday and sunday crying "mea culpa" and then go and judge others for having diff beliefs?

@ecthaliion Wow! Learn to read your Bible! The Bible says an Idol is putting anything in the place of Worship that is due to God. That means if you worship a picture of a person that is Idolatry. It does not matter how good the person was. God get's all the glory and praise.
And stop with the protestant thing, because I have almost as much against them as I do with Catholics. But you Catholics take the cake. No matter what the Bible says you justify your Idolatry.

its hard to explain saint veneration when ur not willing to listen, its pretty much black or white, and theres no room fro gray, but a lot lays within that gray area, personaly i believe in a higher power, and i dont exatly think that higher power is as strict as some of his followers are, otherwise dont think u think something wouldve been done by now? i.e. sodom and gomorrha...great flood kind of deal?

The Bible is clear, No idol worship! if you put anything between worship to God, it is idolatry. If you make statues or images of dead people or angels or animals it is idol worship. There is no Veneration of the Saints mentioned in the Bible.

@ecthaliion The reason why it may seem that some Christians are so strick is because the Bible tells us if we see a bother who fell from the way, to guide them back, correct them back to proper doctrine.
The reason why we don't have floods, is because we are under the New Covenant (Read Hebrews) God shows His Grace, but we must walk by His commandments.
Don't be fooled by the Catholic lies. They tell you it's OK to venerate saints, but the Bible does not say that, they lie to you.

whose truth ,the ppl's who showed u the "way"? whose lies, the ppl's that oppose the beliefs of the ones u follow? it all comes down to wrong vs right, the sole reason why a lot of this past things happened (crusades etc etc) and quite frankly i dont see much of a reason to argue whose right and whose wrong, it all comes down to it bieng a personal thing, u solely confy in the bible, while i believe (in God) but i still have my doubts about the bible and it being the definite word of God

@ecthaliion perhaps it was out of line, I'm sorry. But I did to illustrate a point I've actually witnessed in Mexico and Guatemala. and that was how easily Catholics turn simple things into idol worship. But I know protestants do it too. Many of them worship their pastors. also not biblical.
most of my family are still Catholic, so I still attend mass with them at times, but I don't take part in the Idolatry. So don't insult my knowledge of Catholicism. (My cousin is a nun) I've studied it.

@ecthaliion Maybe we can't change culture as a whole (at least not over night) but as individuals we can rid ourselves of Pagan influence, otherwise why would God tell us to do it if it was impossible. I know our debate got very heated. But I just want to encourage you, not to change your church (Luther tried and he could not) but to hold yourself to God's word and use that as your guide. As I've demonstrated here, we can't always do it, but God asks us to try. give God his proper worship

@JacquesZupp 1st off lets discuss mary's intercession. we as catholics do not really pray to Mary, we ask for her intercession. its the samething if you were to ask me to pray for you.(which i will) the bible says(1 timothy 2:1-4) to pray for oneanother which Mary does and dont say mary is dead because Jesus said that his father is the God of the living and we know that Maryy is in Heaven so she is alive. and she knows that we are praying to her because the bible says so.(hebrews 12:1)

@dis00612 I used to be Catholic, but then one day I started to read my Bible for myself. and what I read (in full context, not just stray verses shown to me by the priests) i discovered that the teachings of the Catholic church do not line up with the Bible. I had to choose between serving God or serving Religious traditions (that have a lot pagan influence mixed in.) I know it's hard for you to understand, but I'm praying for you have true revelation of Jesus and His Word.

@dis00612 Yes that verse is talking about the traditions that Jesus taught and followed. over 500 years before the formation of the Catholic church. These traditions would look more Jewish then Catholic. These are the New Testament church traditions.

The Catholic church and the Protestant movements were all stated by men. But Luther had divine inspiration when he was reading his Bible and tried to fix the Catholic church, it didn't work out and he left.
But that is still not what Jesus started in the New Testament (My space is short so I'll continue this..)

Myself I'm non-denominational (Jesus did not stater any denomination) I'll use the underground church in China as an example; They have no denomination, the gather together in homes and use only the Bible as their authority. They have deep fellowship with God through prayer to Jesus and the study of the Bible. I've seen this in many countries, including North America. It can be in a house or a church building

@dis00612 Jesus did not star the Catholic church. The Catholic church was started in the mid 500 when the Roman Emperor declared that the head of Rome is the Bishop of Rome,and the the Bishop of Rome was the final say in all spiritual matters. The bishop of Rome thus became the first Pope.
All that happened 500 years after Christ. so Jesus did not start it. the Roman Emperor did. Jesus started "Christianity" not a specific denomination.

@dis00612 Study wow, that's the one and only verse you Catholics know (I used to be a Catholic). That verse Jesus is talking about Peter's Faith. Upon that Faith (which is given by the Holy Spirit, read the verses before) will Jesus build His church. Not upon Peter the man, Read the rest of the Bible, Paul became a more active leader even while Peter was alive. The early Christian church was persecuted by Rome. Rome did not convert until 350 years later. Learn world History and Read your Bible.

@dis00612 Again study world History. Rome persecuted the true church up until Constantin's conversion (mid 300s). Constantin also separated Rome into two halves (The Western, Rome and Eastern Byzantine). In 538 there was a problem concerning spiritual Authority in Rome (city). the Emperor declared the Bishop of Rome the final authority and the Bishop of Rome's title was changed to "Pope". At this time the Pope took the seat of Caesar in the Western Capitol of Rome, thus creating the Vatican.

@dis00612 the word "Catholic" means "Universal". This word was never used to identify the true church that was started by Jesus in the New Testament. The word "Catholic" ("Universal") came into use once the Roman Emperor Constantin was converted and made Christianity the official State Religion (mid 300s).
Besides Peter was the Apostle to the Jewish people (read the Bible). Paul was the apostle to the gentiles (non-Jews) and that included Rome.

Then came the Spanish Inquisition. Then the murder of Native Americans for not converting. And did you know that the Hitler's Nazi party had full blessing of the Catholic church (the current Pope was actually a Nazi during the war.) these are all facts

As for the Nazi, the Pope in the 1930s blessed Hitler and the Nazi party. Sure when the world got wind of what was going on in Germany the Pope had to save face.
The current Pope (Benedict) was a Nazi member during WW2. You find this information easily.Just Google the words "Pope Benedict Nazi" or look it up on Youtube.

i think a lot of this discussion is from lack of information like it takes catholic to understand wat catholics do..a lot of the catholic mass is very ritualistic..but theres a lot of history behind it, as a way to make easier to convert "pagans",so its not like they decided to make stuff up out of nowhere,now of course the church has done some atrocious things,but it wasnt just catholics, since there were no real protestants back then it involves them too

you can do religious ceremonies to make yourself feel good, weather you are aware of it or not, that worship goes to Satan because it is breaking God's commands.
